I’m new to Guildwars 2. Can someone please tell me the first few things I should do when I start. I don’t want to waste my time and roam around doing pointless stuff. Thanks

Roll a warrior, level it to 80, get exotic zerker gear and do dungeons over and over and over and overand over and over again.

Is GW2 a game or a virtual casino?

That is sounds advice…. Or you could level a class you like the sound of and play how you want to. You can’t really go wrong at the beginning, you gain exp from exploring as well as fighting&questing&hearts&events. Just remember that if you feel like you are falling behind for your personal quest you can go off to the other races starter areas and do stuff there to level yourself up.

Classes: Guardian, Elementalist, Warrior, Thief, Engineer, Herald

Don’t approach it like other MMOs. Roll a class you like, explore, enjoy, and don’t stare at your exp bar.

Actually, you should do exactly that…roam around and do stuff, whatever you happen to stumble upon. The beauty of this game is in the journey, there is absolutely no rush to level cap. There is nothing waiting there that you can not do on the journey to get there. Take your time, you will be glad you did.

Welcome to Tyria, we wish you many hours of gaming pleasure. =)

Roaming around doing random stuff is exactly what you should do to get a good feel for the game.
On the other-hand if you think it is pointless- just rush any class to 80, be warned that the game doesn’t magically change once you hit cap- hence no point in rushing.

Seriously in answer to your question:
Get gathering tools as soon as you can along with salvage kits.
Gather everything and either keep it to craft or sell on the trading post for cash.

Salvage all whites and vendor all blues and greens or sell on the tp depending on which is more profitable.

Do your personal story as close to lvl as you can since you get good xp and free gear to help you along.

Get white versions of all the weapons usable by your class and unlock all the skills before you decide which to settle on, as different weapons sets changes playstyle dramatically.

Hope this helps somewhat.

For your first character, you should just roll a class you like, take your time to roam around and do stuffs like admiring the surroundings, exploring the zones, listening to npc talk, challenge yourself to the jumping puzzles etc.

Enjoy the process of leveling through exploration of the world, as there is no point in rushing to level 80.

not that 80 really matters much, but everything gives you exp.

Everyone is saying pick a class you like.. and they’re right, don’t choose any particular class because some people say it’s the best.. but how would you know what class you like without ever having played? Create a new character of any class that sounds interesting, go to the PvP area and mess around with builds on the test golems. It’s a great way to get a feel for your class before leveling them all the way to 80.

Also, like others have suggested, after figuring out what class you like, go get all the gathering tools, stop at all the nodes and gather stuff.

Check the TP before vendoring items.

Level up the weapon combinations you found to be most interesting while playing the class you like in PvP.. or unlock them all, I suppose that’s sound advice.

Try a jumping puzzle! They’re fun.

Join a guild, can’t stress this enough. Get a good community of players around you to help you along the way. Even if it’s just for advice or a friendly hello when you login, it’s nice to have others around to help out.

Slow down and smell the pixels.

Create a character depending on which class you find to sound the most comfortable for you. Start the game in do what you’re told and then dive into the world after your first story is done. Walk around explore the world as much as you can with your current level attack some foes figure out how to do stuff. Basically do what you think is best and you’re for once good. (Not every game has this awesome introduction)

None of it is pointless. It all gives you xp, and world exploration gives you many more options later. Do a heart, the heart vendor opens up to you, sometimes with items no one else in the world sells. Find a waypoint, you can travel to it later. Find all the waypoints, you are much better off helping with guild bounty missions when you have 15 minutes to get to the random zone, scout it for the target, find the target, and kill the target. Make that 15 minutes total to do that with 2 or even 3 targets!

Gathering gets you mats to play with in crafting or just to sell for sweet sweet monies. Fighting the mobs gets you experience in how to fight and dodge, how to read the world for clues as to something big coming. Being 80 is nice, yeah. You have better gear and more skills and right now you don’t downscale so much in lower zones to truly be at the level of those just starting. But it’s not the -point-. Playing and exploring is the point!

So … do it all. How else will you learn which parts you like most?

Note: this is my opinion only.

What is your primary interest? If you are interested in running only one character I suggest you pick either a Mesmer or a Guardian. Both of these classes are good in all aspects of the game. (Open world PvE, Dungeons, WvW, and PvP)

Once you start a character, start killing stuff with the weapons they give you (opening up new weapon skills), do hearts, and do your story quest. Get map complete on your first zone. Do dynamic events.

At level 5 buy new weapons from the trading post. (Normally you can do it sooner, but low level weapons are ridiculously expensive.)

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

Leveling is fairly linear in this game. Takes about the same amount of time to level from 1 to 10 as it does from 71 to 80. And if you can’t level every hour or two you are doing something wrong, like standing in one spot for an hour or two.

You don’t need to do your personal story. It’ll still be there when your Level 80. And talking about levels they dynamically scale based where you are. You can level to 80 in the 1-15 zone, it’ll just be really boring.

You get XP from EVERYTHING. Go into a region of the map that you haven’t been before, XP. Gather from a material node, XP. Pass close to an unvisited POI (point of interest) or unlocked waypoint, you guessed it, XP. Craft even if it’s converting logs to planks (well until you become proficient at it), XP. Rez a fallen NPC or player (everyone can), XP! Find and do a jumping puzzel, XP!!!! Notice I haven’t even talked about bonking things on their head and going through their pockets.

XP and the result of getting XP, leveling, is so unremarkable that you simply stop paying attention to it and just appreciate wandering through the world helping out when you can.

And speaking of that, there isn’t tagging, KS or loot rolls. You do like 10% damage on something and when it dies (assuming it doesn’t heal back up because no one bothered to finish it off) you get full XP and a loot drop. Oh and if you hunt in out of the way places that nobody has been to lately, you get bonus XP based on how long that critter has been around since the last server reset.

There’s no trinity, few dungeons, no reason outside of dungeons to formally team as dynamic events scale based on the number of players involved.

If you play the game as a wandering adventurer looking to see the world it’s rather fun. If you need to be continually guided as for what to do next, you probably aren’t going to enjoy this game as much.

Oh, and no need to stick to your race’s area and City. Roll a human and go to the Sylvari areas and then pop over to where the Charr roam. It’s all good. You may find factions there that will attack you regardless of race but there isn’t any these races are this faction and these races are another. The real enemy is out there (pointing to the wilderness).

Well enjoy. Have fun storming the castle (that’s WvW btw).

We are heroes. This is what we do!

RIP City of Heroes

It is a good thing to take things at a pace you can enjoy everything happening around you and learning about things is highly recommended! However, you do not have to go slowly to wait for your friend. One of the most wonderful things about this game is that you can play with anyone as long as you are in a zone that fits the lowest level character. The higher level one gets downlevelled to suit the zone. You will still get loot, XP and rewards even if you play in a starter zone at lvl 80.
