need to pick up a class to play with thief
I’ve never had trouble getting into dungeon groups on my necro, but I don’t usually try to do Fractals at all. If you want to do high level fractals, then yeah, necro might not be a good choice. Otherwise, I think you’d get by just fine.
Guardian is the second most simple class, after warrior. You do have very, very useful group things (including a great reflect), and you can do decent damage if you trait for damage. Engi can also do great damage, but it’s obviously a different type of playing and a bit harder to get down just because of all the combos and kits you rely on; but it just takes some experimenting to find what works for you.
When it comes to pve, damage is the way to go rather than worrying about defense, honestly. If you’re both just going to be leveling and playing around in pve, it really doesn’t matter if you have two thieves or any specific combination. Play what you think would be fun.
Thanks for the answer mate and I kinda wanted to play a thief too but I doubt that any team will need 2 thieves in one party :p i think i need to choose between guard and mesmer cause 2 assassins will work in roaming too I think :/ but guard is also useful in every game mode.
Ranger rocks…..

A mesmer can certainly be useful. Again, reflects. Also, their portal and timewarp are pretty valuable assets to pve. The main drawback, though, is their lack of speed; they have one speedboost, and it has a bit of a cooldown between uses.
If I had to pick between the two, I’d go with guardian, personally. But either one could be great.
Ele. blast might.
My bf and I played necro thief a while back and we found it an excellent combination. Thief has pretty low survivability (especially without traits) so necro is a brilliant pairing as you can offer minions to tank, you have great survivability yourself and you can even offer a bit of regen if you use staff #2.
For this combo I use staff condi/mm build and my bf used a d/d zerk/assassin type build. Of course he did a lot more damage than me but back then d/d was limited to single target damage- it left me in charge to control any group aggro and knock their health down enough for him to finish them off. I’d assume this kind of set-up would still work but with the benefit of daggers now having cleave (yay for more damage)
I would certainly not suggest using staff in dungeons, but I’ve seen dagger/warhorn and dagger/focus (I think) and they do some brilliant damage. Being a necro shouldn’t hinder you for most dungeon runs unless you specifically go for speed-clear pugs or pugs who demand meta. Arah and high level fractal pugs will be a bit pickier too, but if you run dungeons with a guild group they’ll probably be very accommodating: From my experience guild groups don’t mind what professions a group has as long as there’s a couple of guardians.
Ele and Engi are fun to play too! Ele has excellent damage capabilities no matter what you do, Engi is a bit trickier. BUT… if you want to “master” either and run meta builds, be prepared for a lot of kit swapping/attunement swapping and a long string of keys to press (and keeping an eye on cool-downs). These two professions are much more in demand when it comes to high level fractals, speed-clears etc because of their utility for the group (might and vulnerability). Necro can also offer this, just not to the same extent.
Even though Ele has a low health pool, eles have a lot of tricks up their sleeves when it comes to healing. I have two eles- a celestial staff ele and a zerk s/d ele. My celestial staff ele is probably one of my most survivable characters and still does a brilliant amount of damage. My zerk ele does mountains of damage and is survivable as long as you time your dodges and evades. Glass cannons are expected to be smashed, but that’s why you have other party members to pick you up
Basically just play what you want! If you want to play necro, play it- don’t feel you can’t play this awesome class because it’s not perfect for hard dungeons.

Good day, Halasimir.
If you’re choosing only between – Guard/Engi/Necro – then it would be a good decision to think about Guardian. Why ? among other classes, guardian is able to support both himself and other party members at the same time having a good defensive abilities and high direct or condition damage (according to your play style).
I have all classes (except of ele and ranger) and can say that thief+guardian combo may be very usefull in every dungeon.
You can contact me ingame. Have a nice day.
OP, guardian is your best option for almost all game content and pairing up with any other class or group.
As for damage, a dps traited/built guardian has some of the highest sustained damage output in the game.
Thanks for your opinion fellas especially Crimson Clouds for pointing out pros and cons so deeply
I wish that my girl would like playing computer games as much as you :p too bad she doesn’t like it :/
After summary of the topic I think I’ll level up guard. if anyone would like to share your opinion, be my guest
For duo roaming with a thief, the ranger’s pet is pretty handy. When you stealth out, if there is nothing left to grab aggro then you pop right back into the same situation you stealthed out of.
Guard is a good choice as well, but outside of combat your guard is probably going to suffer a movement hindrance that a ranger won’t have.

^^^This for starters. Guardian is great in almost ever aspect of the game. Do you plan to WvW duo-roam as this pair? If so, Guardian is terrible to combo with a Thief. The second slowest profession (foot races) teamed up with the, absolute fastest/most highly-mobile profession. Also Guardian and Thief lack synergy in other departments. They have very few useful combo field/finishers. They both share blinds for defense. Guardian has burn with 25-50% uptime. Thief (still don’t know what kind) has good access to poison and some ‘situautional’ bleeds. This will lower the overall effectiveness of many good damage traits. This combo also doesn’t have much ‘control’, about 95%+ of which is soft CC.
Guardians defense is wasted on a thief experienced with Stealth. Thief’s stealth isn’t as effective for a Guardian, who has excellent sustained damage (needs to keep hitting), but isn’t to great at heavy burst/‘ambush’ tactics. Thief will be mitigating a ton of damage himself through dodges, evades, teles, blinds, dazes, stealth. This will weaken Guardian’s role in the duo as he is the ‘reigning king’ of damage mitigation, but that doesn’t shine when paired with a ‘lone wolf’ like a Thief.
For PvP/WvW: RANGER, Engi, Mesmer, or Ele (in that order) would be better paired with Thief.
HOWEVER, if your sole intent is to team up for open-world PvE or some dungeons, then Guardian and Thief are literally the backbones of the groups in these modes. (Ironic IMO that two professions that match so terribly for very small PvP skirmishes for the above mentioned reasons, are incredible dungeon teammates for all the same reasons O.o)
Stealth rezzes. Permablind. Permaburning. Aegis. Protection. Projectile management (reflect/absorb). Mob pulls to cluster. Stealth for mob/area skips. Damage scales much higher with other non-profession boons/conditions. Much better use of other players combo fields. Excellent control of Defiant stacks. That’s not all but I’m done typing.
For PvE content Guardian and Thief are an excellent attribute to the team.
Ranger,Warrior, and Ele, as well
Hit me up.

Swap those weapon sets around on your Eles Zerk Staff Ele Drops the Bombs On ‘Em and Celestial S/F Ele is an invincible, destructive ball of MegaCounters and if you’re gonna use one dagger, equip the other and just duke it out
*No offense meant in any of that btw? I’m usually more eloquent with pointers, except after a couple he’s sleep and kids are still high on sugar. How do they do this? We walked around in the 20 degree weather for almost four hours then get to bed at midnight. 6am…running around like they just woke up from a coma. O.o
Tman- I wasn’t really looking for pointers on how I play (I’m very happy with both of my eles right now and how I play them and wouldn’t change them). I was just pointing out that eles can be extremely versatile and you can make them what you want them to be.
I’m pleased you went for guard Halasimir! I would’ve covered it in my initial response but felt that it would be covered by plenty of others (needed to give the other professions some time to shine… guards are OP ;D ). I have 2 level 80 guards right now (more on their way) and I love them equally as much as my eles.
If you’re running around for PvE/exploration I suggest having a staff at hand and stack on staff #3 (every second you stand in the symbol you and your allies get 4 seconds of stackable speedboost). With this (and possibly “Retreat!”) I’m pretty sure you can maintain 33% all the time which covers any mobility issues you’ll have by not having a passive 25% speedboost. Tman has some good points when it comes to WvW (but there’s nothing stopping you from creating another character to match your buddy’s thief for WvW roaming if you want to).
I hope you have great fun on your guardian!
Thanks everyone for feedback and precious advices! I really appreciate it. And yes, I picked a guardian and I think I’ll stay with him for a while for wvw and roaming I’ll follow T man’s advice and will create a ranger
I’ve got 26 mesmer but I think that ranger would be more useful in roaming with thief ;p I’m wide open for future opinions and you feedback guys
tanks for helping me:)
Cheers!
