Why are you people saying "toon" ??
I’ve always hated the word “toon”, I’m glad to see that other people do too. I used to play Everquest for years (starting around ’97) and we all referred to our characters as, well, “characters” or the class name, like “let me log on my warrior”. I never saw “toon” until around 2005 when I started playing World of Warcraft.
I feel like the general playerbase of Guild Wars is made of older MMO’ers like myself who remember a time before WoW. I like seeing some of these posts from these people.
I loled at this thread and I loled even more that it has generated such a discussion.
How about we take this one step further and generate some quotes using this word:
- To the battlefield…my TOONS
- It’s over 9000 TOONS?!
- To TOON or not to TOON
- TOON in to the next episode of…
- Who TOON’d this kitten?

I started reading Science Fiction in .. 1974? Back before cool people had anything to do with it. And the true aficionados knew it was abbreviated as “SF.” That “Sci-Fi” referred to space westerns with blasting ray guns and other b-movie schlock, not to any worthwhile writing. You could get the most amazing rise out of a fan by calling it sci-fi. I was one of those purists back then.
And sometime in college in the 80’s I realized how very petty it was to worry that much about semantics. It simply wasn’t worth the blood pressure. Words can be used to cut and hurt, of course, but don’t get upset at the words themselves, get upset at the malign intent behind them.
I really don’t think anyone here formed the habit of calling their game character a toon as a calculated insult against all right thinking people. Let it go. Enjoy life, avoid ulcers, and allow for vocabulary differences. Please?
Well, Sci-Fi has become an accepted term, but SyFy is still offensive.

But SyFy makes geeks sounds coooool when they say it…

Got it from City of Heroes. If you don’t like it, ignore it.

I don’t like the word “toon” either, but it’s not really enough for me to get angry over. Now if somebody tried to stop me calling my characters “characters” and call them toons instead, THEN I’d take them to task. :P
Ive been calling them “toons” since early on in Everquest. Many reasons for why the term is used or how it originated. Basically easier than typing avatar or character. Bottom line is that Ive been using it as a term for a loooong time and have no inclination to stop. If you dont like it there isnt much you can do about it short of disabling chat or quitting. Kind of like I hate people complaining about really insignificant or st*pid kitten.
