for me works best when I level one char to 80 to get fully familiar with the game (mechanics, encounters, rewards…) after that leveling alt will be much more faster

For starters, you have to stop creating and playing alts. Just pick one you’re having fun with (why not the warrior, or the guardian), and stick to it. I started playing mi-October, and my first character hit 80 last night (a Sylvari Elementalist). What I did, basically, was map completion. I went from one zone to the next, doing all hearts, all vistas, all points of interests. I also try to do the daily every day. I craft. That’s pretty much it. I did the story also, but by the time I hit 80, my story was around 48, no further. Also, try to hunt in groups, do events, that makes it more fun.
Good luck!

I like what Eleima said at the end there. Grouping up with people really changes the game a lot. It feels less like a task or a chore when you are out with friends, bragging about that epic fight against the Champion Risen Giant in Orr, or do you remember that day you and that random Guardian tried to complete the Caledon forest map together when a Giant Troll tried to face-stomp you?

I’ve already created two level 80’s (both necromancers!) and I have found that the leveling process just goes that much faster when you are exploring Tyria with a buddy, or several! You completely forget about reaching 80 and just as important – you learn a lot more about your character. You realize that you work perfectly well with a Mesmer, or that perhaps when you are grouped with a thief you have to use different skills.

In my opinion, the higher level you become the more fun the game is – and the REAL fun starts at 80! Give it a go and good luck!

I had this problem myself, but have now actually managed to get a character to 80. For me it was mostly a matter of finding a profession I really enjoyed (the thief). Dungeons are also a great way to level; lots of experience and some nice loot I kind of skipped the world PvE during level 40-70, because I did dungeons, WvW and personal story ^^

It really depends what you want to do. Unfortunately, you’re not really going to find that out until you hit 80 and start doing those things.

I had to make 4 lvl 80s before I finally said “Ah-HA! This is my main” which is a mesmer.

I went with mesmer because they are all-around accepted everything. I rock it in sPvP, they are a wanted class in dungeons, I bring amazing utilities for my small group or zerg in WvW. They have a pretty high skill cap and lots of viable builds and ways to play.

If you’re interested in WvW, I’d recommend youtubing every class with “WvW” next to it to watch some playstyles.

If you’re interested in dungeons, warrior, guardians, and mesmers are widely excepted. Thieves and eles are also excepted, however I think necros, rangers, and engineers aren’t very sought after. (Not saying I agree with this, just the way it seems to be – PUG wise).

RIP in peace Robert

Well the method is pretty much to make a character you like and then keep playing them instead of deleting and starting over.

So the question should really be what makes you NOT stick with a character? What makes you think you want to scrap them and start over? Do you get bored? Does something about the profession or playstyle annoy you? Do you not like the story?

I did keep deleting and remaking some of my characters because I kept changing my mind on what story or other options I wanted, but for me it was just a matter of getting the character right. Once I was happy I kept them and I plan to get them all to 80 eventually (and keep them after that).

Hey Mnoster,

I have only recently started playing but I had the exact same problem – I just could not decide what I wanted to play. I leveled a Guardian to 24 and then rolled a Ranger. I leveled the Ranger to about the same mark.

Hitting this point combined with a bit more forum reading and looking ahead. What I read – and at the risk of inducing rants, I want to emphasise ‘what I read’ – was that there are some niggles with Rangers in dungeons (read the ranger forum for more info). At this point I thought “Well, I want to check some of these dungeons out but I also want to maintain the reasons I started playing this game – personal enjoyment” I don’t want to be moaning about my class not working and hell, I don’t even really want to play a Ranger – I kind of defaulted to that from my WoW hunter days (I see now that this is a poor comparison. In fact, you can’t compare WoW and GW2).

Then it struck me. I’m playing this game for me. I was playing WoW quite a bit but stopped when it became all about having to be competitive in order to play the endgame content. It stopped being fun. It stopped being a game for me and my enjoyment.

Bearing this in mind, I reassessed what I wanted from the game. I wanted to play a [relatively] in your face character that required a bit more thoughtful gameplay and did more than just p3wp3wzerg (which GW2 is not about).

This theory made me settle on a Guardian. But hang on, I already had a Guardian I got bored with… OK, so why did I get bored? I hit level 24 and started looking ahead at skills etc. I didn’t see anything in there that made me go “Awwww yeah I need to hit level xx so I can get that awesome skill” This led me to reading the Guardian forums and lo and behold, people describing the specs and roles they fulfil are exactly those of what I wanted to do. Front line versatile support.

This gave me the impetus to get back to the Guardian. Personally, I don’t think it is a particularly flashy and explosive character to play in solo PvE. This made me change the way I approach it. I started doing the heart missions while I was waiting for events to happen. The second I saw one pop up on the map, I was straight to the waypoint joining in the fight.

I found this to be such a quick way of leveling – even if I had already done an event 5 levels ago. It gave the gameplay some pace, some urgency. It also helped develop my understanding of my profession. Whenever I hit a new area now, I run around grabbing waypoints, uncovering the map. This lets me know when events are up and an access route to them. It makes the levels fly by too which is nice.

TL;DR? Here it is: ask yourself what kind of character you want to play. Tough guy? Cunning little devil? Magic dabbler? There is a profession for you.

You can even tailor your profession choice so it is unique to you via the ample weapon combinations so you can truly make the character you want.

Base your character on what you want. Once you play your character a little more, this will develop and you will really get to grips with it.

This is what did it for me. I hope this helps – I certainly feel I can relate to your situation.
