Hi! Welcome.

The starting location is based on your race. Profession, well that’s a whole can of worms. Have you played an MMO or RPG before? Do you prefer melee or range? Steel or magic? Nuanced or mindless play style?

Thieves are a little brittle here but I enjoy mine. Has a nice mix of short range and melee attacks.

Human would put you in Queensdale. Just north is the Human city of Divinity’s Reach and from there you can, via the “Lion’s Arch” portal, to a location where you can catch a portal to the other race’s home city and from there to their starting areas as well. Explore those five cities (you can get loads of XP from exploration) and the 5 starting areas and you should find yourself at a nice level in a relatively short time.

Also gathering materials from nodes (mining, gathering plants, chopping down trees) also grant a nice bit of XP as well. Actually just about every activity in the game can generate XP.

Well enjoy. Check out the sticky posts at the top of the board for helpful hints.

I suggest you look at making a guardian or mesmer.

Go guardian if you want to wear heavy armor, protect people and make them love you, but don’t mind not dishing out a ton of damage yourself.

Go mesmer if you want to play a light armor class that provides utility and support (but not healing) for your group.

For an easy class (and people will roll their eyes at “yet another”), go warrior.

For a hard, but rewarding class, go elementalist (groups like them but they are hard to play well).

Groups don’t really love rangers or necromancers right now. They are okay, just not loved.

Thieves are mostly loaners, but in groups people like the stealth they provide.
