Which Toon to Main In WvW Zergs
ranger is expected to use his water field heal, muddy terrain and immobilize elite
engi, not much to ask for really, if u wanna be useful thumper turret gives u 2 blasts on demand + another one if u use shield; u can also support with some stability from elixir B tool belt. for dps, grenades are probably the most fun u`ll have on engi in wvw, just don`t go full condi dmg, power is always stronger
so are u saying ranger is more useful in wvw than engi?
nope, just that for ranger the useful wvw zerg skills are obvious since he`s so simple. that doesn`t make him good.
engi is MUCH harder to play at full potential, that`s why u can`t ask for certain builds, he`s too complex
Hi there.
I’m passionate about this, because when I started playing, engineer quickly became my favorite class. I was told engis can’t be commanders and aren’t much use in WvW. I’m happy to report they were wrong! Much more useful than rangers.
In fact, I think engis should be a needed class for any zerg. The problem with engis is the same for eles – you have to know when and how to swap. But with engis, you swap your skills. I will swap skills anytime I switch focus.
Running solo/on defense: medkit, rocket boots, elixir S, elixir that turns conditions into boons, supply crate elite. It’ll take a zerg to put a stop to you. Okay, or two glass cannon thieves, but the elixir S toolbet skill lets you stealth and that stops them dead in their tracks.
Running in a zerg or sieging : landmine, elixir gun, grenade kit, mortar elite skill. The mortar elite skill is the best thing in WvW. You set one down for yourself or someone else to use. THe #5 skill has a massive Aoe that has knockback. You can keep enemy troops back from an entire keep wall with it alone, spamming large Aoe on the walls with condition effects. When going zerg vs. zerg you can either get a lot of kills racked up with it, or confuse an enemy attacker to coming into the zerg, thinking its an actual mortar. Don’t worry, the refresh is only about two minutes. You’ll have another one.
For engi traits, I’d basically say just make sure you have swiftness when you swap toolkits. With the medkit that basically ensures constant swiftness as long as you keep mashing the 6 skill and using the swiftness pack occassionally.
and I’m off my soapbox!
lol, mortar is absolutely the worst elite, dunno what noobs u`re been playing against in wvw but the hp on mortar is so low u`re lucky if u get to use even 1 autoattack with it
also, by “You can keep enemy troops back from an entire keep wall with it alone” u mean just 5 of them or u don`t know about aoe limit ?

Kicker,
It’s all about when and where you use it, but it’s very, very effective for me in zerg combat.
And yes, I know about aoe limits, but usually with aoe that big, people on the walls also try to dodge out of the way. It’s always fun to watch a bunch of high ranking WvW’ers dodge at once. It’s as much a feint as it is useful. That’s part of the appeal.
Well I guess I will use engi then since it can support the zerg better than ranger, thanks for all the info guys much appreciate ur help =D
