few questions need answering please :)
OK, so I can’t help you with the ranger and engineer as i never play mine. However, i absolutely love elementalist.
Basically for pvp uses, ele is pretty good as the tanky celestial d/d build has immense regenereation and offers pretty good teamfight. Sceptre/focus is more bursty and harder to play but is really good as well in teamfighting.
Eles all around are pretty good in pvp, however are outclasses by some other classes in teamfight hence you don’t see too many eles on the pro teams. If you want to master a class really well at pvp, I’d played a different class that offers more dps and teamfight. (-Information is referenced from Team Abjured(arguably the strongest gw2 pro pvp team out there))
However, for PVE ele is by far the best class in the game (as well as guardian). There is no question about it. Being able to do a ridiculous amount of dps that is unmatched by other classes, able to stack around 50 seconds of swiftness alone, and able to stack 25 stacks of might on command, as well as offering lots of vulnerability, invulnerability and projectile reflections (if u good enough able to swap weapons while running through the useless parts of pve or dungeons), has a teleport, has the ability to summon an incredibly bulky tank and more….
For advice on learning ele in pve I’d use the staff elementalist build on www.metabattle.com, and watch either DE Keyz’s ele on youtube as well as purple miku on twitch/youtube. There both really good, and you can learn the dps rotation really efficently just by watching. but if you dont want to, metabattle has the dps rotation listed.
realized the hyper link didnt appear.
heres the staff ele pve link i suggest (as it is the best ele build for pve): http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Elementalist_-_Staff
if your trying to figure out PvE ‘meta’ roles for each professions, check out http://gw2dungeons.net/Meta
its a great site for competitive dungeon/fractal running and a great site to figure out what roles each profession plays
Awesome thank you very much for the info on elemebyalist there ! Yeah I did try guardian but I hated the lack of mobility without staff, so I decided against it. What makes them so awesome in pve anyway? Have to admit elemental engineer and ranger are given me endless fun at the moment haha.
Oh forgot to ask with the engineer healing turret it’s a pain in the kitten nal when you have to kite or dodge and run out of the radius… Also just a little curious on how well thieves seem to perform as it’s the only class I haven’t tried as of yet..

They are hard-mode and not for everyone. Leveling is the hardest, but at cap they come into their own, play becomes different compared to leveling. There is usually a spot open for them in most any group, especially if it’s the right build in the right place (e.g. a condi build is not so great in fractals etc).
Yeah I think I’ll leave the thief for now. So far I’m with my engineer , elementalist , ranger and for the last spot I’m thinking of trying out a mesmer, they seem hard to learn but once learnt they seem very very good for solo and group play. Builds seem fun also which is very important.
But yeah still a little rusty on the engineer but getting him to 80 first. I know I’ll get all to 80 eventually but between elementalist ranger and mesmer what do you think is the most fun, easy to get into pve groups and best for solo queueing spvp?
for pve, eles are pretty much always in demand since its hard to not figure out what to do on the very simple staff build, d/f s/f are more complicated and are more rare in complete pug groups
engineer turret is basically, place → overcharge → detonate using toolbelt
it will cleanse 2 conditions in aoe as well as providing a big burst heal, your dodge roll can’t take you out of its field in 1 go, and skills after the initial placement can be done mid dodge roll so with a bit of practice you should be good to heal up on the move
guardian fills the uber defensive type support in pve, it provides projectile defenses, blinds and blocks as well as condition cleansing and some minor heals while doing mid rank damage
if you are curious, you can always head straight to http://dtguilds.com/forum/m/6563292/viewforum/4280860 where DnT keeps all of their builds updated(the same as you would find on metabattle, just at the source)

Detonating your healing turret isn’t a good idea in most situation since it increase the cooldown on your turret, you want to pick your turret up. Without detonating it’s 360hp/s on average, with detonating it’s 318hp/s on average. Of course if you need to a burst of heal right now, detonating is a good option.

- Engineer : They are not part of the meta, but they are pretty good. They have the 3rd best dps of the game and are the best at giving vulnerability. Unfortunatly Warrior, Elementalist, Thief and Guardian can also give vulnerability. Not much, but with together with the right build and Glyph of Storm they can put pretty much all bosses to 25 for a burst without a Engineer. But it usually need the right composition, so in pugs engineer is the safest way to reach max vulnerability. It’s also a jack of all trades master of none. It can stealth if you don’t have a thief, it can might up if you don’t have an Elementalist or a PS Warrior.
- Ranger is in a similar spot as the engineer. It’s not part of the meta, but it can do a great job. It have the 4th best dps of the game and frost spirit and spotter are great party buff (but Warrior is far superior). He can also give good burst of vulnerability. But using the Sword can be a bit tricky since you can’t dodge you need to use your skills to evade.
- PvP is the best way to get tomes of knowledge, but that’s not the best way to level up. Edge of the Mist is the best way or you can do a dungeon and switch to a low character just before the end so the low level get the xp.
- Thief : In PvE they are one of the three best profession with Thief and Elementalist. They have the highest single target dps (but Elementalist beat them in burst with Icebow). They bring a good sustain Vulnerability, have plenty of blinds and stealth allow to shorten some dungeon by a lot.
- Guardian : They are part of the meta, but are not needed everywhere. They are master of keeping the party alive with protection. Blind, Aegis, Reflection, Condition Removal, Protection, etc. They allow your team to gather more mobs together to kill them faster while keeping them above 90% to trigger the scholar damage modifier. When those abilities are needed they are an invaluable party member, but since the Guardian have the 6th dps, when those defensive abilities are not needed, you are better with another profession.
