Q:

This topic is written in sincere curiosity. It’s not a rant. And yes, i did search this forum with lots of different search-terms without any success in finding a topic that asks this question, which surprised me as i can’t believe it hasn’t been asked a hundred times before.

I’ve spent maybe 15 hours or so in WvW, playing Engineer and Mesmer on Far Shiverpeaks. I’m great with both of these classes, kick kitten in PvP, and have truly tried over and over with getting different angles of what the point of the mess that is WvW in this game may actually be, so please refrain from pointing out my skill level or the difficulty of playing these two classes (IF anyone actually does consider them difficult.)

I also have hundreds of hours of commanding forces in other games including in competition on elite levels. I know what a good a commander needs to do, although even i frankly can’t see how any commander can change the outcome in WvW in this game.

In other words; this isn’t just complaints from some random newb. I’ve played games and managed teams on very high levels.

And now to the point. In every single one of the cases, except ONE, the game-play i’ve had in WvW consisted of this:

1. Running around either alone, in a small group or in the zerg army.
2. Bumping into a force larger than mine.
3. Seeing a quick and total death to all players in my team’s force.
4. Respawn and repeat.

That’s at least ten hours of following an experienced commander, starting a well-planned and coordinated attack with lots of machinery, and being kitten from the side by a defending force that comes running. The Far Shiverpeaks forces i’ve played with have NEVER actually managed to take over OR defend a tower. NEVER.

The mind-set that inevitably creeps up on you after having such an experience in a game mode is probably pretty common: “In WvW, neither skill nor gear plays any role whatsoever as its always the team with the most players that will win every single confrontation.”

Now, here’s the thing: even if this may be considered fair from a general perspective, how does this make it FUN to play WvW though? Games are entertainment products, and some of us are obviously not entertained. Among my guild of 200 members, less than 10 have ever even tried WvW for more than ten minutes.

Whether or not my experience with WvW has been unbelievably unlucky or not, i don’t know. But after having tried several dozen times and only been able to take over one camp(!) and no towers or keeps in over 15 hours of trying absolutely everything to do so, i think it’s safe and fair to say that WvW lacks a certain panache.

Could someone experienced (and troll-free) player please answer me these two questions from YOUR point of view, and not that of the general public:

1. Where’s the fun in WvW for you?

2. How would you debunk the following statement: WvW consists of nothing but completely mindless clashes of forces that may as well be controlled by bots as the one and only outcome that can and ever will happen is that the larger force will win.

And to you commanders out there:

1. How does your nerves stand this nonsense? Do you realize that there are commanding roles in other games that are far more enjoyable? Do you still prefer commanding in WvW in GW2 over the others?

2. Have you ever commanded a force much smaller than that of an enemy’s and still won?

3. Do you feel that you’re truly making a difference?

4. When the scenario explained above happens, what do you do to turn it around to the advantage of your team?

Hello,

As there is already a similar thread here : WvW… how is this fun?, this one is now closed to avoid duplicates.

Thank you.
