More just a quick question out of curiosity than actual need of help lol. To those of you who have gotten the new Zaishen Helm skin, how many tries did it take you? I’ve gone through 50 BL keys for the express reason of getting the helm and have been unsuccessful so it looks like its just not meant to be for me, but a friend of mine got it his first 5 lol. Just curious to see how many tries it took other people ;w;"

After a few weeks, you could try looking at the drop rate listed on the Wiki (once some players have posted data).

Like the elemental sword skin in the previous chest, I estimate it’s around 2-3%. It’s a SWAG but I think it’s realistic.

Remember, you first have to get a 4 slot chest first to have any chance and those odds have been debated as 10-15%.

During the Elemental Sword I stated I would’ve paid 600 gems for it, but no, anet didn’t want my money. I got like 30 keys in that period, and none of them dropped the sword.

Now that a cool helmet comes out, I wanted it, but alas, anet doesn’t want my money. I’m not allowed to buy it. Well, skritt’s tail, I’m not gonna buy another 31+ keys for a miniscule chance at the helmet….
600 gems is what I’m willing to pay for it, not several thousands

Well that’s the cold calculation isn’t it? By making it exclusive (at least for now) from the BLC, they figure they will make more money selling keys than selling a single item.

Also players need to get a sensible attitude about BLC. You are only guaranteed the seasonal item and one item from each line of common items (when you preview). Everything listed in the uncommon, rare and super rare pools is a “crap shoot”. By rotating most of these on every update to the chest, it keeps the interest high.

Players should never be fixated at getting a single item from the uncommon and up pools. That’s just asking for disappointment.

Whilst that’s good advice for people looking at chests generally it really sucks for people who want a specific item which is not available any other way. It basically means their only option is disappointment.

To me even if it does make more money that’s just bad game design. You shouldn’t be counting disappointing your players to make a profit.

I opened 100 yesterday and got 4 of them – all 4 in the second batch of 50 chests.
Take from that what you will, as rng is rng.

That’s another bad part, one player finds multiple, but can’t use the extras in any way, while other people don’t find a single one.
I mean, if they just weren’t acountbound, the unlucky people could buy the extras from the overly lucky ones.
And I don’t think it would affect the market much because they would probably cost as much kitten-100 keys in gold

i hate this. a nice skin and then its rng based wtf man we are not all rich. i cant get legendary armor its not made for me. i cant get legendary weapons becouse the amount of gold and time. black lion chest drops are very bad. do they even think about casual players or i mean not die hard mmo gamers. they have to reward everyone not only the most rich ppl. if you make nice things for noobs the more will buy xpack it sucks ppl have awesome legendary armor. i want a new outfit but the gems for gold are too expensive even it its in the morning. and do anet read my posts? nothing have changed i still get bad loot. and only very rich ppl have nice drops.

You might have something beautiful, which does not cost gems,(or 100+ gold) but you have already asked too much

Well it took me buying 50 keys, a friend buying me another 5 and then helping me harm an additional 18, and then another friend deciding to test just how terrible my luck is and buy me 25 more keys, but I finally have gotten the helm. And all it took was a little under 100 keys…..never again lol.

2 tries. But I also got 3 out of 30 keys. Plus other things like ~50 unid dyes, 2 weapon skins approx 35g each, and other misc items.

And yea it’s a nice helm skin, has 4 dye channels. Definitely worth those 30 keys \o/

Another little bit to take into account, I normally have terrible luck. So this was a nice surprise. And I wouldn’t say dump a boat load towards keys just to try and get it, maybe like 10 every now and then.

Well, I did a key run; didn’t get the Helm, but did snag the Mail Carrier. =)

my rng has changed.. tyvm for that. i enjoy the game very much at the moment.
right now i am not at home so i read forums
when i read all my posts i think. i must delete them. too bad.
oke.. i wanted this helm. i readed i need a 4th slot for it. i never got a 4th slot in a chest before. when i opened chests it was always only 1 key. so i was going for map completion and saved up the keys and i said to myself when i have 5 keys i open the chests. but then i saw there is a new patch coming and i was afraid that the helm got removed becouse another theme. so i had 4 keys and gave it a try. i used the first key and omg i got a 4th slot for the very first time. and it was the helm. i couldn’t believe it. i got an item from a chest with i normally have bad luck with. i am very happy. tyvm. i will keep this in my memory. i readed this drop rate here and felt bad but now i have something special. i saved 2 keys for other upcoming items.

I’m glad you’re feeling happy, and especially that you got the item you wanted, but what you’re describing…that’s not how RNG works.

“Your” RNG hasn’t changed, you had the same chance of getting it as you always did, and had you kept going you would have continued to see a similar proportion of “unlucky” and “lucky” chests. Likewise it doesn’t matter if you use the keys one at a time or all together, or if you collect chests the drops or buy them, or close your eyes while opening the chests or anything else. It’s random – that’s all there is to it.

Case in point: I just opened 11 chests in a row hoping to get the new mini pet and didn’t get it. I’ve previously opened just 1 chest with the only key I’d had for ages and gotten a claim ticket (full ticket, not a scrap). If the number of chests opened in a row has anything to do with it that should be the other way around.

oke maybe not changed but i had some lucky drops.
1 pre from forge and 18 days later another pre from the forge. i kept it on video
with shadowplay. i mean it changed. first few months unlucky and now i got some nice drops. 1 one of the pres i got is rage. the other i don’t say. it’s. bad.
even if the price is not the highest. it’s welcome becouse with 100 gold i feel rich.
but only the chance i got it made me feel happy and lucky. doing good with me
