I am getting my obsidian shards to finish off a legendary, and I’ve been reading that people are recommending farming the silverwastes. I got a couple questions regarding this. First, has there been any “for science” info on obi shards from the bandit chests? Is there an agreed up drop rate, and does anybody know if the drop rate is modified by magic find?
Secondly, which do you think would be faster, farming chests for the shards directly, or events for karma and crests, and then bying the shards with those currencies?

I started farming SW two weeks ago, I’ve had two full stacks since. You get them during chest farming, I can guarantee you’ll get at least 5 in an hour, and it might be even more than that. Not kidding.

Faster isn’t the only important metric. There’s also boredom. Some people can do 8 hrs of chest farming. I’m lucky if I can avoid narcolepsy after 50 minutes. I far prefer running around doing events with karma buffs, switching to some lowbie FotM or the occasional Tequatl, etc.

Plus, your mileage will vary.

That said, there’s something very satisfying about getting the obbi directly, instead of farming the currency with which to buy it.

tl;dr if you can stand it, farm chests until your mouse dies. Else, farming karma will work out just fine for you, too.

For me chest farming has been pretty good for times where I need to just lax. I like to do it when I take a break from competitive play. WvW/PvP. I just watch a show and farm.

It’s the most efficient way to farm them I’ve seen. I only farm SV casually either during downtime or to switch things up and they start to add up fairly quickly. Buying them with Karma is faster if you were lucky enough to stockpile it before the nerf, but if you didn’t I’d say SV is the way to go. Besides just Obsidian Shards you’ll earn plenty (literally stacks on stacks) of Empyreal Fragments and Dragonite Ore. If you sell/salvage the rest you can still make a pretty good profit and collect some T6 mats which you’ll be needing alot of anyways. It does get monotonous though so I usually take a break after 2-3 full runs. Run events when you run out of crests to buy more keys when you need them.

As for drop rates being affected by MF the wiki says it does:

Magic Find is both an account bonus and a character attribute that increases the chance to receive higher-quality loot from slain foes. With a couple exceptions, it does not affect containers (including champion loot bags), chests, or any other source of loot.1 2 The exceptions are:

Containers received from structured PvP reward tracks.
