Lots of people have toons. some have more then 5…..Thats awesome. I am not a father of 2 or a working mother. I am 24, with a life and a career. The way I see GW2 today is hard to make a second character unlike GW1. I am really wanting to roll an ele but:

- I would have to do the whole personal story again (thats fine).
- I have spent lots of gems into gold to buys some things for my mesmer (Not so fine for a second character – although Its easy to stretch 12 gold….)
- Dailies across two….three characters? – I log in for an hour as it is….just to do my dailie on my one character – I would feel so obligated.
- More grinding…..

These are my fears. See with GW1 I could log out for months, come back and create a new character…..The problem with that here is that there are content patches and updates and logging out for a month means you can miss a lot….

I feel like if I make a second character that more and more time for dailies, dungeons, fractals, leveling, grinding, crafting, real $$ ….

any advice?

I love playing my mesmer, but i’m bored after I do my dailies…..

If I don’t do my dailies on the ele, and I save my laurels on the mes, can I buy things like ascended gear for the ele or are things insta character bound on aquire?

The daily is account wide. So you don’t have to do the daily twice. And laurels are also account bound. So yes, you can buy things for your ele with the laurels earned on your mesmer.

Yes, you will of course end up with less stuff on each character, but in return you will get variety…just like every other game like this. However, many things are based on account and not character in this game. (You can even transfer gold, and karma using Lost Orrian Jewelry Boxes….although not at a 1:1 rate)

This game takes pretty great pains to not give too many advantages/disadvantages to people who prefer 1 character, 2, or 8….well until this current world boss debacle.

Why would you have to buy gems for gold to get anything for your alt…?

You also don’t have to do the Personal Story if you don’t want to.

You should do your dailies on your alt by the way. It gives you lots of exp.

While Dailies are account, the daily chests associated with things like The Maw do spawn for every toon you have so you would be able to farm more of those daily chest with more toons.

You know, the dungeon tokens are account bound. I only played dungeons with my warrior and when I leveled my thief to 80, I could use the tokens to gear my thief to exotic (+ascended rings from FotM). Dailies are even easier if you have 2 characters, because they can stay at different locations and you can swap the characters to do the daily tasks. The only bad thing is that you have to start at level 1 FotM again and the dungeon story (if your mates don’t have explorable). Besides, you don’t have to do the personal story again, but I don’t consider it as something that HAVE to be done, but something that CAN be done. (Remember to choose another order to get the flag on character select screen.)

The only thing that makes me crazy with alts is dyes. But you can get a nice pallet for about 1g so it is not all that bad.

- I would have to do the whole personal story again (thats fine).

If it’s fine, then why worry? Make different choices, and you get different story chapters too.

- I have spent lots of gems into gold to buys some things for my mesmer (Not so fine for a second character – although Its easy to stretch 12 gold….)

You don’t actually NEED to spend more gold on a character than the character earns by simply playing the game. Green items on the Trade Post are very cheap. You can save up for traitbooks. Dyes are the only thing really worth considering, but you can easily recoup that gold by selling Unidentified Dyes you find in the Trade Post.

- Dailies across two….three characters? – I log in for an hour as it is….just to do my dailie on my one character – I would feel so obligated.

As already mentioned, daily and monthly achievements are account-wide, and you can only do them once, regardless of how many characters you have.

- More grinding…..

There are ways to play the game that do not require grinding, but that do give XP and rewards. Completing an area for 100% gives sizable rewards, and it’s not really grinding because you get to do lots of different things as you travel through.

These are my fears.

And these are my answers.

I’m a 27 year old with a life and a career. I have 5 permanent characters and a 6th slot to make random extras. Never been a problem for me. Also it’s generally a bad idea to imply that parents have no life or career. Many have both and even the ones who are full time parents probably have a lot less free time than you do given that kids are a 24/7 job.

- For me doing the personal story again is one of the reasons for making alts. But if you don’t want to then you don’t have to. Unlike GW1 you don’t have to finish any of the story to access areas. You could ignore it completely if you wanted to.

- You can always just buy things for your alt at a slower pace. You only need 1 level 80 to be able to do everything so you won’t be missing out on anything while you save up for gear.

- As many people have already said dailies are account wide. I often find having multiple characters actually makes it easier because I can switch to one who’s already near lots of downed NPCs, or a crafting station or whatever I need instead of spending time travelling or money on waypoints.

- As for other things like new content being added a lot of it, like Dailies, is account wide or only needs to be done once. The only reason you’d need to do things like Fractals on multiple characters is if you want to try using a different playstyle. You can easily farm laurels or relics or whatever on one character and spend them on another.

Basically I think you should give it a try before deciding you do/don’t like the idea. If for some reason you do feel like it’s too much to handle you can go back to just using 1 character, but I think you’ll find in most cases you’ve misunderstood how the game works.

so what your saying is that if I made a new character things like dailies and laurels and other currencies except karma and what’s NOT in the bank are shared across the account? this includes dungeon tokens, fractals and laurels?

Dungeon tokens, Fractal relics, Laurels, Badges of Honor, everything you get out of Black Lion chests and Gemstore items are ALL “account bound”, which means that they are freely accessible to all characters on your account (but not to other players).

Only items that are “soulbound” cannot be picked up or equipped by your other characters. This typically only applies to masterwork and better equipment that you actually equip on your character, as well as equipment that you buy with karma.

Every single item says whether it is “account bound” or “soulbound” when you hover your mouse over it.
Every single vendor item that becomes “soulbound” or “account bound” if you buy it will also have that information when you hover your mouse over it in the vendor window.

Finally, many items (like coin, Mystic Coins, most equipment, many crafting ingredients) are not bound at all and can be given to other players or sold on the Trade Post.

- More grinding….. same amount of grinding as when you have just one character – an alt just gives you different skills to use while doing it

I have 11 characters and not one of them is completely geared up. Most of my 80s are in a mix of exotics and rares, cobbled together from whatever sources I can manage. It isn’t written anywhere that a character needs to be complete to enjoy playing it. Neither is it written exactly what a complete character is, so what’s the point of worrying about it?

The real reward for playing alts is being able to approach the game in a variety of different ways and swapping between them merely by re-logging. It has nothing to do with reaching some level of completeness. Any goals you attach to a character are options you are choosing to define your game by. They aren’t necessary. They’re just arbitrary requirements you elect to put in place.

That’s why there’s really no way to answer you because you’re choosing to attach strings to your enjoyment of playing an alt, that don’t actually exist. If playing an Elementalist looks like fun, roll one. How and when you cap it an gear it, should have little do with that decision.

I find it easier to complete dailies with multiple characters, new characters can complete several of the dailies while farming for crafting material and completing maps.

Why buy gems, when you can farm, craft, and sell items for needed items or gold! Farming & Crafting are always part of dailies.

GW2 is a game and as such its main purpose is to have fun. If you’re bored with your mesmer then you absolutely should roll an alt. Plus, as others have said, dungeons tokens & laurels & dailies are account wide. So you shouldn’t be left behind. Do anything that is fun. If that happens to be a new ele, then do it.

If you’ve been lavishing gold and attention on one character, a second character may not be as well outfitted or as strong if you don’t have time for that. But so what? Make a new character for the sake of trying out a new profession, playing with builds, seeing different things, etc. Have fun with it. If your mesmer remains the character you grab for Fractals of WvW because he/she is stronger, that’s not a problem. Plus, as others have said, a lot of what you earn is account-bound rather then character-bound so your new character can benefit from past accomplishments.

Make a new character for fun, and if you end up feeling like spending more time and effort on it, go for it. But you really don’t have to. Just play!
