I am new also, but not very new to MMOs, and I have level to 20 (but im changing professions) I have found that’s very easy to level here. Just go out and kill some stuff suddenly the events will pop up and you’ll be rewarded with exp and money. SO far … you can get what you need (gear) just from doing this and storyline

You can get armor by killing things but I usually buy mine off the trading post. You’ll get a lot of money off monsters you kill so pick up everything. I normally just see everything to a vendor and keep on crafting materials for the trading post.

You do not need a guild or party to do 95% of the content in the game. The only thing that I can think of where you’ll need a party would be for dungeons. This is not saying that parties do not have their uses elsewhere.

I personally start off by going to all of the cities in the starter areas (there’s five) and Lion’s Arch where I’ll find everything for that area. When I mean everything I mean going for map completion by finding all of the vistas, point of interests, and waypoints. I then start in a level 1-15 zone and do the same as the cities but also get the hearts (quests) as well. Once I’m done I go to the next level 1-15 zone and finish it and so forth working my way up to the level 80 zone. This is what a lot of us do but there are many ways to reach level 80.

GW2 does not have quest hubs to level up, There are many ways to level up. You are introduced how to do it right after you make a character, and do your very first event. Find hearts and do what pops up in the menu at the top right of the screen.

Do gathering
Do map completions = Find Points of Intrest, Skill trainers(identified as the blue chevrons all over the map) Find Vista’s

Each of these things give money, and Experience – Money for armor, and expereince.
Participate in World Events, they pop up out of the blue in whatever zone you are in. These will reward, more money for armor, more exprience for leveling, and Karma currency, which you can use to buy things in game, but players most save the Karma for buying level 80 exotic armor.

i would try to meet people. dont be afraid to ask for help in the /yell option, because that’s how i meet most people, through that chat. those people can help you make leveling and everything much safer and easier. try to be in parties of simular lvl people or some people(like myself) like to help lower lvl chars by doing stuff with them. do heart quests a lot, go for map completion, and do all the dynamic events you pass by. ALL. it helps. if you have a good party of about 5 by any chance go into world vs world(if one of those people is experienced in the game and in wvw), even if you are lvl 10 you should go to wvw if you have a good party, as it gives you tremendous exp. hope this helps.

Life is like a mirror, you only get what you put in it.

Hey Eltacoslayer,

first off, welcome to Tyria!!
For leveling, there is just one simple answer: go out and explore! You get exp when you discover the world. You get exp from slaying mobs (you know, the things that wanna kill you ) you get exp from gathering, you get exp from discovering POI (Points of Interest , the little squares on the map), from Vista’s, from doing events, from map completion, from… basicly from everything you do in the game.

Money will come from the same sources, as will armor. Do pick up everything that is dropped. Even if its junk, you can sell it to a merchant for some hard cash. All gather stuff can be directly deposit in your bank from anywhere in the world. Just click the cogwheel on the right top off you inventory display and select deposit.

For the first part off the game i would not recommend using the Trading Post if this is your first char and you are still low on cash. Most needed armor and weapons will drop from slain mobs and you can easily survive on that. Later, when you want specific stuff, browse the TP and you could strike a good deal sometimes.

A guild is not mandatory, but it gives you a bonus (help from other members, some good chatting while playing the game and a good resource for information about almost everything in this game). So check out some guilds or post a thread in the guild section off the forum. You can join more then 1 guild, but you can only represent 1 guild at the time. So you can decide who you will represent whenever you want and switch during game to any other in your list.

Crafting is basicly collecting the right materials, go to the right workstation (you need to “learn” a crafting profession) and check what you can make. Also check out the disovery tab off the crafting panel. It lets you combine different mats so you can learn a new thing to craft. The most exp from crafting comes from the discovery off new items. You can learn all the crafting professions, but you can have only 2 active ones at the time. If you switch to another crafting prof you will keep all the exp from the “unlearned” one and once you switch back, you can continue without any lose.

Hope that this gives you some basic information so you can start playing and having fun. For more detailed info, check out the wiki, there’s tons and tons off info there!

Just to add a couple things to what Noppy said:

- Being a member of a guild isn’t required, being a member of the RIGHT guild is highly recommended and can increase your enjoyment of the game immensely. In addition to what Noppy said, guilds can also activate perks that can help while adventuring; for example, my guild currently has the magic find perk running….which means less junk and more goodies to loot.

- With regards to crafting, keep in mind that not only does creating items and discovering recipes increase your crafting ability, you also gain character experience at the same time, unlike other games where crafting is considered a separate set of levels.

If you’re having problems getting usable armor and weapon drops, don’t forget to check out the heart vendors while you’re running around doing those. Some sell those items for Karma (which you earn in various ways, including completing hearts) and I’ve been finding that the karma armor from a specific area tends to have a specific look.

To get started with crafting (after you acquired the tools you need to gather stuff and, well, gathering stuff), you’ll need to go to one of the big cities (your personal story will quickly take you to your home city), find the crafting area, and talk to the respective NPCs
