Well that depends. How comfortable are you at playing the glassiest possible character?
Im sorry to say you will be shocked cuz ele is top tier dps class in this game and engi mostly focus on condition damg, power build might equal compare to condi but ppl still prefer condi cuz of raid.
Check out this link https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4ft01q/qt_dps_benchmarkstests_for_all_classes/
If u like engi that much it doesnt matter atleast engi still deal more damg than some other classes but require skill to play it right.
but with engi you dont die (up to 4-5 heals in rotation) eles is very sqishy but do more dmg.
Engi is pretty high up on the DPS list if you’re a competent player and can actually pull off a decent rotation. Power and condi are both perfectly viable, although you’ll most likely end up running condi if you want to do raids

I love how people say that ele is the squishiest class in the game, yet it’s one of the best tanks. But then again, those people are usually meta players. Try doing some non-meta builds, and you’ll find that ele can do alot of damage safely.

I agree that ele CAN be decent damage and still keep up, but to do an insane amout of damage then I feel squishy. But my Guild Leader is an ele and is always the last one standing. I guess it is also a matter of what you consider to be high dps.

A staff elementalist have the highest dps in the game and their dps is around 35 k + and with spike damage around 45-47 k (with raid buffs ofc)
How ever a ele in a dungeon or in the open world are ofc not gonna put out those sorts of numbers, but they will still remain the top tier damage.
And for topic starter you might want to read this guide for engineers. It is the best class guide out there. http://www.sheriffsauer.com/
