lvling time
In PvP level doesn’t matter, if you enter the Heart of the Mists (PvP lobby) you’ll be lvl 80 automatically there.
I took about 2 months to get lvl 80 in my 1st character (when the game was released) but nowadays around 50 hours seems to be a reasonable time for a 1st character.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

So about 50 hours in pve with the first character.
About how many hours for the second character?
In pvp the lvl doesnt matter, because you become insta lvl 80.
However gear matters right? You cant do well with just your starting gear upon character creation in pvp right?
Casually, 1-1.5 hours per level once out of the growth spurt when you first create your character. Hardcore without the crafting short cut, I’ve heard 24 hours of game time to get to the cap.
In PvP everyone is level 80 by default with full access to all or nearly all traits and skills as well as choice of gear. PvP tests skill, not gear, they try to balance the play going even as far a making all animations and character size the same.

In PvP and WvW you’ll be level 80 no matter what your PvE level is.
As for how long it takes my first character took me about 7 months and about 200 hours. If it takes longer than that I’ll be amazed. Most people can do it in well under 100 hours, even less if you use tomes of knowledge to speed it up.
But for your first character I recommend taking your time. The game doesn’t really change at level 80 so you’re not missing anything and its a good opportunity to explore and learn the game.

Agreed, this isn’t a “all the good stuff is at the end” kind of MMO. There are bosses spread out across the entire level range and with the game’s automatic down scaling they can be tackled at any time even if you are higher level than that content.

So you have access to everything in pvp once you enter heart of the mist?
Pvp is basically you can try all classes maxed out in abilities, gear etc. without having to go through some gearing or lvling process?

There are a few sigils, runes and amulets that you need to unlock once per account with gold. Everything else is accessible right off the bat.
So basically your profession character choice is a pve choice?
Lvling to 80 can take a while, so choosing a profession to lvl is something you want to do carefully.
However for pvp, you can create any class you want and nearly start right away as a maxed out character?
So you can switch around in pvp as you please. So a character choice doesnt matter much in there right, because you can switch to a different profession if you dislike it.
Correct?
p.s.
Sorry I am still mixing up the words profession and class sometimes.
You still have to pick a profession fist, even for PvP. You just don’t need to level first.

You’re basically right.
You still have to choose a profession for PvP, and you’ll be limited to to that professions skills and traits. You also can’t change profession so to use a different one you’ll have to make a whole new character.
But yes, you can create a brand new character, go to the Heart of the Mists and start playing right away without having to level up or get new equipment first.
But even in PvE you don’t need to worry too much. Levelling is faster than many MMOs and there are ways to speed it up so it’s quicker than the estimates above. So it’s not a huge problem if you do decide you want a different profession.

You say regarding pvp: ‘’You also can’t change profession so to use a different one you’ll have to make a whole new character’’.
Making a whole new character is basically the same as changing professions to a new one right? While keeping your previous character(s) if you have enough character slots.

If you have enough character slots yes.
Like I bought some extra character slots to be able to have every class, so if I played only PvP I could have all my characters at lvl 2 and still be able to PvP equally with any other player with any class I want.

How long does lvling to max lvl roughly take as in hours played?
If you lvl to 80 than you are lvl 80 in both pvp and pve?
Levelling can take varying amounts of time. If you use XP boosters, food and utilitys, you will get to 80 a lot faster than some one who is not. Also older accounts that have quite a few achievement points also have an XP gain buff for the account, as you unlock bonus XP buff as you gain achievement points. Its worth noting you get a Karma, gold and magic find.boost that’s account wide too through gaining achievement points.
So if you have a new account with no achievement points it will take you a lot.longer than some one with say 9000 achievement points.

For first time leveling I would not stress how long it takes. Even after that it is not long even taking the long way around. First character I had it took me a couple of months, was not worried. I bought a new account during one of the $10 sales and took the long way around (no crafting a couple of story dungeons) and it took me about 20 hours spread over 2 weeks.
My first character in 2012 took me roughly 1.5 hours per level, but this was due to exploring the content etc I pretty much ignored my personal story up until 80 which would have sped things up a little if I took part.
Overall took me about two weeks then I quit and returned mid 2013 and been here on and off ever since.
My problem was I was too focused on getting 100% map than I was leveling to 80 so it just felt like a massive grind as a new player, once I got out of that mind frame it became quite enjoyable.
