I just hit level 80 and I feel overwhelmed with what I should be doing. I’m not really sure where to start for example which dungeons should I do and which dungeons CAN I do? I’m pretty sure my gear isn’t good enough to do them. But if it isn’t where can i get good enough required gear? Are there dailys I can do at the level 80 maps to increase my gold or get crafting items? Basically can you tell me everything I need to know about being level 80 in guild wars 2!!
Thanks!

For starters, how much money do you have? Getting decent gear is important if you want to do the more challenging content like dungeons. Since you’re new I assume you won’t be dodging tells and DPSing like a pro so I’d recommend you at least get a rare armor with some defensive stats mixed in like Knight armor. Then use your remaining cash on an exotic Berserker or Assassin weapon of your favorite type. The difference between Berserker and Assassin is pretty minimal (Assassin tends to be very
slightly better unless you’re a guardian) so just get whatever. If you can’t even afford that, consider doing world events or champ trains (go to Frostgorge Sound or Queensdale and ask in chat about it, the champ trains there run pretty much 24/7) until you have some cash.

After that, try putting together a group for an easier dungeon path. Caduceus’s Manor Story Route is probably the easiest dungeon in the game for people who don’t know what they’re doing, so it’s a good place to start. Alternately, you can join a dungeon run with more experienced players, but make sure you tell them you’ve never done it before or things may get ugly.

Once you’ve started doing a few dungeons, you’ll be getting tokens for completion which you can spend on exotic armor and weapons. You’ll also get a fair chunk of gold which you can use to get geared up. You’ll want to make sure you get Berserker or Assassin armor and trinkets once you are getting stuff at the Exotic level, they’re the best PvE sets so anything else will eventually get replaced and thus be wasted.

After that, your long-term goal will probably be getting Ascended gear. You can look up how to craft it but basically you need:

1) Bloodstone Dust, gotten by killing champion-level mobs and opening the bags they drop. Most people have thousands of these.
2) Empyreal Shards, gotten by opening chests in the open world or at the end of jumping puzzles, and by completing dungeons. Also very easy to get.
3) Dragonite Ore, gotten by completing specific world events. Very annoying to get, do a Google search for “guild wars dragon timer” to see when and where the events in question actually happen on your server.
4) Lots of gold. You need to buy a bunch of other stuff to craft the ascended gear itself, and it tends to add up.

So there you go. Get some basic gear, work your way through the more challenging content, get better gear. End goal, get a full set of ascended gear.

Frankly rares are good enough for all normal dungeons… to ‘need’ exotic you’d have to be running a fractal at a fairly high level. Of course it would be better to have better gear, but you won’t quite die without it.

Don’t worry too much about gear for now. You’ll eventually find out what you want, and with the money you get from dungeons it wouldn’t take long to get at least an Exotic tier of the stats you want.

Focus on learning what to do in each dungeon. Every path has its own distinct tasks, of which there are up to 3 ways to do it – to exploit a broken mechanic (say shooting through floors or stunlocking with a particular consumable – bear in mind these will probably be fixed eventually), to do it through some form of coordination (stacking and/or rotating projectile reflects usually involved somehow), or to do it by understanding the boss attacks and adapting accordingly. You can decide for yourself what kind of approach you’d like to take to get a 100% success rate on the paths you’d like to run after that, then spec everything accordingly.

Do let people know beforehand if you’re new to a dungeon, unless you’re an expert player who can adapt to others’ tactics on the fly (not applicable to almost all people). Many gamers don’t mind teaching, but almost all get annoyed when a run is sabotaged by someone doing counterproductive things or not doing required things.

WvW is completely different though, the difference between an ascended tier equip and an exotic tier can mean the difference between being on the floor or putting others on the floor. I don’t quite recommend solo roaming without full exotic prepped at least. If new to it, sticking in a zerg works; in a blob of 40 over people it wouldn’t matter as much even if your equips are underlevelled.

Fractals are probably something you should stay away from until you’re able to at least do a few normal dungeons comfortably.

Map completion of the higher levelled zones gives some pretty good drops at times, depending on your luck.

World boss runs are doable, just follow the timers on GW2stuff. They’re much easier than dungeons unless you try to solo a world boss. If you must, start soloing from the Dredge Commissar, which is the weakest of the lot.

What class are you playing? Do you enjoy crafting? PvE? WvW?

I suggest that before attempting a dungeon you look up dungeon runs on Youtube, or find a good guild that can help you through the first few times if that’s your thing.

If you need gold you can try the Frostgorge Sound champ train or just run around the map and kill stuff, as the loot there is pretty decent (as opposed to Orr, where loot is quite horrid).

You can try for map completion as well. If you’re looking at possibly making a legendary, it’s never too soon to start this. WvW is a good place to go for karma and experience and commeraderie (sp?).

You can work toward exotic gear in WvW (can buy using Badges of Honor) or dungeons (using dungeon tokens).

Hope this helps.

Playing at level 80 is not a fundamentally different game than the game before that. The level 80 content gives only slightly better rewards than comparable content in a level 70 zone. You are still encouraged to do world exploration (especially if you enjoy that). In fact, if you want to do dungeons, it helps if you have the waypoints at the dungeon entrances unlocked, so you can travel there more easily.

In short, there is no reason to stop doing the things you were already doing before hitting 80. Everything still works, the rewards do not change, and you keep “levelling” past 80, which still gives skillpoints.
