3rd times the charm
Think of it this way once the ranger targets the pet on you they will automatically stay with you for the duration of their life regardless of where the ranger is because while they are under ranger control they are still a separate entity.
Our pets have a range. I cannot sit on a side point on Kyhlo and have a pet attack the treb. Nor, can we send the pet to attack the gate on foefire from the node. Nor can we send the pet to attack the monster on Forest. We used to be able to. On the contrary I can have my pet chase you halfway across the map, however, I cannot control it because (as the game says) your pet is too far away. Which is super annoying.
I think you should just learn to deal with it. No one has this problem in tourneys. Just kill the pet. Or kite it.
Am I good?… I’m good.
seriously, pets are fine. if a ranger is putting his pet on you, he is operating at half strength wherever he is.
just get a ranger buddy to sic his pet on you & practice kiting it, it’s really not hard to neutralize 90% of the dmg.
if you are going to bring a thief into the equation, then you need to have a thief on your side as well, otherwise what are you talking about? these 2v1 scenarios in a vacuum don’t exist.
in this case, the thief on your side either pressures the ranger, gibs the pet, gibs the thief, etc. it’s a team game, even in hotjoins. even without voice coms, you can see where your teammates are on the minimap, & they will ( usually ) help you if you fight near them.
if a pet is on you & you can’t break the leash range, just get a teammate to go pressure the ranger. he will pull the pet back immediately, just like popping a mesmer portal.

This is a good example. The thief will usually one-shot the ranger in this scenario. But go ahead OP and call for nerfs for these OP pets that rarely hit anyone that moves.
Accept the “Balance” as it is. It could be worse. I pretty like the actual class-situation (except ele, who will be nerfed soon). By the way: a-net can see all the threads and some they read. But in this forum where 50% is just no-sens about QQ and fixing classes because they’re OP, there’s a little chance they will. Time to bring a thread that will bring this game forward.
This would have been a good thread if it only covered the distance from which a pet can chase from it’s master. Looks like it’s already been ruined by nerd rage though.
Before I go off on how problematic this can become, does anyone know how far the pet can actually go before it ports back to the ranger? (serious question)
My main issue is that this allows the ranger to lock someone into combat for a VERY long time, especially when Troll Ungent comes into play. I’ve not yet gone up against someone that was smart enough to abuse this, but I’m sure people will pick up on it soon enough.
That and keeping people from grabbing buffs on Temple. :P
The only thing I would like is for pet aggro to reset if you’re downed.
I have no problem being downed and a ranger deliberately putting their pet on me to stop me from getting back up, that’s smart play. What I cannot stand is some idiotic ranger who has no idea I’m downed attacking someone else whilst their pet stops me from bandaging.
Same with any pets actually, Mesmer clones, Necro Minions, Elly summons. I honestly don’t think they should continue to attack a downed player if the main player isn’t smart enough to know you’re downed or even where you’re downed.

the ele pets have a short range and follow the owner so if the ele is too far away it stops attacking and follows the summoner. mesmer clones since they dont follow the mesmer put will run at max range then blow up, and ranger pets are different they perma follow you and will attack random people. i do not believe there is a range on pets or the ranger/pet skills

to my knowldge there doesnt seem to be a useful range when it comes to spvp sicne you can be at keep and have ur pet attacking someone at the mine and still be able to cast pet skills on it. imo if ur pet goes out of X range you should lose control of it and not be able to heal/use skills for it or it should auto return.
i ran from keep after we took it to the mine and ran into a lizard pet just as i got to the mine steps when as soon as it saw me began to attack me, as i almost killed it i saw the rnager popped his troll urgent on the pet/himself and it healed right back up. just before it was about to die it vanished. this is a problem a ranger shouldnt have control of its pet when its that far away from him and then be able to just make it vanish away so it doesnt die nd go on CD. its basically a free dmg to a player with no downside to the ranger. since all u have to do is hit the “passive” skill button on the bet UI and it teleports right back to u and begins to regen its hp.
