Hi all,

I just started GW2 a couple of weeks back and have a decent amount of MMO experience under my belt. Now, I normally stick to a ‘tanky’ class, but since this game is not about the holy trinity, I’ve been playing around with different professions.

So far I’ve made a necro, ele, guardian and thief.

I got bored with the necro within two days. Playing ele was downright exhausting. The Guardian was awesome at soloing (was easily soloing veterans 3 – 4 levels above my own), but slow as hell. The thief was again good at soloing (skirmishing with a SB and Death Blossom) and has great mobility.

I was wondering if there are any other professions that I should experiment with before choosing a main. My play style is as follows -

1. Plan to stick to PVE, dungeons and light PVP
2. Love soloing things that aren’t meant to be soloed
3. Would love a class that can run fast (Swiftness) or has a lot of mobility
4. Would like to bring a respectable amount of group support to a team while dungeoning

Any thoughts and suggestions would be more welcome.

What do you mean by slow?

Slow to kill opponents or slow moving around?

Guardians have access to loads of swiftness…so there not slow at moving around…

Warriors kill faster and are more durable then the thief…

I was fine with the killing speed for the most part (using a hammer/GS). It was the movement speed that I felt was slow. Of course, I could be imagining things, seeing as I made a huge lumbering Norn.

Will definitely be trying out a Charr Warrior today after I get home from work.

Right now i’m playing each race/class till level 20 to get a fair idea of the personal quest and gameplay. So far, I’ve liked every race except Human.

1) So no WvW? K,thief is out.Definetly.
2) Warrior,Guardian,Ranger are the best suited for this, Engineer and Necro do such thing well too.
3) Anything except mesmer for this one.
4) Elementalist,Guardian,Mesmer,Engineer,Necromancer bring all huge group support.
Elementalist has AoE heals and aura share builds.
Guardian,well,the name speaks for itself.
Mesmer can spread boons all around
Engineer can provide CC,healing, conditions and boons
The Necro spams conditions on any enemy, while healing others and providing varions boons and condition removals.
The Warrior has shout builds and banners.
The Ranger has spirits (many underestimate spirits, they’re powerful).
The Thief has AoE stealth,a LOT of support through venoms and is an excelent reviver.

Thanks for the in-depth response!

I haven’t tried WvWvW yet, but I do plan to give it a shot, so let’s not discount Thief just yet.

Apart from that, I’ve tried necro and ele (albeit at low levels) and their playstyle didn’t quiet suit me. So far I’m in love with the SB and by that logic, I owe it to myself to give Ranger a shot as well.

So I guess I’ll delete either the necro or the ele and create a Ranger after I’ve tried Warrior.

Here’s to hoping that I finally have my main finalised before the upcoming long weekend

PS: The only profession I don’t see myself playing is the Engineer and from the responses I’ve gotten till now, Mesmer seems out too.

Lets see if we get a match.
Guardian: 1, 2, 4 with a minor in 3;
Warrior: 1, 3, 4 with a minor in 2;
Ranger: 1, 2, 3 with a minor in 4.

What do you consider most important? I would say Ranger would fit your criteria most. You’d have to practice good builds for dungeons though and will fall under the stigma of “ranger = bad for dungeons”.

Warrior and Guardian have no trouble getting dungeon parties however, but are either more easily defeated and in trouble once downed state hits, or a hassle to keep speedy.

Joy to the world, ignorance is bliss

Definitely give Warrior a shot, and if getting bored is an issue give Engineer a shot.

Hmm to me Ranger would be the best suited for you, they’re great for support and with the pets they can solo a lot of things.

Don’t rule them out just yet, try them and see how they play. If you plan to do some PvP it’s good to have an idea of what the other classes can do.

Even so at first I didn’t wanted to play a Guardian, was decided to start with an Elementalist. But then when the game released I made a Guardian just for the heck of it… And well somehow it ended up as my main >.>
