Hello. I got my first character to 80 and I still don’t understand how gearing up works in this game. I know I get rewarded currencies when I complete a dungeon that can be spent on buying armor from that specific dungeon. So If I want to get a set from ascalon catacombs I have to do ascalon catacombs over and over again before I get enough to buy armor set? Is it possible to trade currencies, like trading CoF currencies for Arah currencies?

Each dungeon’s “currency” is unique and can only be used to buy gear from that dungeon. There is no way to trade or use other currencies so yes, you have to run AC over and over to get enough to buy that set.

Note they are also used to craft items needed to craft legendary weapons.

So the only way is to grind the same dungeon. I though gw2 was against grinding.
well thanks for reply.

They seem pretty strongly in favor of grinding when it comes to cosmetics (for better or worse). You can get equivalent gear for gold or karma that just doesn’t have those specific looks. In terms of functionality that level of grinding isn’t required.

so the only reward you get from dungeons are cosmetics?

I’d say the only specific, unique reward you get from dungeons is the cosmetics (or potentially a gift needed for a given legendary). The only reason to go for a set of dungeon armor rather than just buying a set of exotic armor (say off the TP) is because you want those specific looks. I would think you’d make enough coin in dungeons to buy a set of generic exotic armor long before you’d earn the tokens needed for a full set of dungeon armor.

Like I said, for better or worse that’s how it is. You can get functional stuff without much grinding. Getting the look you want is what takes up your time thereafter.

Do you know what stat you want on the armour? If so there may be multiple sources for getting it, other than buying it for coins. Examples include WvW tokens, Karma, and I believe there are some stat combos that you can get from more than one dungeon. So depending on what stats you want it is possible that you can get it, in various skins, from a variety of sources and reduce the repetitive grind.

say, you just hit 80 and want to gear yourself up in… say.. berzerker exotic (which is quite popular in pve for power builds).

You can:
1.Do Cof (p1+2 exceedingly easy), CoE (p2+3 rather easy) or Arah (less likely due to its difficulty) repeatedly to get their token
2. Craft it yourself (kinda cheap and easy actually, if you had not neglected your crafting while leveling)
3. Buy the exotic that someone else had crafted off TP (cheap and definitely easy, put in an order instead of buying instantly to save even more gold)
4. Buy them with a bit of coins and your badge of honor from the WvW/EotM merchants (with the new EotM map, badge of honor has never flow this quickly before for the non-dedicated wvwers like myself)
5. Get it with Karma
6. Mystic Forge: combine 4 greens for a yellow, 4 yellow for a exotic, and hope that it makes the one you want
7. Do fractal/pve/wvw/EotM/champ train/mega raid/regular pve and hope for drops (the more magic find% you have, the better it works)

And the best part is, you can do all of the above, and later cheaply transmute your armor/weapon’s to any armor/weapon you like later thanks to the new transmutation system.

So ya, still a bit of grinding, but outside of solo game with editor/cheat mode, no rpg, MMO or not, is exactly without grinding.

I did not realize that exotic Berserker was available for karma. Where you just listing all the ways to get exotic and picked a set that is not available with one of those currencies or do I need to hit the karma vendors again?

Actually I don’t think you can get Berserker with Karma. Soldier yes.

Anyways the wiki is your friend.
