I bought the game back in 2012 but never really played it much then and now I finally decided to jump on again and give it a try.
I got a lvl 26 ranger (asura) for the moment as my primary account, but I don’t know what other professions to choose. I have been thinking on Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist, Mesmer, Thief (just maybe engineer). But I only have 4 character slots left and I really want a ranger.
I’m most interested in PVE (haven’t really tried much due I’m low level)

In preparation for playing other characters I’ve created Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist and a Mesmer, but I really want a thief but can’t chose which one to delete.

If you say “try all, decide after” at what level does the classes become fun/good in that case?

Warrior is widely regarded as one of the simpler, more straight forward, and frankly boring professions. It’s also one of if not the most played professions. I’d also argue warrior and guardian play sort of similar. Both are heavy armor front line types, while the others you listed are more unique.

You’re able to buy additional character slots with in-game gold if that influences you. It’s a massive sum for a new player, but if you get into the game you’ll be able to buy them whenever you want to save up for a bit.

I would actaully level one of your character to level 80 just to learn the game. After that you have probably been able to watch the other classes and can try them out.

The conversion rate varies based on the market, but I used gold to buy character slots for all 8 core professions. It’s cheap for a regular player. It’s not cheap for a beginner.

Delete your Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist and Mesmer, and just create a Thief and Necromancer.

You can check the gem prize in game. In the right bottom there is a button where you can convert to your own choice and you can check how much gold you would need for that. If you at some point will do the actually converting, then make sure you do it at the right time of the day and you will save a lot of gold. The convert ration changes all the time.
