I have been doing some fractals to get the exotic back slot item. When I look on the vendor though the items don`t have a rune slot on them. So if I did get an exotic back item it would actually be a downgrade because my current green back slot has an exotic jewel in it. Is there another vendor somewhere that has back item with upgrade slots or is it just the ones on the vendor in the fractals?

This one has still no upgrade slot, but it has agony resistance and ascended stats, resulting in a better back then exotics.

You need to upgrade the capacitors to get infusion slots. Upgrade slots will automatically filled as for every ascended trinket. But the basic version is worse than green backs with upgrade slot.

The exotic fractal capacitor bought from the FOTM merchant in fact do NOT have an upgrade slot for a rune. Weird, but it’s been this way since they were released.

The best choice is to get one, and then ascend it via the MF to get ascended stats and an infusion slot.

The only problem with this method is you need 1 vial of condensed mist essence which only drops from fractals and sometimes are pretty hard to come by.

Ok I figured there was probably going to be some long drawn out process involved in this. A question about the mystic forge since I have never used it. If I happened to get my hands on everything I needed to make the combine, does the combine have a chance to fail or is this something that is sure fire to create everytime its done? I personally have stayed away from the forge and don`t have any experience with it.

This is a guaranteed recipe with no RNG involved. If you place the required ingredients into the forge you will get the desired item out.

and 40 Crystals
it will be upgraded from exotic rarity to ascended with an infusion slot?

It will retain its stat constellation/ prefix (well, noticable amount higher (22 → 56 for primary stat), but you cannot re-choose stats, nor its stats will be randomized) and if you use crystals it will recieve an offensive infusion slot.
