sell vs salvage
Most rares have a buy order close to the price of an ecto from what I’ve found, so its never really seemed like a winning proposition to gamble on the odds of NOT getting an ecto.

Have had the exact opposite impression. I gamble because you may get more than 1 ecto. You also get a sigil out of it for 2-4 s more + other mats (which may equal another silver or two).
I’d say if it’s 30s+ for the rare, sell it. If it’s less than that, salvage. My own personal system, and not calculated mathematically.
I check the price on the trading post. Very rarely is it worth listing them to me. Usually I salvage them, save the ectos and save the crafting materials and sell the whatever else I get from it (sigils, etc) on the trading post.

I hadn’t thought of it like that before. That sounds like a better system if the odds are good of getting multiple ectos from a master kit. Thank you.
Whenever I salvage (usually save up 25-30), I always have more ectos than items, even using master salv. Last batch I salvaged 30 and received 40 + runes/sigils and mats. If the rare is worth ~50 then it may be worth selling.
I guess what Im really asking is has anyone taken the time to chart out their salvages and see how many ectos per rare you get because I could figure the rest from there
I think in the long run it will work out even, rares salvaged into no ecto’s seems to be happening more often these days.
Its personal preference though, if you need them for crafting ect or are just waiting for a rainy day when ecto’s really spike in price then salvage away!

I just salvage them all really. Not interested that much in gold, that trickles in. But ecto … that’s something I need a lot of.

no one has, because there would be little point in charting a completely random occurrence. Ecto drops are RNG, and that means luck.
Typically I salvage everything green or under, golds I sell on TP unless its high level (76+) and then master salvage for ecto / upgrades. Anything exotic, if I cannot use it, gets sold on the TP if the price is higher than ecto. Any named exotic never gets salvaged. Its either sold on TP at top dollar or soulbound.
My materials storage is full and I have no shortage of coin. Been working quite well for me.
If it’s money that you want, and not ectos, I would still salvage, as in my eyes, all items that can be sold on the TP may as well be equal to money. I pretty much salvage rares no matter what. Even though I may not always get ectos, the times that I do get ectos make up for it.

based on someone else’s results from 800 total salvages, Mystic and Master yield 0.9 ecto per level 68+ rare, and Black Lioin yields 1.25 ecto per level 68+ rare.
Master SK costs 0.6144s per salvage
at 2.4g/100gems, BLSK costs 28.8s per salvage
ectos currently sell for about 25s each
At these rates, MSK will give an approximate profit of 21.1s per rare (BLSK gives 2.45s)
when you sell that ecto, you get 17.9s
so unless you can get rares for less than 17.9s, you’re losing money
then there’s the socket. rares tend to be socketed with major runes/sigils, which I find are worth about 4s. add that to the 21.1s, then subtract TP tax again for a total return of 21.3s
Personally, I salvage most rares I get, unless they sell for more than like 35s. I find that a large percent of the time it won’t sell. above that point has such big profits that it offsets any potential relisting fees.

with rares and higher salvaging is always a good fall back, you may or may not get an ecto but in the long run you can end up with same amount (if not more) ecto’s you then have the runes that sell for at least 2-4 s and some higher tier mats that can either be sold for a bit more coin or crafted into more stuff to sell.
Of course once your eyeing end game gear any chance for ecto’s will be a blessing as you need thousands of the buggers to gear up
