Q:
WvW foot speed
A:
A thief can burst a distance of 3000 units (Shadowstep, Infiltrator’s Arrow, Steal) without additional traits to increase steal distance, while leaving initiative to attack. It leaves them vulnerable as usually Shadowstep is the single stunbreaker, but your fleeing reaction must have tipped them off that it wouldn’t be a problem.
Inactive: Guardian, Elementalist, Ranger, Thief (ex-main)
Leveling: Engineer, Necromancer
if it was mesmer that caught you, then distances wasn’t that great – their effective attack range ~2400, if they use traited blink as opener
my guess would be that thief caught up with you and slow you don’t so that others can catch up. but thieves can do that only with certain builds and wasting all their initiative
P.S. from my wvw 1v1 experience guardians are easy prey if they are far away their towers, keeps and allies, as they lack mobility to escape
I have cleared the PVE content, and I have started to participate in WvW.
I joined as my guardian and I started to wander around (not picking fights, just exploring). Anyway, I spotted 3 enemy players quite a distance away. Obviously, I did not want to fight, so I popped “Retreat!” and ran in the opposite direction from them. They still managed to catch me within a few seconds. In the end, I died and they started to teabag my corpse.
I remember one of them is a thief and another is a mesmer. How did they cover so much ground so quickly?
Certain skills in the game can make you cover distance faster than what you could by running. This is especially important in WvW, so you can expect any WvW player worth their salt to know and use those skills.
Probably a combination of standard speed boosts, leap/dash attacks and moves that teleport you to your target. It’s especially common for solo/small group roamers for exactly this reason – they usually rely on closing with their target and getting at least a few hits in before the enemy knew they were there. (And if they happen to come across the enemy zerg and need to get away.)
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
If you are roaming as a Guardian and want more speed, an easy solution is to wield a Staff. The number 3 skill gives you swiftness and if I remember right, there is only a 5 second difference between the duration and cool down so you can run with almost a constant 25 percent speed boost.

Until Dec 10th that is.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Guardians are very weak at evading. Run staff as previously mentioned and spam 3 when you are able, run retreat, and also use Greatsword 3 for a leap. Cycle between these three when you are in need to evade. Also, if you know you are being chased cast Staff 5 to knock down those who don’t run stability.
It is important to switch utilities and weapons when engaging in combat. To make this easier you can keep your backpack open in the corner of your screen or your hero menu.
I would suggest running in a small group if you are new to WvW. You will learn the game mechanics quicker than running in a zerg because you will be forced to pay attention more. If you run solo you will be trolled by thief’s all day.
Guardian has decent mobility
Sword 2
Greatsword 3
Judges Intervention
Retreat
Stand Your Ground if someone tries to stunlock you
Plenty of condition cleansing skills+traits
5 seconds of block+invuln with shelter and renewed focus
Target a monster for sword 2 and Judges Intervention and be careful not to be too close or you will be put into combat speed.
Good luck out there!

Is it wrong that make me laugh really hard ?
Ya, most classes have leaps/teleports/gapclosers, experienced players can use them fast and catch up from huge distances sometimes
