Reading that thread on unexpected precs raised a question. Some people reported getting them out of loot bags from various places. Is that influenced by the level of the character opening the bag?
I recently leveled up a Mesmer, and I noticed that along the way the loot I got from bags was about the same level as my character at that time, including rares. Since all precursors are level 80, is it possible for a level 50 character to get a precursor from an exotic loot bag?
Also, for clarification, magic find doesn’t have any effect on loot from loot bags, right? Only from actual drops is what I understand.

You have to be 80 to get a precursor from a champ bag. It replaces one of the masterwork slots in the drop table(which is also what happens with the rares) and they are based on the opening char’s lvl. You can however get a champ bag exotic( Cobalt, Stardust, ect……) on any lvl char. Hope that helps.

I’ve personally gotten a named exotic from a Champ Bage with a LVL 40ish Character and I’ve SEEN a guildie get Spark from a Champ Bag while leveling a new character (about 2 months ago).

It is possible i don’t have enough data on sub 80 champ bag opening to make an absolute statement.

I was under the impression that the drop table was like this- masterwork or better equipment/fine crafting mats/ rare chance at champ bag exclusive exotic/ otherstuff. I’m assuming that when people get a precursor from a champ bag its from the “masterwork or better equipment” slot and since that slot is level based then you would have to be 80 to get a precursor from it. However the “rare chance at champ bag exclusive exotic” slot is not level based. So while I’ve only seen champ bag weapons drop from this slot and never a non champ bag weapon on a sub 80 it is possible that a non champ bag exotic can drop from this slot. I’ve just never seen it or seen data on it.

Bottom line is you have a better chance at an exotic item and thus a precursor on an 80, it’s still a ridiculously small chance so i wouldn’t really take it into consideration when deciding to open your bags.

Edit: also bag rarity is another factor wiki says only rare-exotic bags can drop exotics i think.

There are only a couple of instances where a lowbie (as in below level 68 or so) can get an exotic drop:

1. From specific boss/world events. Example: Shadow Behemoth drops a unique item, Final Rest, which can drop for any level characters. There are similar drops for many other world bosses.

2. Champion Bag Exclusive exotics. These will only drop from champion loot bags (of any rarity), and there are only specific ones that drop. Lord Taeres Shadow, Arc, Bonetti’s Rapier, and Entropy are examples of that group of exotics.

3. During special events, such as the initial Southsun karka event where people were scaled up to level 80 and got exotics from the reward chest.

As far as I know you cannot get an exotic drop outside of those examples. So, a lowbie could not get a precursor as a drop. So, if you open a champion bag on a level 50 character, you’ll have a shot at getting the Champ Bag Exclusive weapons. But the rest of the gear you receive will be at your level or close to your level.
