Ever get gear that you can’t get rid of? I might pick up some down scale gear (-5 -10 protection), compared to what I already have equipped and try SALVAGING it and the game won’t let me? If I can’t find someone to sell it to I end up destroying it to rid the item(s) from my inventory.

Is there a timer or a >/= counter limiting what you can salvage?

Most of the time it’s stuff you buy with karma that you can’t salvage (so that you can’t turn karma into gold, I suppose). Don’t know what other restrictions there are though.

One thing to do with it, not that I ever get organized enough, is to toss 4 such items into the Mystic Forge and see what comes out. For me the Forge basically returns 1 item of exactly the same quality and value as each of the 4 I tossed in, so I really don’t use the thing. However, with the non-vendor/non-salvage items, you will at least get one item you can trade or sell or salvage.

Yeah, the karma items are the only normally-salvageable items I’m aware of that you can’t salvage. I don’t understand the reason why, either. If it’s so you can’t convert karma into gold…that’s not exactly a great exchange anyway for the rate more salvaged goods go for. Also, when you’re level 80 and you’ve gotten the exotics you want, why not let a player convert karma into gold? Karma isn’t doing much for that player anyway.

The only reason I can think of to not allow a player to salvage a karma item is so newer players will keep them around for a bit and realize that karma items look unique from other weapons and armors in game.

I think the reward items also can not be salvaged (from personal story). also guild back pieces. and ascended rings.
I can see why the karma items, but everything else is just silly.

Now I wonder if its worth it – travel expenses to the Mystic forge and back and all. Since I get most my gear from Karma vendors – that must be why I can’t salvage it.

No, that’s not true at all. Items are either marked as sellable/salvageable or not. Soulbinding changes nothing.

Go into WvW and use the forges there. Enter/leave via the WvW menu (rather than the gates in lion’s arch) and you’ll go back to wherever you started in PvE.

Of course this is assuming your server doesn’t have queues.

Because the gemstore is tied to real money, and you’re able to convert gold into gems, ArenaNet perceive that it would be very easy for people to completely bypass the real world cash to gems aspect of the store by converting karma goods to gems.
To be honest, I think they’ve been a little heavy handed with this and chose a knee-jerk reaction in making it this way. They should have let the market balance itself out over time.
After all, what’s the difference between earning gold and earning karma when we really get down to it?
Both are simply expenditures of player time.
In fact, you could argue that it’s easier to make gold than karma, hence all the bots out there.

You can’t break down unfinished crafted items, a ring with no stone etc.
