If you have a recipe, and it says you already know it, and it can be used by more than one discipline, and you have one of the disciplines, but not the other(s), is it telling you that for ‘all’ disciplines you know the recipe?

Does it say something different if I know the recipe for the discipline(s) I have that it pertains to, but I could learn it with one of the remaining disciplines listed?

What if you know none of the disciplines and it says you already know it?

Last year, Anet made it so that recipes can be consumed by any character (regardless of whether they have ANY crafting leveled), unlocking it for every character on the account. So, if you unlock a recipe for a Carrion Intricate Gossamer Insignia on your Tailor, the recipe will unlock for your Armorsmith and Leatherworker (even if you don’t have an Armorsmith or Leatherworker, it’ll be unlocked when you make an Armorsmith or Leatherworker).

Came back in December after about a 15 month hiatus.

That’s actually pretty awesome, so if it says you know it, you know it.

If you come across recipes for 3 professions and you know 1 currently (maybe because you got it before the change), it will let you use it again to then populate the other 2 you don’t know, at which point it’ll show as “you know this recipe” for everyone?

Yes. If one character learns a recipe, then every character (including ones you may make in the future) will learn it. This includes recipes that your characters learned before the change went in (you just have to log into every character on your account to have their learned recipes be added to the account-wide recipes).

Yes, the change really has helped me out of a big pinch when I was experimenting with other characters. So now, you can learn it from a character who DOES NOT have the profession, and have it available for the one who does. For recipes that involve multiple professions, one recipe unlocks it for all professions.

What it really means is “You have already unlocked this recipe for your account.”

Thank you very much folks, that was helpful, and it’s a great change.

It was so good, I didn’t even realize how much it mattered until after they added it.

I used to have spreadsheets tracking who knew what recipe and I tried to make sure that a specific character was in charge of learning inscriptions & insignia (so I always knew who to choose to make them). So much tedium.

By the way: this only works for consumable unlocks; discovered recipes still have to be discovered on each toon (which is great for learning your disciplines, not so great otherwise).

When I came back to the game a couple of months ago I found out about this when I wasted some karma on a recipe without noticing the red text that I already knew it. That’s because I knew the character I was on had not learned it and I wasn’t looking for it.

I know now.
