understanding traits and specialisation
First of all: by the time you’re lvl 80 you will have points enough to unlock all core skills and specialisations, so there are no wrong ways to spend the points you get!
Second: Try out different skills and traits as you level, to figure out which you like and understand when each is useful.
I know how it feels dude, was in your position when I started. Then I realized how fast levelling is and that you get more than enough points to unlock the skills soon, and that by level 80, you have enough points for all of them just by levelling (except elite). Take a look at interactive maps in the wiki and go for hero point challenges to speed up the process, you will stumble over them anyway. But don’t worry at all about picking the “best” skills for your level, it makes not much different before you get to 80. Read their description and pick those that sound like fun.
for ranger I would go either marksman for longbow usage or beastmastery to make your pet a beast
Thank you for the replies and I’ll just carry on as I am then just picking what I think is needed is it also worth regularly switching all the skills around or just sticking with some that I find works
When I level up a new toon, I usually pick one set of utility skills, signets for example, and just leave them until I’ve unlocked all traits. That way I can play with different traits along the way, swapping them to fit whichever weapon I use.
Of course, veterans have the advantage of familiarity, so I suppose if you are more interested in trying out the different utility skills, you could do the opposite and unlock a single “generic” trait line and then unlock different skill sets to play with.
If you go that route, check the wiki to see which levels additional trait lines become available for use, so you know when you need to start unlocking the next set.
As other people have said you can’t really get it wrong because eventually you’ll have more than enough points to unlock everything.
Personally I focus on unlocking a small selection of skills which seem useful first, then once I can use traits I pick a trait line which sounds good and focus on getting that fully unlocked – on the basis that I can use the whole trait line together whereas any new skills I unlock require swapping out one I already have.
I tend to leave the elite skills until last and just use the racial elites, because they’re good enough while you’re levelling but you probably won’t use them much once you reach level 80, so it’s fun to use them while you can.
Edit: Oh, it’s definitely worth experimenting with different traits and skills. You might find that something which didn’t sound that great actually works really well, but also it’s just helpful to familiarise yourself with the options you have available. Some skills (and traits) are highly situational – most of the time they’re not worth taking but it’s good to remember they exist so you can swap to them when you need them.

For Ranger, spend your points on unlocking “We heal as one” – it’s probably the best heal for both you and your pet in the game. For Guardian, I’d split it between signets and spirit weapons – early on the pet-like mechanic of the spirit weapon can give you an edge, and the signets are generally decent. I run a guardian for key runs, and normally get the first couple of signets and then the spirit sword thingy. (I also have a full level 80 Guard/Dragon Hunter that is my scribe, and still regularly run one of the signets on him).
To reinforce what others are saying…. leveling in the game is pretty low stakes,since buildcraft and traits don’t become important until you’re around level 65, and can unlock enough stuff to run proper combinations.
As a rule of thumb for nearly all classes, signets are consistently powerful/useful at lower levels, and you should looking at either a distinctly offensive or defensive trait line to start with. This won’t be apparent to most new players, but the core traits are usually broken into 5 themes….. Class Mechanic, Power damage, Condi damage, Support, and Defense.
For Guardians, in the above order, its Virtues, Zeal, Radiance, Honor and Valor. Guards are easy to trait for, since all their traits have secondary support benefits. Bread and Butter for leveling is going to be Greatsword for power builds, using Zeal and Valor to increase attack power and extra condi cleanse respectively.
For Rangers its far more mixed in terms of themes. Beast Master = Class mechanic, Marksman = Ranged Damage, Skirmish = Melee/Mobility, Wilderness survival = Condi damage/clear, Nature Magic = Defense/Support. Rangers are pretty hard to kill given the large number of personal defense skills, and down skill 3 being an extremely powerful revive. You can also command your pet using F1/2/3/4 commands while downed….. not many people know this, and it can come in handy.
