Power Levelling Guide (PLG)
Power levelling is comprised of techniques, build characteristics and food selection and is proprietary to the HIVE, as written by Buda, and are considered to be guild trade secrets. While many of these techniques can be used in WVW/Mist, etc, this page focuses on PVE zone mapping as the best process to power level because you get the karma, skill points, zone access, and experience needed to be efficient with your character/class. To power level one should:
1.know the basics of the game (review this URL > /http://dulfy.net/2012/05/02/guild-wars-2-tips-tricks-for-new-players/ covers interfaces and tons of general knowledge stuff everyone should know ).
2.group whenever possible.
3.keep their buffs up at all times.
4.share in the kills/rezzes.
5.use tab targeting.
6.level to ensure you are at least 10 levels above that which you are fighting.
7.participate in events that give you heart credit to complete hearts.

Buff Selections
Every class can use power build recommendations to level 80, with the exception of the Necromancer, which should be a condition build starting around level 30. A power build consists of power as a primary stat for the build; thus, everything you buy should have power on it.
•abilities: at level 30 you begin to get traits. I recommend you use them immediately on whatever looks good to get some benefit. By level 39 you should have read the “Dulfy Class guide” identified on the links page.
•armor (head/shoulders/chest/gloves/pants/boots)should have power as the primary stat, and the following runes (minor level 0+/major 39+/Superior 60+):
•strength
•mesmer
•scholar
•trinket (accessory/rings/amulet)
•ruby (pebble level 0+/nugget 20+/lump 35+/shard 50+/crystal or brilliant 65+/exquisite 80+) should be the primary gem
•weapons should have power-related sigils (minor level 0+/major 39+/Superior 60+):
•bloodlust (put on primary weapon)
•strength

Levelling notes…………………………
Level 0.
•Introduction. After the introductory event for your toon, you will be able to go to a capital city.
•Purchase armor/weapons/trinkets/food/sigils/runes/gems.
•Map your own major city. To Map, means to complete all points of interest, vistas, and way points within the city.
•Obtain gateway hub access in Lyons arch to move between the zones.
•Map the remaining four racial cities, which will bring you about kitten levels.
•Hop between the 1-15 zones attached to each racial cities and map the bottom 15-20% of the zone to ensure you reach level 15.
•Rake Tyria. At level 15 you can start raking every zone (first the 1-15s, then 15-25, etc) and you will be 10 levels ahead of everything you fight all the way to level 80. At 10 levels above, you will seldom die, not have to spend money/time rezzing, and be able to take on more mobs and get through the zones quicker.
Level 10.
•every 10 levels to 80 (i.e., level 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70) upgrade all armor/weapons/trinkets/sigils/runes/gems to ensure they are within 2 levels of 10.
•purchase more/better food.
• Note: when buying stuff at the auction house NEVER SELL INSTANTLY; rather, look at the sale price, click on the lowest price and take a few copper pieces off the price to sell it quick. In doing this you will make hundreds of gold pieces each month at level 80.
•World Bosses. At level 10 you can participate in some of the world boss events. The links to various world boss timers is on our links page. Some information is also provided below.
•Level 10+: Svanir Shaman is found in Wayfarer Foothills port to this WP >[&BMIDAAA=]
•Level 10+: Fire Elemental is found in Metrica Province port to this WP > [&BEcAAAA=]
•Level 10+: Evolved Jungle Wurm is found in Bloodtide Coast port to this WP > [&BKoBAAA=]
•Level 60+:The Shatterer is found in Blazeridge Steppes port to this WP > [&BE4DAAA=]
•Level 60+:Tequatl is found in Sparkfly Fen port to this WP >[&BNABAAA=]
•Level 60+: Modniir Ulgoth is found in Harathi Hinterlands port to this WP > [&BLAAAAA=]
•Level 60+: Golem Mark II is found in Mount Maelstrom port to this WP > [&BNQCAAA=]

Level 15.
•begin rolling through every 1-15 zone.
•continue levelling hitting every 15-25 zone.
•etcetera.

A:

People power level when they want endgame content to play. People power level to play with their friends. People power level to make another 80: I have 29 80s. Power levelling has its place and as you said, the game is great without it. I love the game, and found that these techniques work well. I power-levelled a toon to 80 in 3 days without crafting/wvw/pvp/etc. it is fun to hone your skills and rake through content that once was beleaguering or just long and drawn out and not enjoyed as a newb anymore. For the love of the game, this is just a different approach.

Level 20. Skill points are awarded. Please be very careful here, because skill points are hard to come by. When you spend a skill point it is spent and is not recoverable, whereas Traits can be reset, skill points once spent are gone. When you hit level 80 you will need approximately 200+ skill points for your ascended armor build. If you are thrifty you can save between 150-225 skill points for use in making ascended gear. While you can obtain skill points at level 80 and beyond it takes considerable time. In essence, if you spend your skill points on skills you do not need and are nice to have your ability to make ascended gear will suffer immeasurably. To determine how to spend your skill points wisely, wait til you read the dulfy guild (see level 39).

Level 22. At level 15 you can PVP level. Speak to the guild about how to enter PVP, setup your build, and how to run (not be a noob).

Level 30. You will have access to the Ascolon Catacombs dungeon. While dungeons open up at level 30 and beyond, you should note that they are tough and require a properly geared level 80 presence (3-4 members) to actually complete most dungeons.
•AC/Ascalonian Catacombs level 30 dungeon
•CM/Cudecus Manor level 40 dungeon
•TA/Twilight Arbor level 50 dungeon (aetherblade is a level 80 dungeon within TA)
• SE/Sorrow’s Embrace level 60 dungeon
•CoF/Citadel of Flame level 70 dungeon
•HoW/Honor of the Waves level 76 dungeon
•CoE/Crucible of Eternity level 78 dungeon
•Arah level 80 dungeon

Level 39. Before level 39 you MUST read the Dulfy class guide which can be found in the links section of this website. This guide will show you the traits and their situational uses, the weapons and effective rotations, will discuss playstyles and make provide a few builds. By level 39 you should know your class, every weapon, every skill and

Level 60. At this point you should know your playstyle (i.e., what weapons you like, melee and ranged). Thus, you should be using a build, have the skill points spent on the skills you know you are going to use at 80, and be working on obtaining the traits you want from a trait vender or by earning them. You should also be tweaking your build sigils/runes/stats to support your build.

Level 80. Gearing up, crafting to 500, world boss runs, dungeons, hidden 80 zones, fractals of the mists, WVW/Mist, PVP. Guild policy is that we will help your primary gear up fully. If you have additional toons then you can talk to a guild leader about gearing as well. At level 80 you should be able to do the following at a minumum.
•go to any waypoint in any zone. which will provide access to enter every dungeon
•know where the world bosses show up and have multiple waypoints opened near them so that you can port into the zone quickly to join a group
•know your character class, skills, traits, situational uses, weapon rotations, and optimal food uses for your toon and be able to keep your food buff up and help others do the same.
•learn from others and teach others what you know and are learning.

Beyond Level 80. A glimpse into what being an 80 will allow you to do: (note: items with an asterisk next to them are somewhat available to lower level toons)
•Hidden 80 maps provide great access to unique skins, high-level crafting materials, karma, and fun events (jumping puzzles, boss runs, etc).
•Karma train in Cursed Shore is a great time building karma and killing tons of mobs in large zerg groups.
•Fractals are available to farm pristine fractals (1/day/toon) to purchase ascended rings.
•Dungeons* are available at level and can be run to obtain loot and dungeon tokens. Tokens can be used to get armor/weaponskins from dungeon venders.
•Achievements* can be fun and provide different rewards to include unique skins and peer noteriety.
•Mists/WvW * can provide lots of experience, karma, and gear skins.
•Crafting* ascended, legendary, and numerous unique skins is possible.
•World Boss* runs can provide gold, skins, gear, and materials. Tequatl is a unique boss that drops ascended gear.
•Jumping Puzzles* are an achievement and can provide key materials (such as blade shards from the notsosecret jp), skins, and some money.
•PVP* can be run to obtain crafting materials, rare skins, and other items.
•Karma/Dungeon/Cultural Armor+Weapons* can be obtained by earning dungeon tokens, karma, and gold from various venders around Tyria.

Food and maintenance buffs…..
…are standardized to level 80. The focus of foodbuffs is experience per kill. If you use both then you will get a 25% experience bonus per kill; thus, when you kill 4 creatures you get the experience for a fifth for free, or if you complete four zones you get the experience for a fifth for free.

Food:
•level 5+ candied apples provide 15% XP buff per kill and 3% magic find
•level 10
a bowl of candy corn custard provides health gains every second and +15%XP buff per kill and sells very cheap

Maintenance oil:
•level 0+ rough sharpening stone provides a power buff and 10%XP buff per kill
•level 0
apprentice maintenance oil provides +10%XP buff per kill

Other:
• XP buff can be purchased at the gem store, it provides a +50%XP buff per kill in all map regions
• WXP buff can be purchased at the gem store, it provides a +50%XP buff per kill in World verses World
•Birthday anniversary “experience scrolls” can bump any toon to level 20 in an instant
•There are a number of other buffs (Armor, Strength, Speed, etc) that can help you level quicker by enabling you to do more damage and engage more

Techniques…………
1.Hearts. Every time you enter a heart area hold down the “CONTROL” key to see what you can interact with. Often hearts have things you can interact with to finish a heart by collecting things, which sometimes require turning them in to the questgiver. At other times you can interact with things the cause a creature to pop up, and in these cases one party member can interact and popup the creature then both party members can kill it; then the second party member can interact and respawn the same creature.
2.Zone Events. Zone events that provide heart credit should always be used to complete a heart. If you are passing by a zone event that is outside a heart area, then kill one thing and move on. By killing on creature you will get a mass of XP and other rewards making it worth the time.
3.Preparing for 80? At level 1? Yes! You should be breaking down all blue and white items and selling greens/yellows whenever possible. You will need the materials for crafting and the gold for many things. Crafting Recommendations follow. Ideally you will hit 80 and have your crafts at level 500 shortly thereafter, which will allow you to begin doing daily crafting recipes to support the creation of ascended gear. You cannot craft ascended gear if you dont have the specific craft skill at 500 and enough laurels to buy the recipes. Note that jeweler and chef are not recommended because they have no level 500 benefits. Also, these recommendations are based upon you having one toon. Obviously if you have other toons who have the crafting skills i would not recommend doing them again as there is no benefit.•Elementalist – tailor/artificer (staff/scepter) or tailor/weaponsmith(dagger)
•Engineer – leatherworker/huntsman(rifle)
•Guardian – armorer/weaponsmith(greatsword) or armorer/artificer(staff/sceptor)
•Ranger – leatherworker/huntsman(bow)
•Thief – leatherworker/artificer(pistol) or leatherworker/weaponsmith(dagger)
•Warrior – armorer/weaponsmith(greatsword) or armorer/huntsman(rifle)

4.Saving Gold. Never buy the best equipment from the Auction House, and when equipment is expensive (over 10silverpiece/sp) then use lower level equipment if necessary to save the money. Most of the equipment I buy is a few sp’s at most. Remember you are 10 levels above everything you fight and will need the gold to buy gear when you hit 80. So any extra expenses you have will lessen your ability to be ready at level 80, and in my opinion is a pure waste of money.
5. Dailies. You should always do your daily login reward, and when you have a limited playing time this is the one thing you can do to make the game great because you advance your daily reward level which enables you to maximize the laurels in your inventory. Laurels are the essential ingredient to purchase ascended amulets and recipes for ascended armor and ascended weapons. If you have no Laurels you have no way of making or obtaining 90% of the ascended gear. In addition, doing dailies (see Hero>Achievements>Daily which is three small events) will provide you with materials for ascended gear. Everyone wants ascended gear (armor, weapons, and trinkets) because they are the best in the game. If you are having problems doing your daily contact a guild leader and we will support you. Your daily login is your primary reward, where you will get laurels and stuff, but the other daily activites provide additional rewards and achievement points.
6.Party. This is absolutely the best and fastest way to level. Running in a berserker group, or zerg, means that if you have two people you only need to do half the work to complete most things, and with shared speed buffs and buffs you can get there quicker and be deadlier, with fewer deaths which saves money and time! Grouping helps you get to know people, finish zones in half the time, and learn about other classes all of which will pay huge benefits when you are 80.
•Ranged. Ranged weapons are best when in groups. At level 10 you can equip a second weapon, which should be a group run buff weapon of some type (i.e., a mez gets sword/focus and #4 is a speed buff, a warrior can get sword/warhorn and #5 is a speed run, etc). When using ranged all can hit each target and share the kill; thus, finishing hearts is quicker and you get the true benefit of being in a zerg because you only have to kill a percent of eacj creature.
•Invites. Ensure you put your plan to map a zone in guild chat (i.e., “Mapping Queensdale/1-15Zone<< JOIN ME !!”) to get others to join (see guild policy).
•Share rezzing. When there are 2 people in the party only rez half a person; let the other person get credit by doing the other half.
•Interactions. Often when you are doing a heart there are things to interract with. Determine who goes first, then let the interaction activate a mob you can share/kill. Then the other person does the same. In this way you dont have to move around and do half the work at finishing the heart.
•Tab Targeting. When running always ensure you hit every creature you are fighting: this is done by hitting the tab button, then using your #1 attack skill, then hitting the tab button to select another target, then using your #1 attack skill on it. In a Zerg you want to stack creatures and tag every one before focusing on any to kill. A considerate party member will drag creatures to their teammates that they have tagged, so that the party can kill the creature and get credit. You should rarely focus kill anything; instead share the kills as well. Please note that this guide must be fully understood to optimize your levelling to 80. It has no purpose for characters that are level 80. Level 80 characters should look to other sources of information to attune their traits, runes/armor, weapons/sigils, food, attack rotations and skills.

So many words… Feels a bit all over the place. And I don’t feel like I fully understood it.

TL;DR:

  • If you find a zone overwhelming, you can access other racial starter areas
  • Map completion is boss, many shinies
  • Food is good, extra exp!
  • Feeling lost with your class? Google for a guide or check profession forums.
  • There is a lot more stuff out there. Ask in /map or do research.

Also, necromancers going condition damage for PvE may not be the best idea, but that’s just my personal opinion.

Disclaimer: I main a powermancer, have had it since pre-release, I have all characters at 80, got most of them there before tomes.

I don’t want to be intentionally obtuse, but WHY would you ever need to power level in GW2? Certainly NEVER suggest rushing to 80 as quickly as possible for a new player. Please.

Here are a few tips I have for new players leveling:

  1. Read the RED stickied threads in this forum. LOTS of good stuff there.
  2. Don’t spend anything on equipment unless it is 10-15 levels below your level. (Save it all for 80).
  3. Learn to use the wiki. Note that you can search the wiki in-game by typing:
    /wiki WHATYOUWANTTOSEARCH
    in the chat window.
  4. If you are unsure of something ask in map chat. Ignore idiots that call you a noob and someone will help you.

Another leveling tip is the use of the bonus from the Fireworks from the recent Chinese New Year celebration. They can be used in addition to the food and utility buff and give you an additional 10% bonus on top of ALL xp that you get… that includes opening up new areas, doing hearts, events and even the xp from personal stories (which is a lot). So not just the bonus on kills.

It says in the description that it does not work in wvw, which in my experience is not true. You can not activate them in wvw, but if you activate them while you are still in PvE, it will function while you are in wvw .
