Q:
hard time getting started
If you want to be king of PvE, pick Warrior.
Thieves are one of the best sPvP classes (together with elementalist and mesmer) and semi-gods of WvW (culling).
You can spam-1 pretty much anyone to death in less than five seconds with thief.
I’ve been playing since release. Here are my 2cents.
Warriors are one trick ponies, They can do massive dps but are very boring to play
Rangers i’ve also heard are bland, but other rangers say they enjoy their class (they’re not bad, but some say the gameplay is boring).
Necros are the king of AoE and Conditions. Easy to counter however.
Engineers are kinda good, but they are the most challenging class to play
Thiefs are great in PvP. They are hard to level early, and still have some trouble later on because they are squishy
Elementalist right now are really good.
Mesmers sound like the best thing you’d look for. They have a unique play style, but are amazingly good in pvp and pve.
Guardians I think are the current gods of the game. Their class is amazing in all aspects in the. I advise any new players, especially to mmos, to play this class.
If you drop the superlatives, you pretty much have the situation.
Every class is viabl;e, has variations and appeals to different appeals to different personal preferences. So throw out what you know about other games and start something new. :-)
You have 5 character slots; try different classes for about 10 levels so you get a feel for the mechanics. Remember that some classes develop over time (mesmer, thief, elementalist) and these are more difficult to play effectively.
Also try different races. The models, animations, voices and stories vary. You want something yiou can stick with for 80 levels.
Good luck and let us know how we can help.

perhaps i’m just getting frustrated because my mesmer is not this big deal (level 10) so far, i was a paladin back in wow, but the guardian is way too linear for me.
mesmer is by far the hardest class to level, but if you stick with it, its the most interesting class by far (imo)
so it is pretty normal ? what in long term? gets any “easier” after a certain level?

I find that most classes get a lot easier to play at around level 30-50, since you get to fill out most of your slot skills and start making good progress on a trait build by then, as well as get a much clearer idea of how you can play the class.
