How do I separate the items when I want to mail only some 9f the items to my friend? I always had to give all of my supplies to my friend and had to get it back after he was done using only wat he needed

Left click on the item and then drag it to another open spot while holding down alt key and let go. I have no idea why it is so awkward or not explained well.
