Hello everyone,

I recently re-started playing gw2.
I made a new character, currently lvl 59 engineer.
The problem is, I don’t know which armor to buy when I’m lvl 80,
I’ve heard of exotic armor, ascended armor, etc …
I know that ascended is the best, but is it a seperate armor ?
Or is it an existing armor (E.G. exotic armor) going through a specific process like in gw1 ?

I’ve been searching on forums, but can’t figure it out. :D
Just wanted to know if someone could explain me which armor is the best, second best, etc …

Ascended armor is the “best” but not a needed upgrade, also it is not available for purchase. Ascended trinkets are available for purchase for laurels or laurels/badges of honor. Ascended weapon and armors must be crafted, requires crafting level 500 and lots of gold, of looted.
That said, I would say just get exotic and if you have laurels of laurels/badges maybe get ascended trinkets since they will be account bound and usable by characters you create later.

Exotic Armor is sold by Karma vendors in Orr, when their temples are open. It’s perfectly adequate for nearly everything in the game.

Well, that was silly of me, forgot to mention where/how to get that exotic. In addition to the above, badges of honor can be used for exotic gear (more stat choices than Orr) and dungeon tokens, just do some research and make sure to do dungeon(s) that give the stats you want. Both of those sources also offer exotic weapons. PvP reward tracks offer dungeon armor, although it is a slow way to get it, but it is not a bad option for getting dungeon weapons, with the same warning, make sure you are doing a track that gives the stats you want.

Exotic armor and weapons can be crafted. Requires at least level 400 in the crafting discipline, if I remember correctly.

You are correct, but I think it is usually cheaper to just buy them (~10×40 silver for T6mats and ectos + the T6 mats for the actual armor pieces).

This is what I am doing. I am level 77 with my elementalist and once I hit level 80 I will buy vigil armor. It’s rare armor. I will wear this armor as I do dungeon runs to get tokens for my dungeon set of exotic. I did this with my ranger too. Works out nice. I have not done crafting. That is an option.

Dungeon armor is Exotic.

When he refers to Badges, he’s talking about Badges of Honor, gained by doing WvW.

It’s all on that wiki page.

You’ll definitely want to go after a good set of exotics as your first priority. Buy what you can, craft what you can’t. Orr Karma vendors are a good option once you hit 80, and if you have a mess of Karma to work with, but you’ll either have your stats in a mess or you’ll have to hop between the various temples to cobble together a cohesive set. crafting/buying from TP gives you more control over your stats and presents more options, but will be costly either way.

Ascended is a long term goal and can easily take months to complete a set, as well costing hundreds of gold. It is not quite on par with crafting a legendary, but it is a very involved undertaking. You will want to have your exotic set first as it has nearly the same effectiveness as ascended with a fraction of the investment. Then you can decide if you are happy with that, or if you want to go all the way.

I didn’t know it was this hard to assemble an ascended set.
Anyway, I guess I’m going to follow my first thought, which is buying exotic when I’m 80 & then collecting an ascended set.

Ascended weapons are a reasonable goal to pursue but are a long term goal and offer only a slight numerical advantage to Exotic weapons.

Ascended armor, on the other hand provides some smaller increases and take significantly more resources and time (mostly due to needing 6 items for a set0. This is VERY true of the light Ascended armor as it requires an increased amount of Ascended materials than the other sets (we have no idea why).

Keep in mind that if you hit 80 and are strapped for cash and have deficient equipment, You can buy Rare (yellow) items of the TP for fairly cheap (with some searching) as some temporary kit. It will give you something decent to wear while you work toward Full Exotic gear (or Ascended if you chose to go that route). You can also get LVL 80 Rare weapons from faction and racial NPC vendors for some karma (but keep in mind that any upgrades you put on those NPC purchased equipment cannot be recovered as those items are not salvageable.
