Heya everyone,

I recently started making Saphir Light Armor for my mesmer, but I’m literally stunned, and in despair, after seeing how much bolt of silk I need for the Bolt of Damask!!!

So my question is, the best way to farm scraps of Silk to make into bolt of silk? Is it really just to farm Worldbosses and other blue and green gears to salvage with a yellow salvage kit?

Rlly need some advice here as it’s rather overwhelming for a rather new player… (playing 1 month now)

Are you doing this because you want to or because you think it’s needed to play the game?

If you are doing it for the looks or just to have a goal then it’s fine but the final stat increase on that armor is tiny and is not needed to play the game. The vast majority of people are still using exotics and the game is made to be played using exotics.

This armor can be easily set aside to be crafted later when you have more money and mats.

As to the silk, most people I think farm gold and put in buy orders in the trading post.

I completed one light armor set. It took about two months for me as I don’t have very much gold. It is a lot of work but if you find it fun to do, go for it.

Do not waste a yellow (Master Salvage kit) on those blues and greens. Especially the lvl 80 ones. It will not give you more silk, it may give you more gossamer. A basic salvage kit works just fine.

And before you decide on what Ascended Armor to make, get the equivalent exotic and test if it is what you like to wear. It would be a shame to spend all the time and effort and end up with stats you don’t enjoy.

If you do a lot of event farming in Orr with decent magic find, you’ll get a lot of armor drops which you can salvage for silk (if light armor).

If you don’t need mithril or leather, you can sell the other armor and weapons you find to help fund your trading post acquisition of silk as well.

As mentioned above, use the basic salvage kit (I recommend the copper-fed salvage-o-matic for convenience purposes) as higher tier kits won’t help you get more silk.

Farm events in Cursed Shore and salvage everything. I do temples every day and a few others and i end up with lots of silk. I find cotton and wool hard to come by since i’m always in high level zones.

Harathi Hinterlands for cotton and linen.
Gendarran Fields for wool and cotton.

In both cases you’re going to want to do events that spawn a ton of Centaurs because the bags they drop are laden with fabrics.

I do want ascended as I’m already very comfortable with Assassin exotics and want to do something with my lvl 80 other than doing it all again on alts
The yellow salvage kits are rather cheap so I don’t mind using them. I only use BL kits for exotics from fractals (if I ever get them) cause I also need echo’s
Anyway, thanks for all the info! I’ll try get those bolt of damask soon!!!

But using a yellow kit on light armor doesn’t give me a bigger chance at getting silk?
And I only get silk from salvaging light armors?

I usually salvage “Disgarded Garment”. But I am not sure if that is the best way or not.

The better your salvage kit is, the more it has chance to give the highest possible material which in this case is gossamer. And you want silk.

Yellow kits should be used on rare and exotic armor and weapons. Black Lion Kits, unless you have a ton of them, should be saved and only used on exotics with very expensive runes or sigils.

The kit quality does not improve the number of silk scraps you get. It can cause you to get gossamer instead of silk though which is why you want to avoid using higher quality kits (since gossamer is not as valuable as silk).

Use the Basic kit for all white, blue, and green tier gear.

If you have a lot of karma sitting around, use the bloodtide coast heart vendor by the crabs to get the blue gloves. Throw them in the mystic forge to get gloves to salvage for linen. Sell and use the gold to buy silk. Sounds complicated but really quite easy. If you want help just message me.

I think I’m better off farming CS and selling all my stuff and buying the cotton and wool. I’m bored to death of low level areas where it’s hard to find any loot. But ty for the suggestions.

When I was farming grawl for large skulls, I got quite a bit of silk. They drop a salvageable pelt that often yields silk, as well as bags that contain silk. I also got a few rare weapons, tier 5 totems and bones. I farmed them in the southern part of frostgorge for about 30 minutes at a time using whatever magic find buffs I could get. I don’t have exact numbers, but I ended up with a nice amount of materials each session.

Personal experience. Yes, those are the grawl I’m talking about. I used to get decent drops there but I was there this week after a long time not farming there. Got nothing but trophy clumps of fur/vendor trash. Not anything useful. I asked in map chat if it had been nerfed and was told it had been some time ago, but of course, I can’t confirm. However, do keep in mind that ANet does the “stealth nerf” on occassion – and that’s not tin foil hat stuff. Drop in champ box coin is one perfect example. They never said it was happening, then people noticed the drop and posted in the forums and ANet was all “oops, did we forget to mention that??!!! Our bad!!”

I won’t be going there again, since it seems a complete waste of time now.

I used to buy high level cloth items and salvage them for Silk, but competition for them is getting really, really fierce now. As such, I’ve resorted to just buying a stack of Silk each day and paying for it by selling my other materials that I gather. (I have a surplus of metal and wood thanks to my Mass Gathering playstyle.)

The karma method is another good one, but I’m currently low on karma after spending a ton of it completing the T3 Cultural weapon collections.

Use your lvl80 Character, go to the edge of the mists, find a commander and join the train. Kill the guards and get packages and loots, it contains tons of fine or mastered even rare or exotic light armor, salvage those. Fine and Mastered use the basic salvage kits(or a Copper-fed one), Rare use yellow one, and exotic use BL Salvage kits.
Pro:
1.Get WvW EXP
2.Farm Several types of Materials
3.Loot bags contains skill point
4.More chance for exotic gear.
Con:
1.Easy to get bored and wanna sleep fast.
2.Too many bloodstone dust from loot bag, annoying to store it.
3.Needs personal skill to defeat enemy farmer lol

The break even point for using Black Lion Salvage Kits is currently 1g65s12c (the amount it costs to buy one use of a BLSK via gold to gem conversion). Unless you have a ton of them lying around, you should only use Black Lion Salvage Kits on exotic items where the Sigil or Rune is selling for 1g94s26c or more (this price, less the fees, will match the break even point). If the Sigil or Rune is selling for less than that, you are actually losing gold by using your BLSK and should be using a Master kit instead.

Exotic can give you 1-3 Glob of Ectoplasm which is a useful advanced materials and also have chance to get Glob of Dark Matter which is account bond to craft Ascended armors and weapons. And BTW, you have chance to get BL salvage kit when you finish your daily

You will get approximately 0.375 more Globs of Ectoplasm per salvage if you use the BLSK versus a Master’s Kit.

I haven’t seen any research (or done any of my own) on the increase in Dark Matter based on which kit you use, but I imagine it would be similar.

In both cases, the extra materials add up to a small fraction of the increased cost of using the BLSK so it does not make financial sense to use a BLSK unless the Rune/Sigil will sell for at least the amount I posted above.

Free BLSKs are super nice, and while they won’t “cost” you in the sense that you actually lose gold, they will “cost” you in the sense that you could have used them to make gold and didn’t.

There isn’t any direct way to farm silk fast. The only way is just kill large amount of mobs fast on events. But even that won’t give you large amount of silk.

Fortunately, you can sell your loot and buy silk from the trading post. Many people no longer need silk because they finished their ascended armor. So it is easier to buy from them.

I actually use the Mystic Forge to create 250-charge Mystic Salvage kits (Master Salvage Kit + Journeyman’s Salvage Kit + Fine Salvage Kit + 3 Mystic Forge Stones), and I use those on everything blue and above. I may change my stance on that when (if) I ever max my luck out, but I like getting those essences. I don’t have any crafting skills capable of making damask yet, but I’m sitting on 3 full stacks of silk scraps and counting.

It’s probably not a good idea to use master salvage kit… Since you’ll get gossamer. and silk sells more than gossamer.

you don’t get more luck with better kit by the way. Take it from someone who have 295 luck.

@OP : to get silk, there is only one technique.

Kill some stuff.

Just play the game and find some events with lots of mobs that drop regular loot. You’ll see yourself starting to pile up silk scraps. Usual locations are cursed shore and frostgorge.

As other said above : use basic salvage kits (or copper fed one) on anything below rare quality.

I like to do the CoF uncontested event on the bridge every time I am there for the dungeon. If you have a staff ele or staff guardian you can easily tag all the mobs and they are very likely to drop loot bags and discarded garments. I think from doing the 5min event once I usually easily get over 20 silk scraps. I’m not sure why more people don’t do it. It’s so great for making some extra money while trying to get into CoF.

I was talking about the grawl in the south of the map, near Arundon Vale. They seem to drop more loot than the ones near Jormag. I was farming them shortly after the patch to make the grawl weapons for the collection. Not sure when they supposedly got nerfed, but it would have to be in the last two weeks for my info to be outdated.

The breakeven point for BLSK is 1.6 gold worth rune, because of +ecto -fees effect.

In any case, to answer OP’s question, I just do Teq/Wurm/Speedrun dungeons then buy the silk. An hour of dungeons is worth approximately 8-9 gold (depending on drops in addition to guaranteed base), so…

I’d get gold for all the silk I need per day (approx 260 scraps as 40 I already get in drops within the dungeons) within half an hour. If you have a regular dungeon group it can be much faster, but my speed’s somewhat limited by running with LFG-pug groups. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes… not so.
