1) Don’t display player names.
This would cause players to avoid matches against good players with the system suggested below.
2) Prevent games from starting as anything but 5v5/limit.
This is a rather obvious point that should be stressed in any game trying to be competitive.
3) Prevent players under glory rank 20 from queueing for tpvp.
While rank does not directly translate to skill, player experience tend to do. Someone who’s never played the game should not be alowed to influence your matches. The tPvP queue is the first thing you see on the PvP tab. I’d like to stress this point.
4) Normalize player models to humans. (edit: someone suggested a client-side option to do this, the same way WvW models are normalized)
Asuran are annoying.

or just play kegbrawl
agreed man… its so bad now.
Team of default female asuran mesmers named “IIIIIIII” and “IIIIIIIII” anyone?
1) Don’t display player names.
Better solution – default names. Mesmer, Mesmer (1), Necromancer, Guardian, etc.
and disable mapchat + whisper
Team of default female asuran mesmers named “IIIIIIII” and “IIIIIIIII” anyone?
have you ever seen that but with norns? if not, pray that you won’t.

maybe if we bump this to 1k replies they’ll have to read it

2) Prevent games from starting as anything but 5v5/limit.
For me, this would be such a remarkable quality improvement and would have prevented quite a lot of rage for me in the last week.
This is beyond me without words. How does PvP in some game go from being “the next esport” to such a piece of garbage?
The fact that tournament games were ever allowed to begin 4v5 and made it to the public like this is a demonstration of anet’s complete lack of care and complete incompetence.
We’re now 18 months into it and this is still the case.
You are objectively bad at your job. This is costing you money and potential players. This is frustrating people. And yet you do absolutely nothing to address the problem. You don’t even talk to us. Any clerk in a store acting like this would’ve been fired. So why are you not? The fact that you’re hidden behind a screen doesn’t make you impervious to criticism. Devs like this are the problem in this stale gaming industry. And there are no ways of reaching out because you overmoderate anything that would be seen as a stain. And there are no ways of reaching your superiors.
Arekitten.net.
3) Prevent players under glory rank 20 from queueing for tpvp.
whats wrong with players under rank 20? dont think rank = skill or whatever, and no im not saying my team is pro GG whatever, just am sick of all the kitten at ranks.
oh yeah, I learned to pvp in wvw ^^, just as my team(gvg!), but yeah that doesnt reflect in ranks:)

Yeah 1 case in a million cases.
Lets be real the op is right, there should be some restriction about who plays in tourny , this current system is a joke…
^^Agree with this guy. Rank does not directly translate to skill.
Rank reflects experience.
There is a correlation between experience and skill.
Players with lots of experience are more likely to be good than players with little to no experience.

Actually, they do talk to us. And TBH many of them seem as frustrated as we are.
This suggests that it’s not that they don’t care, but that they aren’t being given the resources necessary to fix the problems.
I do think it’s VERY disappointing that rather than fixing core problems like 4v5, they put gold in matches, attracting tons of new players who are more likely to create 4v5s.
Just completed a match.
Our team ranks: 10 – 36 – 18 – 20 – 14
Their team ranks: 61 – 49 – 54 – 64 – 41
A dartboard would do better.
In my experience, most MMO’s make a lot of poor decisions regarding their PvP design, then follow it up with more poor decisions. They provide a lot of ‘fixes’ which don’t necessarily address the core problem.
ArenaNet makes very few poor decisions, but their problem is that you’re more likely to see a new ring on a tree before you see the fixes implemented in game.

3) Prevent players under glory rank 20 from queueing for tpvp.
4) Normalize player models to humans.
1. I believe this to be an incredibly good idea
2. I think they are working on this and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a ready check in the first month of the new year
3. There are a ton of smurf accounts around that are below rank 20. Enforcing something like that could be detrimental
4. I am indifferent to this one. I couldn’t care less what my character looks like in terms of aesthetics, but I do believe human to be overall the race with the best and most natural animations.
So if everybody has got to be a human, so be it. Any other race, I would strongly oppose.

There could be room for options, but I agree with you:
1) There’s an option to turn this off in the settings.
2) As I suggested b4 I think a 4v4 would be ok, don’t start if not 4v4 else if 4v5, reward a player to volunteers to drop. i.e 15 silver. No volunteer, randomly drop one and award anways.
3) I think Anet could offer a Tier Queue, says rank 10-20, 20-30, 30+, etc. You can only queue in those tiers depending on your rank.
4) This should be a user setting.
Good post.

To respond to 3)
Smurf accounts ruin the balance for lower level players. If you’ve ever played league of legends as a newcommer, you’d know. The game is supposed to be fair at low and high levels of play, and smurfs if anything are to turn off new players. They typically generate more trash talk as well on top of skewing matches. So no, I’m not backing off this statement.
For new players to improve, they need to be taken step by step; you don’t improve at chess by getting wrecked by a 2.2k master over and over and over. You do, however, by playing against increasingly better players so that you may slowly add to your base of knowledge.
I like seeing player names so that I have the joy of knowing the name of what noob I’m stomping.

Yeap and I got experience from wvw, but thats not added to rank.
Right now my solo q is against enemies all rank 40+ while im just rolling arround rank 19.. ‘’but yeah thats solo Q so its quite kittened anyway.’’
Well if you dont want to be fighting with a low rank, make your own team. don’t expell them because you have been in a team with a low rank who failed, I’ve seen high ranks do the same or even worse… leaving/ragequiting.
all ranks should be allowed to do tpvp. there’s a way for you not to play with a low rank so rule 3 is a kittened rule imho.

Well, that might be a premade vs a pug. It often happens to me when I join Team queue. My team has an average rank of 30-35, the enemy has a rank of 15-20, but they are a 5-man team, we are not.
I mostly win these fights, but they are not so easily won.
It’s true though, rank doesn’t necessarily means you suck. A WvW veteran will surely fight well.
The problem is that Conquest is a pretty delicate matter, as there never are obvious choices and many decisions are gambles based on enemy respawn/information you can gather from the UI. When you play alone, it’s much worse.
Big, big agreement with all except for:
) Prevent players under glory rank 20 from queueing for tpvp.
No, a much better solution is to match low ranked/new/learning players with… other new players, instead of just shunning them completely.
Lol anet. Still plagued by same issues, no response, no communication.
No gems, how’s that working out for you?
Team of default female asuran mesmers named “IIIIIIII” and “IIIIIIIII” anyone?
My team and i got bored one night and ran 5 giant pink norn mesmers all named things like “IOIOIIIIO”. It confused us at least as much as our opponents.
Two worthless suggessions.
1) Make the game even less social than it is. (How do players become friends?). People derive pride from winning or even losing to good players.
2) My EU alt is r10 and is at the mmr of r40-r50 players. Explain to me again how rank = skill.
The other two are decent.

Response to 1)
Show the names after the match.
Response to 2)
Correlation =/= causation. A rank 20 player is more likely to have more experience than a r1 player. The idea is to simply not have players that have never played the game hit the queue up with veterans. This is bad for both parties; the newer players stand no chance, and may be turned off the game, and the veterans lose and become cynical and may also quit playing.
As a example of such a system, League of Legends doesn’t let you queue ranked until you reach level 30, that’s so you get acquainted with basic game mechanics. Level 30 doesn’t mean you’re good or better or worse than anyone; it only means that you’ve experienced some of the game’s mechanics. Same idea.

If I find a lowbie, I don’t know.
If I find a guy with high rank, It’s more likely he know what he’s doing.

Exactly. It’s all about probabilities. Some high ranks are bad, but I can almost assure you that more low ranks are bad.
I would like to add my thoughts to this.
1. Split pve and pvp balance. There are simply too many skills and traits that are overpowered in one aspect of the game, and never used in another. This simple change alone could unlock hundreds of new builds without having to worry about how much more of a wrecking ball a build would be in pve if some traits were adjusted
2. Remove Skyhammer. Lets face it, the only people who like this map are the people who have farmed rank 50 on it. It was a good idea in theory, but in practice, that map just sucks. Rewarding CC spam is the last thing this meta needs.
3. Tournament reward chests need something new. New skins, more dyes, a drop of liquid glory. something. If i have to salvage another ascalonian greatsword or golden rifle i’m gonna have to have wrist surgery.
4. Remove the cash rewards for losing a game. Afk’ing should NEVER be rewarded. On this note you could even up the reward for winning so it would make actually trying to win more valuable than farming glory and silver.
5. Increase rewards for solo que wins. At this point in the game playing solo que is pointless, because joining team queue as a single games pop just as fast, and chances of winning are the same. sure you might get rolled by a premade, but how is that different than soloq ing into a 4v5 where 2 of ur teammates leave. Solo que needs to stay, there just needs to be an incentive to play it.
I say no to removing player names from tpvp. When we pvp we are making a name for ourselves, we want the enemy to know who we are: “oh that guy plays a great X, I’m gonna watch out for him”.
Taking that away is taking some of the joy of pvp away. Unlike you, some people, myself included, when we see there’s a famous player on the enemy team that motivates us to strive to play better and make a good impression on them.

How about not displaying them until the game has started?
I’ll repeat that a simple solution for low mmr low rank would be to start players at a different mmr on their first match based upon their rank.
Say:
R1-9 750 mmr
R10-19 1000 mmr
R20-29 1250 mmr
R30+ 1500 mmr
This way skilled players who have low rank can still play.
If all queue was counted/ranked it’d be k, I guess. Though every new rank brackets, your wins could be reset or something.
