Hello,

So, maybe it’s a stupid question but it’s been bugging me for weeks. Almost all of my characters are in the “HoT” now. So, to go to another level I need to have enough mastery points either “green” or “red” ones to fill in a requirement.

So what happens to my “normal” XP points (that would normally go into the experience bar at the bottom of the screen) when my bar is already filled in but I can’t advance higher because I don’t have enough mastery points? I tried to observe if they get added later but I have no idea. I assume Anet wouldn’t make it so stupid that we’d be just wasting our time playing – getting loot but no points…

Can someone tell me?!

They just go away until you either start leveling another mastery or you complete that region’s masteries and start getting spirit shards

Note that you can switch the mastery you’re leveling and not lose progress, which can help prevent exp from going to waste

Ah, that sucks. I’m not happy with this kind of system Anet invented. And the further you go, the more pain in the kitten becomes getting the mastery points… Not user friendly solution. It’s like we’re forced not use elite specialization until we get another mastery :/ I like to choose what I want to play but playing where I want and seeing all these XP going to waste is painful! AAARGH!

EDIT: Welp, in a situation when I have all the avilable masteries full I’m forced to farm the mastery points in order to unloc the new bar :/ I don’t like having that at all. First huge disappointment with GW2…

also, if I’m not getting any XP, why do I keep on seeing XP popping out all the time even if the bar can’t progress? They should be disabled then so i know I’m not getting anything.

Thanks for the reply!

PLS SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I’M UNDERSTANDING THIS WRONG

Mastery Points and Mastery unlocks have nothing to do with Elite Specializations. They are two different systems.

To unlock Elite Specializations, you must acquire Hero Points, not Mastery Points.

Although, some players lament the loss of XP, it really does nothing for character progression after L80, except for Mastery Progression. Masteries can afford some rewards and conveniences, I’m not sure they offer any power-type advantages.

You can read more about Elite Specializations and the Mastery system in the Wiki, accessed via the link above.

Good luck.

Well the new living story maps got more mastery points then what the new lines need and from my experience if you can fill up a mastery track the exp will go into it even you u dont have it active.

Dont help if all of them are filled up and waiting for points to get to next stage tho.

I’m currently in the same situation, at least in Core Tyria. I’ve maxed the Legendary crafting line and don’t have enough mastery points to unlock the final tier of the others so all my XP is currently going to waste. Soon I will be in the same situation in HoT maps too.

But I don’t think it really matters because there is no limit to how much XP you can obtain and most of it comes from things which are repeatable like events. So you’re not really losing XP. You can’t use the points you’re getting now but you will always be able to get just as many later on. (It’s like worrying that if you don’t kill every single enemy you come across you’re losing the gold and items you’d get from them, technically it’s true but you can get just as much later on from other places, or coming back to kill the same enemy.)

All it means is it will take me longer to complete the masteries than if I went and got the points now. But I’ve chosen not to do that because I’d rather focus on other things first. Most of the time masteries don’t make a difference to your gameplay, you won’t be any more powerful if you have them, you’ll just have more options in certain areas.
