best role for a WvW newb?
Build and use the siege machines.
Repair walls, upgrade the towers.
Help to capture supply mines.
Kill enemy dolyaks and protect your dolyaks.
Kill enemy sentry guards.
Win the Hyleks, Ogres and Quaggans for your side.
By running after the zerg, you won’t learn as much.

Listen to commanders in Zone. Escort Dolyaks is never bad. Stay at towers and keeps and call out if enemies attack. If you do, try and give numbers and guild. You should play to have fun though. The best way IMO is to join a guild that does WvW together.

@Darkace – Siege weapons have a 30 min timer on them before they despawn, a simple use of a skill will reset the timer.. boring job without any exp but your home server will benefit greatly from it!
Also as previously stated supply camps ect are pretty good for learning the basics.
[NOX] & [Coma] – Gunnar’s Hold.
nothing stopping you joining a friendly wvw guild to try and get a feel for the format either. It’s not like you have to leave your friends when you join another guild.

Just join the zerg if you are a solo player not in a guild, but if that is the case then join a guild that does WvW.
Being a new WvW I would say follow the zerg.
Manning the walls is a very boring job, and obviously not rewarding.
Gorilla only if you are a thief, like so many who are abusing the culling issue which gives them perma-stealth.
Escorting dolyaks on your own is certain death during primetime, if you are on your own. You want at least 2 more people with you. Thieves love people who solo-escort dollies, easy kills.
So stick with the zerg, learn how people move around, read team chat to find out how what other people are doing elsewhere, and learn from that.
Remember to buy the officially endorsed GW2 Steel Series Keyboard, it supports macros!
WvW, we only care if it affects the servers we play on.
-Man siege equipment.
-Do supply runs to build/repair towers and keeps.
-Roll with zergs and rez players in the downed state as fast as possible.
-Keep your equipment as up to date as possible for your level. Low level chars are terrible with outdated equip, but with very up to date equip, you won’t be completely worthless in a fight. A low level char with up to date equipment can have pretty high stats in at least one or two of stat lines. I’ve had over 3700 attack power on level 10 chars in wvw.
Are you a WvW newb that is not max level? If so, join a zerg pack as they will be the ones flipping objectives thus you will gain much needed xp, karma, coin, etc.
Also take traits / skills that are group oriented like giving the pack speed buffs, offensive defensive buffs, etc.

Honestly look for you commander symbol if its out in the field meet up and likely you’ll be ok. I took a level 3 toon to wvw and just ran with the zerg. As long as you have your wits about you you’ll be ok. The key thing is to have fun. While this competitive its not spvp.
Btw your toon all by it self wont do much to the rankings. Honestly there is a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Best to just sit back relax and play without worrying about things like that.
Also what class do you play? You don’t have to be pigeon holed into a specific job but thief roaming is way different than necromancer. And mark necros can be deadly in siege. So your class to a certain extent may help you facilitate your decision.

For starters, mostly just follow the zerg or join a havoc squad and:
- Learn the maps and “shorthand” names of all of the locations.
- Learn the tactics and standard practices.
- Learn what is and is not important/appropriate to say in /team or /map.
The other tasks are also very important, but IMO a look-listen-and-learn approach is the quickest way to get a handle on things. You’ll be much more valuable as a solo yak escort, for example once you’re able to successfully defend the yak, and also correctly report intel based on what you see while escorting.
Everyone hits full damage while on siege.
Your utilities are as good as a lvl 80 (stuns, chill, invis, de/buffs)
You should run with a commander zerg. That’s the best way to get experience.
