what does magic find do for me in gw2?

Basically, Magic Find improves the odds that the loot you get from enemies will be of higher quality. For example, higher Magic Find might mean a fine (blue) item will be masterwork (green) instead, etc.
It affects loot from drops, and sPvP reward chests — but not other containers like champ bags. I don’t believe it makes more items drop, either.

No it doesn’t make more items drop.
Basically every time you kill an enemy the game goes through a number of checks to determine what you’ll get:
1) Do you get loot at all?
2) What type of item is it?
3) What rarity?
4) What individual item?
I assume 1 is an RNG roll for a yes/no answer or possibly the number of items. 2 will be determined by the enemies loot table – a list of all the items they can drop. 3 and 4 are determined by sub-tables (or subset of the same table, depending on formatting).
Magic Find affects step 3 by giving you an increased chance of getting a rare item.
So for example the game determines you will get loot, it’s going to be an axe and it could be white, blue or green. The higher your magic find is the better your chance of getting a green axe. Then the game will determine which green axe you get (what stats, sigil etc. it has).
Disclaimer: I have no idea if the process described above is exactly how the game does it, but I’m pretty sure it’s the right steps and outcome(s), just not sure of the order.

Ppl already answer your first question well. For the second question.
Yes you can make money out of magic find. From my personal experience, i have a lot more rare since I have a bunch of MF on me than before. Ectos accumulate way faster, but also tier 6 materials.
Note that Magic Find only affects the loot rolls from slain enemies (and for PvP chests). It does not affect results from salvaging, the Mystic Forge, loot bags or ground chests (such as the ones you get from killing World Bosses).
As such, Magic Find will benefit you the most if you do a lot of farming or general PvE slaughter in the open world. If you make your money primarily through Mystic Forging, dungeon running (which often involves skipping lots of enemies), world boss trains, or harvesting, MF will not really give you much benefit.
Ask not what magic find can do for you, but what you can do for magic find!
