First the gaming press is generally about up and coming and new games. E3 just happen, a lot of the gaming news is about new titles and the new consoles. PC gaming in general is sadly relegated to “just another platform”.

Now I read Massively and they had 27 articles exclusively about or mentioning GW2 in the last month (includes their screenshots of the week articles). That is one advantage about ANet’s living world update strategy, always something new the press can write about.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Op, you have to look for info. about it. Christ, I heard bugger all about Borderlands 2 until I re-installed the game and found out there was a new Tiny Tina DLC waiting for me (Season Pass holder).

That said I did get emails from Anet about some of the Living Story thingies.

It’s the same game you quit, very little end game progression has been added.

The progression mechanic that has been added is living world temporary content, and meta chest farming.

Welcome back, have fun.

A lot of people get used to the changes and forget they were changes.

Depends on when you stopped playing but there’s fractals, dungeons were rebalanced. Most professions got huge makeovers and a lot of underpowered professions are finding their way up (although engineers and rangers still have a way to go).

New guild missions, new currencies like laurels, guild commendations. Guild challenges, treks, bounty hunts. New PvP maps, custom arenas, spectator mode.

WvW also got some love, less culling, new WvW character levels with new abilities you can get.

They’re doing living story which every 2 weeks they add a temporary and permanent change to the game, etc.

Since I too got used to most of the changes I forget a lot of changes were changes, so just go in and see for yourself.

Also depends on what you mean by endgame. Guild Wars is still Guild Wars, it has no raids and gear treadmills or that such, but there’s a lot to do at Lv80 – you just can’t expect to play WoW in GW2, they’re different games.

ya.. i played briefly tonight(download finally finished, only took like 6+ hours.)

the reason i quit was definitely not liking my profession(engineer) and coming back… i still see their damage while leveling is subpar still. i expect to play a little bit again tomorrow after i get some work done, and i think ill make a new character.

i never played GW1, so im not familiar with how the end game is supposed to be. it just seems weird that you arnt supposed to be upgrading your gear at max level…

MMO sites publish articles on GW2 almost every two weeks now because of the rapid updates.

They added a new tier of gear past exotics, so if you want to upgrade your gear at max level you can do that now.

If you expect a gear treadmill then leave for good, Arenanet is not interested in those kind of tricks. I know it may seem weird but you have to realize that not all MMOs are supposed to be about getting better gear all day erryday. In GW1, you didn’t have to get new gear or level up past level 20 for the entire life of the game (5+ years, with 4 expansions).

That is a good question FryChikN, and one I cannot honestly answer because I’m big on WvW/PvP. The games has a lot of content as a whole ( I played 1000h+ and still have to get 100% map completion), but if you start taking out chunks because you don’t enjoy them you’ll soon hit a wall of “not enough to do”. That’s not to say you should force yourself, mind you. What did you enjoy doing before you left? Do you have a guild?

Fortunately enough the “Living Story” (monthly updates that will now be released every 2 weeks) keeps the game fresh and while some of the content released has been lacking, it looks like they are ramping up the production rate.

End game progression doesn’t have to be the +5 sword of quaggan killing (I wish) though. The living story could have been an ongoing storyline (if it was left permanent) introducing a compelling story and a dungeon progression with heavy story telling mechanics. That could have been a decent end game.

Instead…gimmicks and weak story elements only tangentially related to each other or the main plot. What could have been Universal Studios theme park is instead the local carnival. (can’t wait for someone to pop on and say how much better local carnivals are than big theme parks…sigh)

This game is basically digging it’s own grave. the rewards system is nonexistant, we’re still waiting on the huge “kitchen sink” ui updates that most games have by now in their development stages, and the imbalance with the classes in pve and pvp has been severely understated for a long time now. (some of these things they are working on but “will it be enough?” I believe is the question)

So some of us have been watching from afar to see what they’ll do next.

Honestly OP, if you have the game, try and play it, don’t belive anything people says on this forum, since opinions are subjectiv. Also official/fansite forums are never good place to find info about the game, they are basically what I call internet cesspool
But let’s throw my opinion, cause why not.
I’m still enjoying this game very much and I’ve been playing since first BWE. This game is not for everyone, even thou Anet tries to cater to wide range of audience. If you want traditional MMO like every other on the market, you won’t be happy with gw.
All that being said, just try the game. NEVER trust other people and their OPINIONS, there are no objective reviews, etc… Kitten Gamespot gave 7,5 to Vampire The Masquarade: Bloodlines, and I think that is the best RPG out there

Interesting, I also quit game long time ago but got itch to try it out lately to see what changed. My personal opinion…
Good:
-New PvE storylines and overall content.
-Still a lot of people outdoors doing stuff.
-Necros seem to be working better, (took them year to fix them “slow clap”)
-Optimization seem to kicked in, all on maximum settings FPS 60.
-WvWvW, no more invisible enemies \o/, apart from perma stealth thieves.

Bad:
-SPvP is hard to access. Hotjoins dominated by small group of spesific classes.
-Class balance, but when it is going to be balanced anyway, Blizzard been cooking that for 9 years and they still not even close.
-No colorblind mod. I CANT SEE THAT STUPID RED CIRCLE UNDER MY TARGET… it sounds silly but it really gimps my gameplay and that was just one thing among others.

Conclusion: Gw2 is still fun and alive, just stay away from PvP.

Opinions differ. A lot of the LS storyline hasn’t really excited me, but I see where they are going and I think it’s the right choice. It’s a lot like following a progressive storyline in a TV show, like the X-Files or the Walking Dead, but without being presented with “every episode from the beginning” marathons – at least so far. But I do believe there is a benefit to watching the stories unfold.

As for permanent/repeatable content they have already stated that they will add more to the LS, the last few chapters have been in development for months and you can’t just change things around at the last minute. Even so, a lot of really good games that have repeatable content – Rift, SW:TOR, TERA, TSW – that have come out recently have not been as successful as their creators would have liked, at least it seems so based on the games going F2P and abandoning the monthly sub model.

So GW2 stands out from the crowd because it doesn’t just stack new dungeons on the old, they are attempting something that doesn’t really exist in MMOs and appealing to the SPRPG crowd by presenting a world that changes over time, an experience that has been largely absent in MMOs, at least in this form.

I admire Anet for taking risks and trying something different, and since it started out as a non-sub game they don’t have to change horses in the middle of the river, so to speak. It seems to be working out better for them than the traditional style of MMO, given that new releases have gone F2P or started out that way, and several planned releases have been delayed or canceled – what do you think the chances are the a game like TESO is being reconfigured for the F2P model or quietly abandoned altogether?

I think the traditional MMO is coming to an end, and Anet is trying to move on to the next stage.

During mlg apparently gw2 had quite a few viewers. Watch the sotg, you’d suprise yourself. Gw2 isn’t dead, it’s just crawling out of the shadows of other mmos that have been out for over a decade and putting up a fight. Can’t say who is winning, because how do you even define a better mmo? Graphics? Gameplay? Player count/sales? If so I’d say anet giving them a run for their money.

Most of games you speak about failed long before gw2 release …

Rift and TOR are approximately a year older than GW2, TERA and TSW approximately the same age. I think we have different perceptions of time because a few months to a year is not “long before” anything except camera exposures and some radioactive half-lives. Unless it is your opinion that they failed during the development stages…

Are you serious?

First off, lots of classes got nerfed? I don’t see how that’s possible since the last update alone buffed every single class out the window. Now you look at a classes’ most powerful build, see it got downgraded slightly and suddenly think the class got nerfed.

That’s not the case, Anet themselves said they wanted to make other builds more viable, they buffed EVERY aspect from every classes while spreading what made one specific build so strong to other builds.

Moving half of the stunbreaks from elementalist cantrips to other skills.

And rangers got the shortbow range reduced (to me that makes perfect sense, I find it weird how it was the same range as a longbow) and some pets deal less damage but every other more lacking part of their other builds got a buff, the longbow is finally usable; finally!

Second; based on PvP format almost no one plays? Are we honestly playing the same game? A few months ago PvP was a ghost town, now I go into sPvP and see so many rooms completely full with people playing, on standard and custom arenas alike.

Even WvW is better with all the latest fixes. It was a very frequent occurrence that one server would get stuck fighting the same two servers for a long long time and would lose hope and wouldn’t play.
Now with the better match ups, servers which never bothered playing are getting back in the game.

Finally; farming CoF is endgame? The people who farm CoF are actually such a minority, I’ve played since the release and I play a LOT and I never farmed CoF. I’ve ran it a couple times just for the sake of wanting to complete every dungeon and never again; yet I have plenty of things to do.

So everyone is entitled to their opinions and even though there’s a lot of opposing opinions in this thread what you said was just so completely uninformed and false that I couldn’t help but speak up.

When did the community get so sour? Seems like the poor guy just wants to know what he has missed and everyone seems to be venting their frustrations with the game on him. I’m not sure if you guys realize it but, in your expression of discontent you are coming off as aggressive. Sorry to hear you are unhappy with how things are now, and you are certainly entitled to it, but realize that GW2 is still pretty young in the grand scheme of MMO longevity, and the last two (albeit temporary) dungeons they released give me a lot of hope for the future of GW2. I know that seems like an empty consolation, but they are learning, and moving in the right direction, maybe it’s time for a break? I took one for a couple months since my group played through most of the content, but now I have a fresh perspective.

I hope you guys can eventually enjoy the game again, because it is a very promising, and overall fun game.

engineer is fun, but they highly depend on kits (wrench, flamethrower, etc)
There are some very easy mode straight forward professions (like warriors, guardians),
then there are very squishy professions that takes time to master (thief, ele, mesmer),
then there’s professions that are hard to use correctly, because on average they’re lower on damage (necro, engineer, ranger).
Though you should judge a profession on whether it feels right for you and not whether or not it’s easy.

engineer

yep there’s your problem.

Don’t just roll a ranger next or you’ll wanna quit again instantly.
Do one of the soldiers instead, use Axes or a Greatsword, be invited to dungeons constantly even though you don’t anything besides hit the 2 button & then and maybe put down a Banner or Reflect shield every now and then … also get much better looking Armor too.

So I have been playing GW2 pretty much exclusively since beta, and I decided to try something else out. Went back into LOTRO (my game before GW2), and downloaded Rift now that it has gone F2P, and I couldn’t enjoy playing either one. Kept wanting to dodge, and to move around without getting error messages that I can’t use that skill while moving. GW2 is not perfect, just as no other game ever has been, but for me it has the best combat system and the least gear grinding of anything I have played.
People complain that there is nothing to do after 80, and not enough new content, and I have to shake my head. Anet releases their new content a bit at a time rather than in massive expansions that they charge for, but there has been at least a full expansion’s worth of new content released so far, and the rate is accelerating. I love GW2, and I like the direction Anet has taken with the Living Story. Also, I am excited that all those Achievement Points will finally be good for something!

Because despite big cheers from commercial reviewers for beeing so revolutionary and breaking with all conventions, they forgot to make a game that is actually fun and engaging to play.

Well it got them the reviews, it just didnt get them the players.

The people are speaking. The question is if anet will realise what they have done wrong.

So those of us who find the game fun and engaging (of which there are many) are lying?

Maybe the game is fun and engaging to a certain player base, and you’re not part of that player base. Because it’s sure as hell fun and engaging to the people I play with.

You’ve been known to have stated that you find fun not getting rewarded for your time spent playing even in the ways that Anet wishes you to play so you’re definitely not typical of the standard mmorpg playerbase trust me.

Honestly, i have not heard CRAP about this game ANYWHERE.

That’s your fault. There have been news on it. I mean, if you’re reading Times Magazine you probably won’t hear much about GWs… Or many games really…

Oh wait….

Crafting, it costs a bit of gold though.
I would recommend guesting to Tarnished Coast and leveling through the human zones. Once you get to midlevel zones, you will definitely notice that there isn’t many people around, but you can usually ask in map chat for someone to level with you.

Oh look, it’s this thread again…

If you didn’t like it before, you probably won’t like it now. Conversely if you liked it before, you will probably still like it. If you want detailed information about classes or content changes, there’s a huge wiki full of information.

Inb4 they move this to the Players helping players subforum along with the other 9001 of these threads.

P.S. I get mildly annoyed with these because it’s sort of an insult in disguise. The tone of message might as well read (in a condescending kittenhole voice) “Hey I was bored and wondering if this pile of dog turds has the capacity to entertain my shallow kitten for 5 minutes. Thought I’d make this thread to give people a place to dump all of their seething bad criticism and garbage.”

you may or may not have problems. why do you have such a mindset, for no reason?

you really wanna know why i quit this game? i quit this game because i was dissatisfied with my engineer profession and didnt want to level anything else. now i am leveling a guardian and i am actually enjoying the game much more. hell im thinking about testing out some other profession just because so many seem fun.

Well yes there are; if you have the money/gold for it. If you level all professions to max you will hit 80 without running around killing mobs. This is the fastest way to 80…

However this costs quite a lot of gold and you still need karma to get the final recipies that takes you from 375 to 400 crafting.

If you however want to level up the normal route then the trick is doing ALL dynamic events you encounter, this is the best way to gain xp and karma while actually playing.

Talk to Aliette Faye (aplogies if I spelled that wrong), apparently there is more to the concept of “reward” than loot. Like an enjoyable game experience that makes you want to come back and do it again.

Regardless, perhaps Anet’s biggest mistake was trying to please the “standard MMORPG playerbase” when the game was not designed for the standard MMORPG playerbase. Of course, they can be forgiven for this considering that at least a million of them showed up to the party, and Anet didn’t want them to go away disappointed.

Unfortunately, no one told Anet that there is no way to stop them from going away disappointed because there is no way to satisfy them.
