Which class to play?
Lol i only play 2 class so far, the Warrior and Ranger, so if u want a good utility char, then go with ranger. and u might of picked your class already
Hm.
Well, elementalists are good at kiting and very flexible in all the support and cc they can provide, and their weapons have awesome effects. But they are also hard to play and super squishy. You’ll die very often until you get close to the level cap and get good gear.
Necros can do conditions and support well, and some people like them for semi-tanks. They don’t kite very much from what I’ve seen, but I’ve only barely played my necro.
Engineers are a little unbalanced, but they have a lot of odd-ball utility skills and fun things to play with. Don’t know how they kite.
You could try reading up on the classes on the wiki, http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Profession. That might help you get a better idea of how the classes work.
ya elementalist looks sweet! and the d/d characters look cool and they are apparently really good!
Well the thing with this game is that every profession has their own heals and their own CCs and their own utility skills. The combat style allows for each profession to kite if they are using a ranged weapon. So it depends more on what you like to see your character doing.
Warriors I think use the most weapons and are the buffer/debuffers
Guardians do a lot of AOE, both magic and melee, and use a lot of group skills
Engineers use a bunch of different “kits” that changes the type of attack they use
Elementalists are closer to the archetypal mage (magic AOE) and also use a lot of skills that are useful in a group
Mesmers use illusions and debuffs and buffs
Rangers can tame pets and use traps
Necromancers have minions and use AOE
Thieves are your ninjas basically lol
I’ve played necromancer (which I didn’t end up liking too much) and now I’m playing guardian which I love cuz she keeps sending enemies flying XD
Server: Crystal Desert
Representing guild: Diamond Legacy
You can do something with almost every class in the game. While some classes with be better at it than others, you have a bunch of options.
Warriors: A character spec’ing through the Tactics trait line, when combined with a full x6 set of Superior Runes of the Soldiers (at lvl 70+), can be a great AoE healer with AoE cleansing. Even if you’re wearing dps gear, the healing is acceptable for a non-healer and the AoE condition removal is very strong.
Guardian: This isn’t my class of choice, but it’s pretty strong defensively and has some interesting AoE support options through its trait spec lines.
Elementalist: Tons of people use this class when they want some kind of AoE support build. People tend to focus on elemental attunements such as Water to act as pseudo-healers.
Engineer: While not that common, some people run dedicated Elixer Gun support builds. With the proper trait choices, you’ve got some nice AoE healing and condition removal. Also since this weapon is generated through the permanet use of one of their Utility skill slots, you can still use other standard weapons or Engineer skill slot weapons to mix things up. (In WvW, I’ve heard horror stories about people having to deal with an incoming attacker wave that has 1-2 Elixer Gun enemies to support their zerg. If done right, these characters can be really strong.)
I think to be honest you would like either Elementalist or the Mesmer, the elementalist has been talked about but what i will add is the amount of combo fields they can self – use are incredible and if you get the attunement switching and combo fields down, spectacular.
- think of that like the old style aspect switching, ice trapping and pet management all at once to get your burst off as a hunter. (pvp yes but best way to describe it)
Mesmer:
you can do basically everything with this beast it’s my favourite class so i am probably biased but you can do a glamour build which basically supports your team with reflection fields, DoT (condition) removals while also providing defensive buffs and the like.
you can also go shatter glamour so you will shatter and damage until your hearts content while also supporting.
Phantasm – out and out damage really.
immortal mesmer: build to grant Boons to yourself and allies revolving around reflection, distortion and healing (you will still put out a ton of dps with this build too but more over-time than anything else)
you could pick ranger if you wanted too but i think it is a let-down compared to some of the other companies rangers / hunters, the potential is there and there not a bad class at all however some things don’t work and are not effective enough to make so much of a difference, they can defiantly support and dps though.
EDIT: pop into heart of the mists and hit dummies, look at traits and builds and join in hot-join PvP to get some expereince on the class and see if you like them, its all free and instant there and is the best way to check you can also go to the PvP wardrobe there and preview all different types of gear and weapons available to check races and looks.
I start off slow sticking with a profession or class when playing mmo’s because I try them all before making a final decision.
From what I’ve experienced after trying all the professions is … they all are good.
Now I know for a fact, when soloing,Guardian is a great profession and the one I finally decided to stick with.
My advice would be to try them all out at least to level 30 then make a decision or simply fill all 5 character slots with different professions and go that route or look up each profession and read on the feedback and go that route.
I highly recommend the Guardian.

Best advice for any MMO with class/profession selection and always a good answer for the ago old question.. “what should I play”.
Coming from WOW, I played hunter and shaman. I like how the classes had “utility” in a sense that I could kite, off-heal/cleanse/debuff, cc, just do things for the team that weren’t traditionally for healer, dps, tanks, yet essential for making things smoother.
I get that GW2 does not have traditional roles, but I was wondering which class could play this kind of “utility” role.
If I am being too broad, I would prefer to play the class that could best kite and/or cc.
Sounds like Elementalist is the profession for you.
Mesmer gets my vote.
Veil, feedback, null field and time warp = crap loads of utility.
They have good specs for all gameplay (PvE,pop,WvW,solo) and can kite very well too.
This is my solo roamer spec and it works great.
