why do so many play wvw
because lots of people like pvp, plus later on theres not much else to do.
For me personally, I have played all the PvE in the game. Most of the “dynamic events” I have done hundreds of times and just refined it down to a “fastest process”. This to me isn’t mentally stimulating. Players give me a random element to gameplay that PvE does not. PvE could keep me entertained if they constantly provided new content, but Anet seems clear they would rather people grinded the same content thousands of times rather than provide new and engaging content.
I still PvE because WvW is not rewarding enough. I need to farm PvE to fund my WvW.

That hit the nail on the head.
PvE content is slow. Look at how slow this Fire and Ice content is moving. The pacing is horrid. But Anet needs that time. It’s just sad that the new content coming (and the old content that is still bugged) is not enough to keep things going.
In the open world, there are not enough meta-events and regular events can go untriggered as you walk through a zone. Just not much to engage the player unless moving into pvp of some sort.
WvW is the end game. Sadly, it’s really boring. Lots of building castles and yak guarding. Occasional battles.

hah if only there was actual castle building, would be much better.
There are times when WvW gets really fast paced and intense, and through all of the skill lag and culling issues, there’s the gleam of a genuinely enjoyable game mode that can keep you glued to the screen for hours.
Personally, i’m part of a large WvW guild on Jade Quarry, the main thing that makes WvW interesting is the organization required. being able to lock down an entire map takes a different kind of skill than anything else in the game, it takes dedication and coordination that just doesn’t exist in other modes.
There’s really 2 reasons why people go into WvW, the first is that people enjoy feeling like a part of something bigger, and with the way this game is set up, that isn’t really possible anywhere else. The other is that some people just enjoy the straight up PvP side of things, and the straight up sPvP mode feels too sterile and not interesting enough.
There’s many reasons, but i would suggest trying it, and trying to get some organization with other people. If the concept just doesn’t float your boat, that’s entirely fine, much of the community of this game feel the same way.
While I can’t play PvP well at all, one on one, WvW lets me be part of a group where my lack of lightning fast reflexes or superior hardware/gaming controls still lets me participate in it. Also some of the goals are easier to achieve for someone with my lack of skills. I can take out a single vet guard at a crossroad myself. I and one other can easily take control of a supply camp guarded by vet npcs. I can contribute to my world’s score without being a BiS/Redbull fueled twitch monkey .
RIP City of Heroes
The in game WvW rewards aren’t great and are not the draw. On a good day where we are farming zerg after zerg (thanks ICoa) with the fixed drop rate I still wont get over 1-2g/hour and its not consistent. I do get good karma but I assume you can do that in PvE easily too. Before the loot upgrade (march patch) in WvW I normally just barley broke even gold wise. In PvE you should be 3-8g/hour depending on your farm.
The real draw and the reason I go back day after day is the amazing group play. There is nothing like running 60 man guild groups preforming precise coordinated maneuvers. Its not just player vs player there are highly skilled team-fights. There is a social aspect that sPvP just cant match (I also got tired of cap points after two weeks of playing).
If sPvP had the game types available in GW1 it would compete with WvW’s draw.
