Working towards my first legendary, any tips?
I always get my 77 clovers before i look at what mats I need. As you always get loads of t6 mats. Farming the Sw even will net you a lot of mats and rares to salvage for ectos. But dont dismiss teh orr champ farm. The trash mobs often drop t6 mats . So maybe use some guild commendations get some hero banners and buy the MF boost with laurels . Some MF food and celebration booster and get cracking, Especially the grenth event. That is crazy farming.
Ps: farm a train/a map/ for only an hour and switch to another to make sure you are not punished by DR

Punished by DR?
DR = diminished returns (mechanism Anet uses to discourage prolonged farming).
I suggest you break it out into a checklist. List all components required. Focus on one until complete, then move to the next.
Both times I made a legendary T6 mats took the longest to acquire. So I left those for last.
Focus on the easy ones, Gift of Exploration, Gift of Thorns or Gift of Wood.

Oh wow, I never knew about that. So the people farming SW all day, are they suffering that? So many people stay they and make up to 20-30g a day on it. Just curious.
Also, right now I am working on Gift of Exploration and Gift of Thorns, but spending gold to do the MF recipe to get clovers and T6 mats. My buddy actually gave me all his without even asking him, so he gave me a great head start. Last night I was 2 Deadly Blooms short of Gift of Thorns -_- And while map completing, I am like a fiend hitting up every tree I see.
get the clovers first. by the time you have the 77 you need you will be very close to finishing your T6 mats.
other tips:
while saving up your elder wood, farm in orr and sell the foxfire clusters you get. profits go to more T6 mats.
spend laurels. if you don’t plan on using these for anything else, dump them into T6 mat bags. each laurel gives you 3 such mats. pretty good return for something you don’t have to work toward to achieve (just have to wait for the laurels to come in.)
convert mats. if you have an abundance of T5 mats these can be converted to T6 with a pretty good rate (50 T5 —> 7-14 T6) for each forging.
if you get lucky with the mystic clover forge and get a stack of charged lodes, sell them and buy T6 mats.
if you have a ton of extra gold and you dont feel like just buying mats outright, you can gamble a bit and buy Heavy Moldy Bags. you’ll get a fair amount of T6 mats and a lot of T5 mats, which can then be converted to T6 (see above)
you can also dump your karma for orrian jewelry boxes, for gold and chances at lodes. some of these will sell for enough gold to get 5-25 more T6 mats. just like laurels, don’t spend your karma unless you have nothing else to spend it on (obsidian, etc)
the precursor is the hardest part, by far, and you have that finished.
map exploration is the longest part, and you are nearly finished with that.
the rest will fall into place very soon for you.

Gold is super scarce from buying a bunch of stuff already, but these are great tips.

No they dont since they chest farm that drop items not mob farm that have dr tied to it
Converting T5 to T6 is only useful for powerful blood though, on the other mats the process is questionable.
Also the chests in Sw drop the Obsidian shards so you might be able to save up some Karma.

Id say this is true if you only plan on selling your results (armored scales fall into this category too) but if you are actually using the mats you may as well convert the T5’s you aren’t using to begin with.
It’s the crystalline dust that ruins the deal. Well that and the gamble on your output.
The recipe evens out at 7 T6 mats gain per conversion. So if you want to do this, calculate your cost and check if it isn’t cheaper to outright sell your T5 and buy T6.

I agree, I gained but I also lost most of my dust because of the conversion. I don’t feel it’s worth, but yea. As of this morning I am at 99% map completion. So the next phase shall begin, I’m about 40% through with my t6 mats. So I’ll need to think about what to do next and I need 100 gold for Icy Runestones -_- I’m at 7g -_-
Don’t forget, if you build up more ectos than you need for this while low on dust – you can salvage the ectos for crystalline dust. It was handy in my case, since I often have a lot of ectos hiding away, and needed 3 stacks of t6 dust for Bifrost.

Since you still have a ways to go, every time you have the gold, do the Jormag event and buy 10 Icy Runestones. It hurts a lot less if you buy them incrementally vs laying out the 100 gold all at once plus you get any champ bags and chest rewards from the event for stuff to sell or salvage.
As for clovers and obsidian shards, don’t forget the Chest of Loyalty at the end of the month for daily log in rewards. I always take the legendary materials which helped quite a bit in those areas.
Keep salvaging rares for ectos and salvage half of those for dust so you keep a decent number of each on hand in your bank all the time. Constant small progression in making your legendary is easier than having to stop and start because you run out of materials or gold. I only did conversions very near the end for the last little bits of material (mainly the powerful blood and vicious claws). It did take some time but was very worth it for the finished product. I made The Moot and am working on Rodgort’s Flame right now.
I printed off the material list on the wiki and checked off what I had already and made notes on what I needed. That helps with forming a game plan to work on the things you want and shows you how much you have gotten done. Go out and do what you want to do daily but you can focus on areas that will produce the mats you want but try to change it up so you don’t feel like you are on a huge grind. One day I will do the champ train and then head over to Southsun Cove and Karka farm for a bit (great for the powerful blood). Another day I run around Malchor and Cursed Shore farming and doing some events – there are always event trains running there. Some days I just take a break, get my dailies done, do a bit of WvW and go back to looking for mats the next day.
Keep at it and you will get there eventually and be very proud of the work you put into your weapon.
Laurels, to get T6 mats. do sPvP on a dungeon track to get “free” exotics to throw in the forge. if you don’t get a pre, sell what you get on the TP.

Tip number one: never use mf for gambling for precursor.
Great tips guys, last night got my Gift of Mastery after finishing my world completion. Without paying for mats, I’ll need to get about 200 gold just to get the runestones and craft to 400 for the Unicorn Statue and Gift of Wood. Decided last night to do some PVP, and I went ahead and printed out a list as well. Right now I’m wondering what’s the best way to get the mats I need without just trying to get gold to spend on them.
Aerinndis.2730 gave a great tip for powerful bloods in Southsun cove, are there any other places where I can get other mats? Also, what’s the best way to get all the wood I need, are those level specific areas?
I don’t believe there is a single T6 farm that has a higher output than simply farming the cash for it.
You can find wood farming routes online, those work pretty well. There are also maps online in which you input your /ip and they show you eg. ancient wood nodes.
Another general tip is having 3 characters at lv30, 40 and 50. If you open your masterwork bags you get in the Silverwastes on them, you get level appropriate items to salvage. Works best for cloth of course, but you get a lot of wood, leather and metal too.

Haha I have 9 level 80s. Darn haha. More great tips.

Assuming you have nothing else you need to spend them on then Laurels are a good way to finish of your stacks for legendaries.

Yea, I have 0 laurels, about everyday because I immediately spend them on mats.

Vicious claws seem to be hard to come by like the blood. I don’t know any reliable spot where you can get lots of them but you can check the wiki where there is a Dropped By location drop down you can click on to see what types of creatures and where they drop them. I think all of the wiki entries have that. Wood is a lot easier to get as it is everywhere. I sometimes make runs through a map just for those resources.
Stockpile the T5 mats so that as you near the end you can convert those into T6 if needed. I am doing that for cores for Rodgort as the Lodestones are harder to come by. I convert just a bit at a time as I can afford them.
My plan is slowly farm materials and do not buy precursor at all.
HoT is behind the corner (kinda) and I can wait to do precursor quest. Also I expect price of precursor to go way down.
do events in Orr. heavy moldy bags. there really isnt any other reliable source of these short of laurels and just buying them.
if you get into a speedclear group you can run several dungeons in a night and earn up towards 30g a run, a day. (AC all paths, CM all paths, TA up/fwd, SE 1 and 3, CoF all paths (3 is not that hard with a good group) CoE all paths, HotW path 1, etc…)
You will end up with a few T6’s, a few lodes or cores to sell, and at least 1g at the end of each dungeon. Each gold will give you 3-5 more T6, times 17 dungeons… you get the idea.
Another source for (random) T6 mats is in SW. The vendor in the main camp has a second tab. The bottom item is a bag that you get for some bandit crests and copper. I’d say roughly 20-25% of the bags hold a T6 mat. Before crests became a currency I used to regularly buy up enough bags to get my crests below 2K and it was always nice to see crystalline dust pop up as I opened them.
I don’t know how it compares to other sources, but if you’re swimming in crests it will only cost you a few silver to test the drop rate, and you can sell the lesser mats to recoup the silver.

While this is definitely something that’s going to happen, I’m not sure the precursor prices will drop significantly. Since you’re only going to be able to get one legendary per character (with this new mastery), and the amount of work put into it might be more than earning gold towards a precursor now. I plan on eventually getting as many legendaries as I can, so I’ll either have to get it dropped or by another precursor.
Also, I won’t be buying HoT immediately due to several reasons.
As for other T6 mat related stuff. I’ve been able to get at least a few of them via SW, it’s been a great return on investment, whether with gold or T6 mats. Right now I could say I am at about 70% with getting my mats, 40% overall for the legendary.

As I understand it, you will be able to get one of each current precursors via quest.

Correct, but you can only choose one of those per character. So you can’t go for Quip and Incinerator on your thief. You’ll have to go for one or the other. That of course is not to stop you from going for that precursor on your other characters, but because the process is not as easy/OP as people think, the precursor prices won’t be as dramatic as some are expecting.
What is your source for one per character? As I recall it’s one of each precursor craftable per account. And then they are account bound, so you could in fact shuffle Quip and Incinerator both onto your thief.
I think the mastery system for the legendary will work a little differently.
According to the wiki, it’s an account unlock progress thing, kind of like the pvp reward tracks. You set a character on legendary mastery, earn enough exp to unlock your first collection (you choose which precursor to unlock), then start scavenger hunting to complete said collection. If you continue on the track and gain more exp you can unlock another one.
So far it’s unclear if you need to finish one before starting another, if multiple characters can have the same progress or if they have their own, or if these will work like this at all.
In either case, the resulting weapons will always be account bound so you can swap them on to whichever character you want, and you’ll also unlock the skin so you can always cosmetically have a legendary on anything with the cost of a trans charge once it’s unlocked.
As masteries will be account wide, not character specific, all your alts on the account will share your progress.

This is assuming there isn’t anything more recent, but I haven’t heard of anything about this since.

This crafting system is an account-based activity, which means you’ll only be able to craft each precursor this way once. However, all of the currently existing precursor acquisition methods will remain intact in addition to this new acquisition method. That means that if you want a particular precursor more than once, you’ll have to fall back to the original methods of acquisition.
Sure sounds like we’ll be able to make each precursor on a single character, just can’t make each one this way multiple times.
If you have a newer source, by all means, post it.

Ok, maybe I was confused then, but it also seems it would be much more difficult then I had heard to obtain more than one. I don’t think it’s at easy as people assume, and still don’t think the precursor prices will drop dramaticlly.
Also it’s getting off topic a bit haha.
