You may be over thinking it.
You don’t need to fully complete the new maps for anything unless you want a new HoT legendary weapon or still need hero points for your elite spec. If the latter, you can use the LFG usually during prime time to find a hero point train. Those are free groups of people running around the map complete the hero challenges. If you consistently can’t find a train during your play time, feel free to add me and I’ll guide you through, or check out dulfy.net. You can fully unlock an elite spec using mostly channels or soloable hero challenges.
If you just want someone to play with, I’ve found just saying in map chat “anyone doing map completion” or something to that effect will almost always get you a buddy.
As far as currencies, just ignore them unless you want to buy something specific.
I’m having the same problem actually when firstly starting the HoT few months ago, but it’s very easy actually.
I can’t help right now, but here are some tips:
First thing to do is maybe to unlock all the map, wait for an HP Train that are started from Verdant Brink (The first HoT map).
Usually while running the train, you will also encounter a few mastery insight, you will unlock all map by doing it (Train usually go from VB -> AB -> TD -> TD Waypoint right before DS)
For meta, you can go to https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Event_timers or download an android app for checking the meta event time.
Living World:
Currency in LW area is mostly only used for ascended trinkets / nodes
People will usually go in map chat for “blabla pre / event started”, you can ask for the Waypoint link.
The rest is just go along with zerg wherever they go as you learn what to do
Hope it helps

ah thank you guys, will do! i definitely need to get the mastery points, i was assuming hot content was a prereq for the new pof content incoming… glad that isnt the case.

There is an easy way to track down mastery points – works in core tyria too. Create an account on gw2efficiency.com, plug your API key into that account (instructions are available there), go to the Account section, then to Achievements. Click on the link to only show mastery points. Then start datamining all the things you can do to earn your mastery points. Combine that with help from dulfy.net to find some of those items (like the chests ) and you’re golden. Plus you’ll find tons of things to do just for regular achievement points. I’ve been playing for ~19 months and when I got bored, I started looking at things I could do for achievement points and wound up finding tons of things to keep me busy – and get me back into playing the game instead of just farming mats for the guild hall.

now I’m working on verdant brink area. Very tedious
I will check out the site you suggested. one for the biggest frustrating factors is finding specific areas on map that may be above or below you. drives me crazy lol
