Hey Everyone,

So, I’m new to GW2 and as much as I’m loving the game so far I’ve also found myself with a bit of a problem: I have no clue what I want to play. I’ve been jumping around from class to class trying to get a feel for them but I feel like its kinda impossible to get a proper feel for the class by just playing for a few levels.

Currently my highest level character is a 33 Elementalist and I also have a 27 Warrior and a 13 Hunt….er, Ranger. I like my Ele but I feel like I have no clue how to play her properly (I’m pretty sure I’m not supposed to be in Fire all the time). My War is soooo easy (or maybe I’m just missing something). I go in, I smash, I do the happy dance. And as for my Ranger, I like her and her pets but, I dunno, I’m not 100% happy with any of her weapon skills.

I’ve dabbled a bit with each of the other classes and I can find something fun with each of them and that just makes things worse. kitten these people for doing such a good job with their classes!! /shakefist

So here I am, asking you guys for help. What do you recommend? I don’t want anything too difficult (at least not yet), and since there isn’t any outright healing classes I guess I want something with good damage that can survive on her own (or if my hubby decides to pull several groups O_o). Also something that isn’t too slow as I prefer faster combat.

Thanks for any help/suggestions you guys can give! =)

Play a thief. If he pulls several groups you can stealth and let him clean up his own mess.

Play a Warmentanger, that class does pretty much everything you want.

Heya, Perfectruin. I main an ele and would be glad to give you some tips in-person. I’m online right now for two more hours, but if you have another time you’d like to meet up, or prefer I explain myself here, let me know.

For now, though, let me leave you with this link (read the latter half): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Old-folks-trying-to-game/first#post3437123

@Khisanth: Haha, I just might.

@Cerbskies: Get outta my post, Dear. <3

@Falunel: Thank you for your offer but I probably won’t be on till later or tomorrow. If you could explain here that would be awesome but I feel bad making you type so much. Also thanks for the link, the vids really showed me that I’m doing some stuff wrong. My rotation is something like: Fire, Fire, Fire…..ohsh*tsImdying Ice…..Fire.

I suggest watching youtube videos on the classes you are interested. Heck, watch vids on all the classes for all aspects of the mgame, that way you can compare and discover things that you might have overlooked.
Playing pvp is also a fun and easy way to find out what playstyle you like. You can get a bunch of free gear for testing, and you dont even have to go into a match if youre not into that. There are test golems in the Heart of the Mists that you can wail on and they wont hit back. :)

Which weapon set are you using on the elementalist?
Sticking to fire isn’t necessarily wrong all the time. Depends on the situation. :P

I’ve watched vids for all the classes but they all seem like theyd be cool and same thing with the golems. Currently the three characters I listed are my favorites and I’m leaning towards either my Ele or Warrior.

It’s not wrong to stay in fire as that is your highest DPS on staff. Don’t forget you can combo your fields and get special effects that way. (Using a fire field IE: Lava Font, and then a blast finisher IE: Arcane wave to stack might). That’s just one example I’ll let you play with the fields/finishers as not to spoil the fun: P

Elementalist is a very trait dependant class, so the traits you run make a huge impact on your game play; it’s a late bloomer for that reason as well. Also its one of the harder classes to play effectively in GW2 so doesn’t get discouraged if you fail now and then.

Last tip I will leave to you is not to be afraid to experiment with other weapon sets as well :P

My Ele’s been my main for a year now, and I agree with CountzuCrytus. The pre-80 levels are really wonderful for trait experimentation without much repercussion. Try new weapons, try new traits (you have to buy books at lvl 40 and 60, iirc, which give you access to the higher tier traits and reset your points), learn the kind of play style you like. Read and re-read the mouseover tooltips for the skills. Learn about combo fields and how to utilize them in single PvE and more group-oriented PvE.

That said, even when I hit 80 I’m still experimenting. Sometimes a build I thought was going to rock falls flat and I have to play around with a new one. Really get your dodge rolling down and be familiar with how much endurance you have at default (eles have pretty low default endurance without traiting it up or utilizing the number 3 fire scepter skill strategically). One of the things that’s transferable from class to class is the benefit of good movement habits (barring zerg events/the odd skills that require stillness to cast). Eles can be glassy, and some of the skills (mist form, four and five air dagger skills, lightning flash) can really help you get creative in your movement style and in getting out of tough situations.

You have the option to work pretty much anywhere (d/d keeps you up closer, s/d is mid ranger to all over the frickin place, staff you wanna keep a bit more range), so it truly is about experimenting with play styles. For my build, it is KEY to continuously change attunements. I have buffs depending on which attunement I’m in, so it can be critical to get to the right attunement at the right time. I really encourage you to get used to swapping in and out mid-battle.

I know this is basically what everyone else has said, but I wanted to wish you good luck! Ele is my favorite.

In terms of fun, ele and engi takes the cake because of the vast amount of skills you have available.
You will get respect for being a good ele from the “elite” portion of players.
Pve dps ele fiery greatsword is the highest. Warrior has overall better dps tho.
Warrior is a lot easier then ele.
Warrior is an awesome melee-burst and zerg tanking machine.
Ele is the unrivaled boss of aoe damage.

When I reach an impasse, I will play each class equally in all parts of a game and eventually a decision will come.

Thanks everyone for the help, and thanks to the nice people who went out of their way to contact me in game. Ive narrowed it down to 3 classes: Ele, War, or Necro. Liking Ele because I feel like I can do everything and the Necro because I really like the thought of a tanky clothie, but the War is soo simple so I may just play that for my first go through of the game.

Oh well, at least its down to 3. XD

Play all three classes you have chosen until at least level 30 before deciding which you want to main. Level 30 shouldn’t take too long on each, and by then you’ll have a good range of skills, your first tier in traits and you’ll have been able to unlock at least one elits skill for each class.

Generally, experimentation is the best. Mix it up – there aren’t any penalties worth worrying about at this level if you get it wrong, so try different things. If you’re struggling with your Ele, then definitely try a different weapon set. Staves are good in the right situation, but I find them less useful for general PvE exploration type situations. Check out some build vids online to see what kind of thing you want to work towards (and unlock all skills in all attunements as some weapons are worth having around just for one or two skills, like skill 4 in air on the focus).

If you are sitting in fire attunement mostly because you haven’t got used to the F1-F4 buttons and juggling those around yet, maybe spend a little more time with the Necro. There, you only have the F1 button to worry about, and Death Shroud is a whole lot of fun (not to mention is a second health bar of sorts). Necro, like Ele, won’t kill with the speed or ease of a Warrior, but since you seem to find the Warrior too easy anyway, I suspect you won’t mind a little more work.

Necros are difficult to trait for, simply because various traits are all over the place and it can be unclear which trait line to stack points into at first. But again, try experimenting. I set out to build a proper tank of a Minion Mancer Necro, and ended up being a Power Well Necro, so you can surprise yourself. Minions, to me, though having Flesh Golem is definitely a help, can get too much to manage, and aggro AI mobs when I don’t want them to, etc. My focus, with wells, is to do AoE condition damage to huge swathes of enemies all at once. It’s great fun to watch everything melt before me.

It may seem like a hassle to level up and gear two toons but it isnt when you get the hang of it. Always ask questions and check forums for info on builds/dungeons/farming what not.

Of the 3 you listed, Warrior is the easiest to play, yet the least exciting imo. You’re def not missing something, it’s a faceroll with Warriors in PvE.

Ele is technically one of the hardest classes to play well, but if you’re enjoying it then stick with it. It is best utilized by swapping in & out of attunements as situations call for it. For instance, starting in fire to drop & blast fire fields, swapping to earth to blast em again, swapping to air for swiftness/blind to avoid damage, then to water to heal up/cleanse, then back to fire for more burns and damage.

Ranger is good, but suffers from the perma-pet, which is the subject of much debate as to the viability of the class at endgame. It’s certainly a boon in open world, no doubt. But it becomes difficult to manage (read: keep alive) in harder content, which directly impacts the dps of the class. If you enjoy Ranger and enjoy managing your pet like an extension of your character, keep it up. If you want a pet you can set to aggressive and ignore, you may want to rethink it.

You should also try scepter/focus. It has some very nice features!

4 blast finishers – 2 in fire(Dragon’s Tooth, Phoenix), 1 in water(Comet), 1 in earth(Magnetic Wave)
longest duration fire field – Flamewall last 8s which means you get a bit more time to practice with your finishers
2 hard CC – daze from Comet, knockdown from Gale
2 soft CC – chilled from Freezing Gust, crippled from Magnetic Wave
2 blinds – Blinding Flash, Dust Devil
2 anti projectile – Swirling Winds, Magnetic Wave
1 invulnerability – Obsidian Flesh this will let you survive almost anything for 5 seconds.

There is also some extra healing from water trident and condition removal from phoenix. Phoenix also gives vigor for more dodging.

The blast finishers with flamewall means you can be stacking a decent amount of might for more damage. Shatterstone applies vulnerability so that will also increase damage as well.

For the ‘do everything aspect’ you could play around with glyphs and the arcana trait line. Both of those have properties that reinforce each element’s theme.

Alrighty guys, its been decided! Warrior first and Ele second (or whenever I just feel like blasting things with the elements =P). My husband switched to a Warrior with me and we’re getting a kick outta smashing things together. It is a simple class but its also fun and since I never really got to play a melee classes (old comp was horrible and laggy and made melee a pain) its nice to finally be able to have a warhammer.

I actually can’t decide between S/F or D/D, I really like both of them. S/F may be winning a little though just because I like the range it gives me.

If you’re playing with another, one ele and one warrior can be fun. Eles create a lot of combo fields and warriors can blast em constantly. Between the 2 of you, you’ll have a lot of group healing & might stacking.

I personally went S/D with my ele, due to the slight range advantage and the spiking damage style. In open world, spiking enemies seemed sufficient and more rewarding than the sustain D/D has.

A suggestion to have fun as a warrior: bow… and big groups of enemies.
It’s not the faster way to kill enemies, but i always got a lot of fun slaughtering 10 enemies at the same time with my bow of fire and some kiting/dodging. You just drop the maxed fire field, then immobilize the champion/veteran/elite with skill 5, kill the other guys with the 1-2-3-4 skills and enjoy how they burn… burn… BURN!!! /evil

Go to PvP and fight the NPCs there, you can play as level 80, try different weapons, utilities, traits and gear stats without sinking money on experiments.
Also you can check on armor sets, mix&match so you can have an idea for your final look too, don’t forget cultural is on a different tab.
