hi all, i recently bought the game and i need help choosing class, i don’t need the argument of ´just play what you really want’ because right now i’m between 4 professions, mesmer elementalist thief and necromancer, i’m looking for a decent pve and good pvp class that can go to dungeons and that stuff, my preference is necro but i’ve seen that the class isn’t that good, what would you recommend me to do? thanks

For both contents i will say Mesmer and Ele because they are 2 of 4 hottest classes in dungeon/team play as well as in pvp but they pretty hard to play.

Elementalist if you play it wrong there will be consequences you end up sucked at everything and get you bored to death.

Mesmer is a little bit easier than ele but slow movement speed is their fatal.

Don’t bother Necro and Thief because they are not for pve especially dungeon.

The recommendations people are giving you are based on current professions. When the expansion comes out, it can easily be completely different so take all recommendations with the knowledge they might not be true for much longer.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Elementalist is one of the most fun professions to play, but I wouldn’t recommend it to a newcomer unless you really want to invest time to learn it and not ragequit before level 30, it has a really steep learning curve. The rewards are worth it tho.

True, but it will be quite a while before the expnansion is out, and even then, it’ll need some rebalancing over the first few weeks/months. An expansion tomorrow is no excuse to not have fun today.

My suggestion? Listen to people here, and stick to either Ele or Necro. If the expansion changes things around… well, so what? Just because one class gets better, it doesn’t necessarily means another gets worse. It just means the weaker class gets better, and sometimes a powerful class gets a bit weaker to match the weak ones. In the end, they should be just as good. (still going to be a couple of dozen pages of “they nerfed it!” complaints, though. That never failes, hehe.)

Also, I’m not going into the “just try one”, but if you already have tried one and like it, stick to that.

To play an Ele right takes a LOT of work (button cycling). Just tossing that out there.

I started on my ele….and I have tried every other class since then. Elementalist is my favorite by far still. If you want to start with an ele do not be discouraged. But, I do recommend playing with a friend. The beginning can be a little rough all on your lonesome. Personally, I have always played mage type classes in every MMO I have ever played, so being squish was always a given. Roaming with a friend makes things much easier as you learn.

To survive this world you must be mad as a hatter. Luckily for me, I am positively insane.

Really don’t know where you got that, but Thief is very good… especially for dungeons and fractals. Ele x2 – Thief trios are setting some crazy times right now. And is part of the 5-man meta now.

At the casual/enthusiast tier, thief brings a lot to the table.

As for general PvE, any class is fine. Play what you enjoy the most.

OP: you can’t go wrong with any of your choices… you’ll eventually end up playing them all.

So you’re looking for a good class for Dungeons and PvP.

For dungeons, there are definitely metas to be respected, and some classes are better at it than others.
As for PvP, most classes have their pros and cons and they can all be really good at it, the only differences is the learning curve.

Here is a short breakdown of these classes for those formats.

Dungeons
Elementalist
Elementalists are generally welcome in parties and are part of the dungeon meta. Their DPS is very high, but what is important is their buff abilities (Might, Fury). On the down side they are the squishiest of all and the stacking of might can be difficult to master. They also have a tendency to attract dungeon aggro so be careful!

Mesmer
The Mesmer doesn’t have as much DPS, but brings the best support a party can wish for and can make a good party even better. On the down side, a good Mesmer must be very knowledgeable of the dungeon and their jobs is really to facilitate and make for a smooth run by enhancing the party’s abilities.

Thief
Thief is part of the dungeon meta and has the most DPS of all classes. They can allow a party to skip parts of the dungeon with their stealth abilities and bring blind to the party for more survivability, but they are very squishy and are difficult to master. They are not always welcome in parties because there aren’t many players that can play thief effectively and you might end up dying a lot.

Necromancer
Necros are very resilient and have good DPS. However they are not really usually part of the dungeon meta and can be disliked because of their fear abilities which break the stacking in a dungeon.

PvP
Mesmer
Mesmers are one of the best PvP classes out there. They are resilient enough and their clones allow them to confuse the enemy before finishing them. They also have access to stealth which makes them even more difficult to catch. The learning curve to play Mesmer is somewhat steep, but to really master it requires work and smart thinking.

Thief
Thieves are very strong in PvP because of their access to stealth and good DPS. However they are difficult to master due to their tendency to be glassy and require more dedication. The stealthing requires also a lot of practice to be really good at it, but it’s definitely easy to get away with a thief due to their mobility and stealth. If played with conditions, they can be devastating as well and very hard to catch. If played properly, they can outshine most classes.

Necromancer
Necromancers are really strong in PvP. Their high HP pool and double health bar helps them survive most encounters. In any case, their fear abilities and conditions alone make them fierce opponents. On the down side they don’t have access to stealth and have limited mobility, but the play style is still relatively easy to learn.

Elementalist
Elementalists are very strong in PvP and can be very resilient with their many boons and cc’s. They also have access to good mobility and good DPS. They are somewhat easy to learn, but requires practice to really master. The attunement switching can also be a bit of a steep learning curve.

Conclusion
Going back to your post you were looking for a good PvP/Dungeon Class.
They’re all pretty good at PvP, and most of them are good at Dungeons, but the best fit for you I think would be Elementalist.
They are widely used in dungeons and are very good at PvP. They are also widely used in all the other formats, which allows you to open up your possibilities. It’s a good class to learn the game and maybe not the easiest, but this could also be your main for a very long time.

Pros
• High DPS
• High Mobility
• Easy access to boons
• Easy access to cc’s
• Great support
• Access to long range
• Access to a large variety of skills at all times (attunements)
• Always in demands

Cons
• Lowest HP of all classes
• Attract aggro
• Cannot swap weapons

Hope this helps.
