some help picking a class
To be honest i read your post and the first thing came to my mind is this game probably not for you.
Your playstyle is very very casual and if Ranger/War/Guard can’t fit you no class can because those 3 classes are the best for casual/easy mode players.
So here is my opinion
Warrior very straight forward class very boring but ppl love it becuz offensive support with phalanx trait and pure dps trait in team play > Solo don’t even bother this class will end up bored to death.
Guardian – is a most well balance class in game and you just use the class for world boss ..this is so wrong but like warrior guard bring massive support to team play > Solo like you….meh won’t get any better than war.
Ranger – enough talk because this seem the best class for you so far
Ele -best class in team play but don’t even bother this class if you are an easy mode player won’t get better at 80 anyway if you already sucked at it.
Necromancer – PvP monster never ever gonna fit your playstyle.
Mesmer – fun and not the same as ele because clone can hold aggro pretty well and can control the battle field better than any class ( of course if you know what you doing ) but they are slow slow slow a nightmare for map completion.
Thief – like Necro but more than that thief is not for easy mode.
Engineer – yeah you were right engi by far is the hardest class to master and the reward is worth it when you mastered this class but again solo/easy mode….nuff said.
With the Ele, I mean this in the kindest of ways but…learn to play. Seriously, learn. Classes like Ele and Mesmer are tough at first because they’re so squishy, and tend to have really complicated mechanics which you need to know or else you’re gonna die. You rely upon your fancy skills, not your raw health or armor to stay alive. I had no trouble getting one up to lvl 32 because I kept moving, prevented enemies from getting near me, and used my defensive skills carefully(quit, though, since its just kinda boring for me).
I’m learning the importance of this myself as I’ve decided to restart a mesmer. I’d gotten one to 30 before but gave up because the entire time I just kept dying. As I’m rounding lvl 23, though, I’m finding it not nearly as hard as before. Sure, there are problems and groups are a serious threat, but it’s not constant like it was before where just a surprise add would kill me. Why? Because before I wasn’t using sword 2 as the evasive skill that it is, because I didn’t realize the usefulness of OH sword, I ignored Mantras, I didn’t realize that opening with a phantasm is a Great idea to TKD the heat off my for awhile, the list goes on. It takes more effort than just hopping on my old reliable Ranger who can nearly faceroll a Mordrem Terragriff in SWs. Especially with te wonderful ‘NPE’.
If you think you’d enjoy Ele, just stick with it, go over the skills, and maybe read a few guides. Get in game, make sure your gear’s up to date, and practice.

The ele was my first char and is still my main.
Of course, it may be a bit hard at the start, especially when you’re used to a, lets say, warrior. However, when you’re exploring easier areas first (cities, starter areas and so on), your char’s level will easily outrun the area’s level. If you keep your gear up to date and maybe take a few more defensive armor stats, you shouldn’t get in much trouble.
Now that I’m full ascended zerk with staff and all possible offensive stats/traits, I don’t have much problems. Sure I’m squishy, but I can AoE a whole bunch of mobs before they reach me.
It may be a hard to learn class, but it surely is the most rewarding one.
Thief – world bosses really only viable thing was the dual pistols. Not really thiefy
p/p?? by far the weakest set that very few use other than to look sort of cool. World bosses you generally use SB, then melee down the vet minions if there are any. Harder, better, faster, stronger. Just substitute “thief” for “assassin” and there you go.
