This has probably been asked a hundred times. Sorry in advance.

I have been coming across chests in the PvE open world which I cannot interact with. They are just there… like a part of the scenery, but without a purpose. No loot. No option to interact/open. Nothing.


These chests are usually guarded by NPCs. In this example pictured below, I found a chest underwater near the Brigantine Isles in Gendarran Fields. It was guarded by two Buccanneer Pirates. After killing the pirates (several times, since they respawn almost instantly) the chest never became lootable.

Am I missing something? I’m starting to feel a little ripped off. lol

There are some chests which are just part of the scenery. One of the jump puzzles in Harathi Hinterlands for example has a lot of chests just inside the entrance, and in Bloodtide Coast there’s a sunkern ship with several chests and none of them are actually objects in the game, just part of the scenery.

You can tell the difference because if you hold down Ctrl+Alt lootable chests will get a little yellow label, but decorative ones won’t.
