Q:
ppl afk in the middle of nowhere w/ no armor?
I think you’re thinking too much into it. They’re probably players who just had to go do something else outside of the game, and so they just left the characters standing where they were.
As for why they’re naked, it’s because every time you die, your armor gets damaged. After you die seven times, your armor will start breaking (piece by piece) each time you die. When your armor breaks, it disappears from your character model, leaving that part of your body exposed.
I agree with Rose: I know people with babies, ill pets, or aged parents — they will step away from the computer with nary a peep to attend to something urgent and sometimes not return for hours. When they remember, they will [f12], so their character isn’t at risk. However, most of the time, they can’t be bothered.
if they are not afk and are naked it might be that they are mais balm farming aswell, being naked make you do less damage so more can hit the candy corn elementals
Some days ago i watch a player beeing AFK for over 2 hours and beeing constantly
killed by spiders and rezzed by other players .. when i first saw him he had full armor
in the end he was full naked.
I still wonder how people can go AFK for longer in spots with constant respawn
of mobs.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Ah, I did not realize armor disappeared when it broke. I think I have only had broken armor twice since starting a year ago as I generally get the slightest dent fixed at the first opportunity.
I’m a new player and initially I just did not suss out the damaged armour thing. So I was surprised and a bit miffed when I was suddenly naked after dying one time too many. It was quite a relief to find that not only was my armour repairable but also that the repair was free.
I’ve also gone AFK a couple of times in a location I thought was safe returned to find a dead toon.
And imagine having to suddenly go AFK do deal with something in RL and returning to find yourself dead, naked and with your death counter having been incremented a couple of dozen times by well-meaning players!
If I start to rez someone and see that they are missing armor bits I’ll just back away. No sense causing more harm than has already been done. Conversely, if I need to go afk for a bit and don’t want to have to worry about my health while I’m gone I just hit my Hall of Monuments portal stone. Using the stone causes you to travel instantly to the HoM, and when you leave the HoM you are returned to the exact spot that you left. So, no interference with map completes or having to waypoint. Also, if you didn’t play Guild Wars 1 you can still get a portal stone by asking Sarettokk in LA’s Hooligan’s Route for it.

If I see a defeated player lying there I’ll leave them alone unless I was close enough that I know how long they have been lying there.

Yep, ended up without pants once. Should have had emergency pants.

If there is something urgent irl, who cares where they afk, it’s a game afterall.
I’ve had to go AFK unexpectedly quite a few times. And more than once it’s been for something so urgent that the game was instantly the last thing on my mind and I didn’t even think about closing down or going to the HoM or anything like that.
But I’ve also made the mistake of going afk in what I thought was a safe area like an outpost or even a town only for an event to start up around me while I was gone. I keep forgetting that can happen.
I think it doesn’t help that death isn’t all that serious in this game. Sure you’ll have to repair your armor sooner or later but that’s free, and other than that and maybe a bit of silver for a waypoint there’s no problem if you die, so there’s not much of an incentive to avoid it.

More than once I’ve had a piece of armor break while doing something where I can’t easily stop to get it repaired and I’ve had to dig through my inventory for a replacement.

Life is like a box of chocolates so always carry spare pants with you.
With free armor repair the repercussions are a lot less now than when you had to pay to fix armor.
