Why do the dragon fights?
First and fore most, the obvious, they are dragons, why wouldn’t you want to go fight an epic dragon in an MMO. I scratch my had just trying to comprehend why this question needs to be asked.
Also they drop rares, exotics, and all other manners of gear.
Yeah I take it that the loot potential is pretty good, as large world events like that will often drop a chest with a lot of good stuff for you.
But mostly… I want to fight a dragon! Killing them should be epic and fulfilling in itself.
I find the Claw of Jormag pretty entertaining, running right in front of the dragon while everyone else wimps out to the side on cheapo ledges is great fun, the other two are fairly boring since they don’t require as much effort, but they all give good drops.
I find the dragons pretty boring in Gw2 and they don’t even really give very good drops compared to doing a DE zerg… I won’t go into why the dragons are boring here, but I hope they end up doing more with future large scale events.
“Why do the dragon fights?”
Because … they … are … THERE!
(And kitten good fun, too).
Just something nice about killing dragons. Big, scary things just calling out for a knight to slay them.
Maybe for some people they just want the Achievements but not me.
The loot is ok sometimes but I could get same or better by doing other things.

The Claw of Jormag is one of the few places outside the Mystic Forge where you can get a legendary precursor.
I do these fights because I love open-world epic fights. No, these aren’t the most elaborate events ever conceived, however for “vanilla” content, they aren’t too shabby (It took EQ at least 4 expansions to equal the complexity, WoW didn’t in the open world—in instanced content they had it by the first expansion, although not at launch, as I recall).
So of us just play the game because we find it to be fun.
