crafting
Only if something you desire can only be obtained through crafting, for the most part. There are a few things that are profitable to craft, though. I imagine there is a guide for that, as well.
Good luck.
You can find any crafting guides from 1 to 500 in youtube
Even if you can get ascended gear from fractal, world boss chest and achievement… if you have the mats to craft it instead to get it faster, why not?
As for what you probably will need as a necro
- Tailoring for Light armor
- Artificer for scepter and staff
- Weaponsmith for dagger
- Huntsman for warhorn and torch
It’s better to just pick two in one character, and use another character to pick another two crafting skill.

Getting asscended armor from fractals requires enough ascended items to actually play them at T4 (the other tiers don’t drop ascended armor) because of the Agony Resistance you need. You can get trinkets and backpack without crafting, but weapons and armor are much more difficult to get without raids or T4 fractals. If you do the Tequatl and Triple Trouble event daily, you might get a drop after a few weeks.
Even if you get into T4 Fractals drops somehow, it’s unlikely that you get all 6 armor pieces in a row. I’m fitting out my new Guardian and have 3 chests with coats and 2 with boots in them but no gloves or helmet. It’s my first heavy armor character and I haven’t bothered levelling armor smithing so far. I’ll probably just level the craft and build a helmet and gloves instead of waiting for the right drops.
Maxing a craft takes not much time (I do it in under 2 hours with a booster) and costs maybe 30 to 50 gold, depending on the mats you already have. It gives me the flexibility I want. My first full ascended set is crafted, that gave me access to ascended chests from fractals. After that, I only craft what I didn’t get from drops. Not going to wait weeks for the right drop.
It is my understanding, and someone plz correct me if I’m wrong, that if you don’t raid or do dungeons/fractals that you don’t have to worry about crafting high end gear. Just sell the mats and buy stuff from the TP. Unless you just wanna craft for fun and stuff.
There are Achievements associated with crafting, so if you’re interested in AP, crafting will help.

Yes and No….. The cost efficiency of Ascended gear is inconsistent across the game. Fractals demand them mechanically, and were made specifically for that purpose. But when they added the stat bonus, it had this effect of becoming baseline without actually being baseline for all post-80 content.
The shift to Condi meta also complicated this situation further, since Vipers (a HOT only stat) became popular. Considering the cost of the (HOT) insignias can run between 10-30 gold (due to fine material cost), there is a point where the 50-ish gold cost per armor piece for “best in slot” option starts to make sense. Thats why its recommended HOT stats should be Ascended armor and Trinkets, since the stat itself is nearly half the gold/effort cost to obtain. They’re also very cheap to repurpose in response to changes in game meta, and can move them to another character if that class is more desirable.
If you WvW, Raid, Fractal, or even harder parts of open world, the difference that 5% makes can be notable on your off stats. And with the power compounding in Raid comps, a 5% increase stats can translate to a 10-15% increase in DPS in the right conditions.
The more involved you get with late game content, or just group play in general, Ascended gear is the inevitable conclusion you’ll find yourself in….. either through necessity, or accumulation of wealth.
