how to lvl up
You get experience points from nearly everything:
- Just fight monsters. (You get experience, but not much.)
- Revive downed/defeated players. They are even marked on your map. (You get experience, but still not much.)
- When you see a dynamic event happening nearby (watch the “New Event” warning on your screen), don’t hesitate to join in. The experience rewards are good, and you also receive karma.
- Perform the task for renown heart merchants. You get a chunk of experience if you complete a task. Talk to scouts to find them. When the task is complete, you can spend karma at the renown heart merchant.
- Buy a gathering axe, mining pick and sickle, and use these to collect ore, wood and plants. The places to gather from are marked on your minimap.
- Talk to master craftsmen in your home city, and learn up to two crafts. You can improve your crafts, and also receive significant experience rewards for this.
- Do your personal story. Follow the green stars to where you should enter the story instance. Each story chapter says which level you should be to safely be able to complete it. If you complete a chapter, you get a big chunk of experience, and an item as well.
This is not one of those MMO’s where the initial 10 levels or so are being gained extremely fast, and then the higher you are the longer it takes to level up. In GW2 the time it takes to level from 7 to 8 is pretty much the same as the time it takes to level from 79 to 80.
As for what to do. Just explore the maps, complete the hearts you encounter, do the dynamic events you stumble upon, gather every resource you find on your travels. All the killing, exploring, harvesting, event finishing, daily achievement completion, give you XP. And if you still find it unsatisfying, start crafting with the resources you gathered, as crafting gives XP also. In the end, you can also jump into WvW, where you can also get decent XP. In fact, if I’m not mistaken (and people can confirm this or not), WvW is quite a good way to gain XP fast.
Go out and explore – exploring (includes doing hearts) nets you a really good amount of exp
In general though: Do yourself a favour and don’t try to get to lvl 80 as quickly as possible. Endgame is not that much different from the rest of the game, so you might as well enjoy the journey
Dynamic events + Dailies is where the fastest leveling is at in my experience. Usually by doing a DE you end completing hearts so its even better.
Metrica Province has a lot of DE packed tightly.
Sounds like you are on the right track. They said leveling would be fast with only needing about 1 or 1.5 hours per level all the way up to 80. In any other game I have ever played especially MMOs the time needed per level starts off fast with the first 10 or so levels only needing a few hours but then each level the time gets exponentially more with 5+ hours per level needed. Do the daily achievements every time you play. Gather crafting nodes you see on the minimap as you do other stuff. And keep up with the personal story should be sufficient to keep the pace. You can also follow a guide for fastest path to 400 for crafting. That will get even more XP from the discoveries. Best to keep track of that as you go so you don’t have to go back to just gather stuff if you wait to begin working on getting to 400. Combine as many XP gaining activities together as possible. If there is a DE nearby a heart then doing the DE will likely also get you credit towards completing the heart. Don’t pass by nodes stop and harvest them. Running through an area to go do something else stop and give someone a quick hand killing something or kill some random things as you run from point A to B. Which will also help get the daily complete since kill variety is likely the last part of get completed unless you make sure to kill a variety of stuff as you play.

Wiki is your friend, and leveling is easy. There’s a giant table on that page, showing everything that gives you experience, and how much you can get from it.
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.
