Why am I getting loot I can't use most of the time?
Because the RNG gods want people using the trading post. You could also salvage things you don’t need for mats.
Why does it matter? Heart vendors make this a none issue.

It’s a valid question for someone playing GW2 as their first MMO. Some people dont know about random drops, or salvage/vendor loot. I saw this question a few times too on the TSW forums from first time MMO players.
I haven’t purchased anything from heart vendors as I always seem to have better equipment then what they have for sale. I’m not complaining as I salvage everything I can’t use anyway I was just curious as to why I’m getting more stuff that’s designed for other professions compared to stuff designed for my profession

Because there’s most stuff you cannot use than stuff you can use in the game.
All that wrong profession loot is your main source of income!
Starting out, I salvaged everything under 20c and sold the rest to vendors. Buy the time I hit level 40, I had more than enough gold to buy the manual to open the next tier of traits.

I never thought of doing this, I’ve been struggling with money and never thought of selling the stuff I can’t use lol. Thank you for this suggestion
You’ll also find this a LOT with zone completion. 9 times out of 10 I got medium or heavy armour, and I needed light. In other games this might be an issue, and at first, I was just vendoring it off, or throwing it in the bank for if/when I had another character that could use it, even though had I been able to wear it, it would have been a nice upgrade.
But slap that puppy on the trading post, and purchase the equivalent. You pay your 15% trading fee (5% listing fee and 10% tax) and get what you actually can use. But your average green/blue I always sell to the vendor, at no cost, vs putting on the Trading post at a 15% loss. And I salvage all white, as the ‘mats’ you get back are usually worth more then the white item.
This also depends heavily on your profession. There are 19 weapon types.
Guardians and warriors can use 11 different weapons each, more than half of the weapon drops they’ll get.
Engineers can use only 4, and I’m sure they feel like they get a lot of extra junk. Elementalists can use 5 and I know it feels like I never get weapons that I can use on mine.
Each profession is balanced around the number and types of weapons they can use. Engineers don’t need as many because they have kits. Elementalists don’t need many weapons because they have elemental attunements instead – each weapon acts as if it were four different weapons.
Sell off the stuff you don’t need to buy stuff you do need. Most leveling gear is very cheap on the trade post. It’s a worthwhile investment to update your gear when it gets 10 levels outdated.
I’ve been as angry as anyone else when I’ve never got loot I could use. But, the way I figure it, if I did – then loot would suddenly become rather uninteresting. If loot dropped that was always specific to my class or specific to a particular build I had – then the interest of that loot suddenly drops off.
It’s the luck of the draw, but as we all get personalized loot and rewards, it’s far better. Remember the rolls for “I need that for offspec”? Good riddance (though that was slightly off topic! ).
