im lvl 80 and i dont know what im supposed to be salvaging.

I don’t think there’s any right (or wrong) way to do it but here’s what I do (after checking whether I can use the item/s):

Exotics – Always sell, unless I happen to need Dark Matter.
Rare – Salvage if I need ectoplasm, sell if not.
Masterwork, Fine & Common – Sell on the TP if I can, salvage if not.

I think you’ll always get more money for selling crafting materials (on the TP) than for selling equipment to merchants, so it’s better to salvage it if you can’t use it or sell it on the TP.

In some cases it might be more profitable to salvage it than sell it on the TP even if people are paying more than the minimum, but I can’t be bothered keeping track of that.

green or lower I just salvage with copper o matic or equivalent
rares I hit O, check the market price. If it’s more than ecto, sell on TP.
Otherwise salvage with a silver o matic or equivalent
Exotics I check the market price. If it’s worth anything, I’ll sell it otherwise I salvage it for ecto with a black lion kit.

This is just what I do personally:

Cloth and leather greens/blues – Salvage
All other greens/blues – Vendor
Rares over level 68 – Sell on the TP IF the sell price is higher than the current cost of a glob of ectoplasm; otherwise, salvage with a Master/Mystic/Silver-fed kit
Exotics – Check the sell price on the TP AND check the rune/sigil of the item’s sell price; if the rune/sigil goes for more than the whole item, salvage with a black lion kit, sell the rune and any ectos; if the whole item goes for more than the sigil/rune AND sells for more than 2g, I sell the item; if the item goes for less than 2g and has a crappy upgrade, I salvage.

For me, it’s:

• Exotics: sell, unless the sigil/rune is worth “close” to the same (salvage with BL kit, if true).
• Rare armor: salvage with mystic|master’s kit
• Rare weapons: sell if worth more than 28s (~80% the price of ecto); otherwise mystic|master’s salvage.
• Masterwork or below: salvage w/basic (optional: forge weapons for chance of rares, only if you can afford to store weapons)

As a simpler rule of thumb until you have time/inclination to get more nuanced:

• Exotic: sell
• Rare: salvage with master’s|mystic kit
• Masterwork/below: salvage with basic

I salvage and bank it all. Just depends on what the item is as to what type of salvage kit I’ll use. Saving the mystic salvage kit for the good stuff and the black lion salvage kit for the omg really good stuff.
Then at some point I go through my bank and see whether to sell or keep.

The drop rates are so low on those that I doubt anyone has gotten them without either buying several off the TP or having so much money that they might as well have done that, that they can afford to salvage the many ascended items of each type.
